DH! Interview: A.R. Rahman Dishes About the Oscars and More!
Leaving the world abuzz after his performance at the 2012 Oscar Awards, music composer AR Rahman’s global respect and fame remains stronger than ever, 3 years after he received an Oscar for Best score in the film Slumdog Millionaire.
AR’s life takes him from the east to the west creating masterpieces. His recognition, and work in Hollywood made him purchase a second home there. And while he sat in his beautiful LA house, AR Rahman filled us in on his hectic yet rewarding life!
DH!: This is the third time you are performing at the Oscars, tell me a bit about what drew you to the event this year?
AR: Composer Hans Zimmer asked me whether I would like to be a part of the band, he said he intended this to be an international band , and I did like the idea and I am a fan of Hans Zimmers’ works, so I said yes, and it was a good, and an exciting process.
A R Rahman , Hans Zimmer , Pharrell Williams , Ann Marie and Sheila E
DH!: Tell me about your Oscar performance?
AR: He gave his theme as a platform to work with for all of us, I called my version, "Oscar Sangamam", which means meeting or the mixing of cultures in Tamil .
DH!: What are you working on now?
AR: I am working on the Dreamworks film, Monkeys of Mumbai with Stephen Schwartz who is in India now to do some research, unfortunately I won’t be there while he is. I am doing a Mani Ratnam project, a Yashraj production as well as a film with Rajinikanth.
DH!: What kind of Mumbai inspired beats are we going to hear on the Mumbai Monkeys tracks?
AR: Can’t talk about it, but it’s exciting and it will be a good challenge, it incorporates the culture of India, going beyond the vibe of "Bombay dreams "the broadway and west end musical, which i scored.
DH!: You work quite often in the West and you see many of your colleagues here visiting India, what do you hope they do or see there?
AR: The New India is very exciting, the power of individuals is growing, and I hope that all of them have this influence on improving the not so good things, helping people who are not privileged to get education and leading them to upliftment, you see India is a country with the world’s richest man there and the poorest man co existing . India also has the most youngest people in the world so it’s an important place to set positive trends.
DH!: You have homes all over the world, what is something you have with you in each house?
AR: not all over (smiles ) A studio in all of these is a must to keep me going .
DH!: What’s next?
AR: I don’t know, I am going with the flow, sometimes with flow sometimes a u-turn, going back to doing Tamil movies, all the Tamil following has been depressed since I have been away so I’m going back, and doing a Mani Ratnam film.
DH!: Great to hear all the projects in the east and the west that you are doing. Your last major project in the west was Superheavy, was it amazing collaborating with so many big names?
AR: Absolutely, chance of a life time.
DH!: Message to your fans?
AR: Thanks for all the love, patience and support, there wouldn’t be anything without you guys.
