Reema Sen is definitely Tamil Cinema's first dignified lead actress.
Tamil Cinema needs more actresses like her.Unlike other actresses who act coy in every word they speak and every movement of their body, Reema Sen is an actress who plays her roles with dignity.
Other actresses like Simran, Jyothika, Aishwariya Rai degrade themselves on screen by playing bimbos.
(Remember 'Valli' which made Simran famous. That movie is a classic example. I'm not talking about the revealing scenes. I have no problem with people showing off their bodies. I'm refering to the s**ual politics in the movie. Simran's introductory scene was a 5-second focus on her a**. And every single scene with her thereon was a show of her as a dumb s**-object. Right from the scenes where she believes Ajit's stories to the scene when she finds out and then excuses him while exposing her rain-drenched-boobs to the scenes playing the subservient saree-clad wife in the brothers' household. Remember this is just an example i've chosen. Almost every tamil movie has a similar undertone.)
(And Jyothika seems to be mentally challenged in all her movies. When I saw the Kushi promos, I thought she was playing a mentally-retarded girl.no kidding.)
(And Aishwariya Rai. She is the ultimate example. Not only does she play dumb, she also looks constipated at the same time. She delivers her lines with facial contortions like she has a bee in her a**hole.)
Even the so called "homely" actresses like Devayani, Suvalakshmi, Kausalya play the bimbo-sexobject game in every single movie they act in. They claim to play decent roles.But they are even worse than the so called "indecent" actresses. They do it by coquettish looks in their eyes and stupid looks (which seem to say "See, I'm just an incapable dumbass pushover") on their faces. And the roles they play affirm that being a decent woman means being a "traditional" second-class citizen of society.
I'm not kidding. Reema Sen is the first REAL lead actress in a movie. Everyone else falls in the other category -- the category which serves to undermine the role of women.
I guess people might say that her character in "Minnale" was sketched that way and the script was the main reason for the strong and sensible character she potrayed. But that is not true. An actress like Simran would've played that character in a completely different way.
Besides, I've seen Reema Sen in a couple of other movies (HHGAK and Chitiram). She never plays a degrading role. ( By the way, isn't she SO F***ING BEAUTIFUL???!!!! :-) )
Like I said, Reema Sen is the first actress who lends her role dignity. I really hope she isn't the last.

P.S:
I know fans of the actresses mentioned in this post are probably getting ready to flame me. Don't. The actresses menioned here are just examples I used because they are popular. And I used them to make my point. Every (and i mean EVERY) actress in Kollywood falls under this category.

  FLASHBACK:
  There seems to be some confusion here. I think that I haven't made myself clear.
  Certain points I need to clear up:
  
  1. Maybe the problem was that I tried to make two points at the same time.
  a: The degrading roles which women get to play in Indian movies.(which Reema Sen dosen't accept.)
  b: The actresses who act in a way which serve to establish women as idiots. (which she dosen't do)
  
  2. I don't consider Reema Sen to be a GOOD actress. I consider her to be an actress who does her job and only her job -- ACTING. (She does not try titillating the audience where the role does not call for it.)
  a: She has never chosen a role where she has nothing to do but look galmarous. Every role (Minnale, HHGAK, Chithiram, Hallo Mama, Manasista Nuvve) was pivotal to the movie. And her role is a major one in coming-soon 'Jaal'. This is unlike other actresses who do roles which have been added to the script just because Indian movies need an heroine.
  ( Most movies are like this. For example, among the 4 movies released for tamil new year this year, Priyanka Chopra is irrevelant to the story in 'Tamizhan', the heroine in 'Gemini' is obviously an addition to the script of an otherwise gang-war story, Action-movie Rajiyam I'm sure dosen't need an heroine,but of course it has one. I'm not sure about 'Tamizh'.I have no idea about the movie. :-( )
  b: She does her roles without looking like someone who has a an IQ of 70. In fact in her telugu movies, the heroes look dumb compared to her.
  
  3. Sure Vaseegra was a se*y song. We all know THAT. And Reema Sen was s*xy in it. The point is : The clothes she wore and the moves she made didn't serve to package her as a "s*x object". They served to potray her as a "s*xy woman".And Unmai.Striptease pole? Maybe. Striptease? Definitely not. Besides, I have more respect for strippers than I do for actresses in Tamil movies. Honestly.
  
