Dal Makani (Kugan)

Its a very tasty and nutritious dish.
DAL MAKANI
Ingredients:
150 grms whole urad dal
50 grms rajma
50 grms channa dal
2 large tomatoes finely chopped
2 onions finely chopped
2 green chillies, slit into 4 and cut across
1 tsp ginger paste
1 tsp garlic paste
˝ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp chillie powder
˝ tsp mango powder or lime juice
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbs kasuri methi
2 tbs butter
˝ cup cream
2 tbs coriander leaves cut
Salt to taste
Method:
Clean and soak the 3 dals over night.
Next day add the soaked dals, salt, turmeric powder,
in 3 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
Strain the water and keep aside.
The cooked dal should be soft.
Lightly mash the cooked dal and keep aside.
Heat a wok with 1 tbs of butter. Add in the cumin seeds.
When they splutter, add the green chillies, kasuri methi,
ginger garlic paste and sauté for a second.
Now add the chopped onions and sauté till they turn lightly brown.
Add the chopped tomatoes and cook till mushy.
Now add in the chillie powder, coriander powder and garam masala.
Sauté well for a minute.
Now add in the cooked dal, 2 cups of the drained water.
Add more if needed.
Add also the mango powder and the 1 tbs of butter.
Mix well and cook on low fire till the gravy thickens.
Lastly add in the cream and cook for a second.
Remove and garnish with the cut coriander leaves.
Serve hot with rice or roti.

K, the traditional version of dal makhni is very rich coz of the cream... You can find a low fat version of dal makhni on Tarla Dalal which is equally tasty... Here is the link to the recipe for those interested...

Dev, that is Pure and Naturals. Yes. I also have ninaivalaigal when I cross that place. B'day was another day. Nothing special. Being Purattasi Saturday, went to temple. Thats all.