  4.And Janani and SS,there is nothing wrong in playing a sleazy character( like she did in 'Hallo Mama'). The problem is when actresses play normal characters in a sleazy manner. I've seen her telugu movie 'Chithiram'. I definitely didn't find it sleazy. How else would you have expected them to shoot a scene depicting intercourse? And her character was really strong in the movie. Much stronger than the leading male character.
  
  THE MAIN POINT I'M TRYING TO MAKE:
  I'm surprised that some people can't see the difference between Reema Sen and other actresses. All the other actresses act in every movie like they're just downright STUPID. I guess people are so used to seeing actresses that way that we've gone used to it. This is something that has existed from the days of Saroja Devi,Jayalalitha,K.R.Vijaya. (Think of the way they deliver their lines facing the camera with a look of utter stupidity on their faces Marilyn-Monroe-style and the way that whenever they make a strong point their body makes a suggestive gesture). It has lessened a bit over the years. But the problem still exists. Every existing heroine still continues the tradition. To really understand what I'm saying, maybe you need to watch an expert at play. Check out any movie of Nagma's. And try to observe the way she acts.
  
  
  WHAT I MEAN BY SEXUAL POLITICS:
  When I talk about s*xual politics, I'm not necessarily talking about scenes of a s*xual nature (Although most scenes with s*xual content in tamil movies involve s*xual politics). I'm talking about scenes which insult women and serve to degrade them. Such scenes exist in almost every movie.
  It really dosen't matter to me if an actress does p*rn. Why should such an actress feel ashamed of acting in a tastefully done p*rn movie? It isn't in any way degrading for her. (Of course, doing p*rn would trivialise something beautiful and make one's married-love-s*x life meaningless. But that's her own private problem. A p*rn movie dosen't make a statement about women in general. We all know women have s*x :-) )
  It is scenes like Rambha's intro in VIP ("Women are t*ts-a*s and nothing else"), Aishwariya in Ullae-Veliya ("Police-women are bimbos") which are a problem. And all the movies where the heroines are highlighted by their physical assets.
  And then there are the tame-the-b*tch movies like Pista ("Wives should be physically abused as needed"), Mannan("Wives shouldn't have corporate power. They should be at home cooking for their husbands.").
  (Rajinikant's movies are always chauvinistic, but 'Mannan' was his worst.)
  
  
  PS:
  Well, Unmai, I really can't argue for her beauty. I guess it's a matter of personal preference. I guess I find her beautiful because of the decent way she acts. And her twinkling eyes. And her lovely body.
  She's just so GRACEFUL!!

  play, if u think reema is decent and doesn't accept degrading roles,look at chitram.i know ur probably thinking" i've been through all that",but still,if she was so decent then why would she accept such a role? i agree with you about the part of some actresses who sell themselves short, by acting as slaves for their husbands( deveyani,sneha,soundarya)but still reema does not proove that she is different. simran used to do very independant roles,but now like in elumalai,she's falling. jothika and laila seem the only ones who still give the image of being strong.you try to interprete every single one of reema's moves as wonderful,but (i think you realise this too)you're trying to make a wrong into a right.to me reema does not give the impression of being a good actress or being decent.she has no bubbliness about her that makes me want to watch the film.she's boring.

  you know play, whether you're right about the reema sen thing or not (I personally disagree strongly with you on that one), I DEFINATELY agree about your analysis of the other actresses. Simran is just so annoying, I dunno why she's so popular- she might as well go the mumtaaj way and just prove she's in the film industry to bang on the heroes. I just watched vaali a few days ago for the second time, and you're right about that. Nowadays she pretends like she's the perfectly mature actress by wearing these fake-a$$ glasses that just makes you wanna go, "geez gimme a break, you KNOW you're not as cool as harry potter!!!". Jyothika IS in fact mentally retarded. Her face distorts into various and incomprehendable angles when she tries to act (sick!) If Aishwariya rai wasn't miss world and pretty, she would be practically worthless. Think about it. She needs to take some SERIOUS DOSAGES OF METAMUCIL AND EAT SOME PRUNES!! She is heavily constipated, and she gets more awards for that. People are just falling for her beauty and mistaking it for acting. The others are just too worthless to mention. Sneha's ok, but she has a certain golti look to her. There's this new one called Gayathri Jayaraman or something, and she's miss chennai, oh my god, let me tell you. She is so ugly, I have no idea where to start. If a dog went in place to the miss chennai competition, it would win hands down! Her neck is so fat and long, it's like the loch ness monster! And her body is like one big log without a shape. Let's see who else. All these heroines who are bollywood rejects and fashion models are so not as pretty as they are portrayed.
