ராஜராஜ சோழன் படம் மிகப் பெரிய அளவில் மக்கள் வரவேற்பைப் பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டிய படம். Moderate Success என்பதை நான் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறேன். பெறவேண்டிய வெற்றியைப் பெறாததன் காரணமாக அந்தக் காலத்தில் ஒவ்வொரு சிவாஜி ரசிகனின் மனமும் புண்பட்டது உண்மை. ஏன் பெறவில்லை என்பதைத் தான் நான் எழுதியிருக்கிறேனே தவிர யார் மனதையும் புண்படுத்தும் நோக்கமல்ல.

புதிர் என்பது நமக்கு மட்டுமின்றி இது வரை நடிகர் திலகத்தின் படங்களைப் பற்றி அறியாதவர்களுக்கு புதிய தகவல்களைத் தரும் ஒர் வழிமுறையாகவும் உதவுகிறது. விடையளிக்க விரும்புவோர்கள் இருக்கும் வரை இது தொடரும்.

Raja Raja Chozhan is not a failure movie. It is a hit movie comparing with its stuff.

Three songs were good, but the duet for Muthuraman & Laxmi and Sivakumar & Kumari Padmini ('maadhennai padaiththan') is a below average one, and the song for Laxmi's dance 'naadhanaik kandenadi' also not good at level.

APN done a mistake by appointing Kunnakkudi as music director instead of KVM, for this great movie. Kunnakkudi is not a bad one and he already did for APN's movies as Agaththiyar, Thirumalai Thenkumari etc with good songs. But his after movies like Thirumalai Theivam and Karaikal Ammaiyaar, music is not that much good.

Sivakumar did not suit for Rajendra Cholan, and his pair Kumari Padmini is also not a good choice.

Big blunder is C.I.D.Sakunthala, who did an item dance in a historical movie. (same Sakunthala was made to dance a good bharatha natyam in Agathiyar for the song 'thalaivaa thavaputhalva').

But in Box Office Rajaraja Chozhan gone well, comparing to other NT & APN allianced Thiruvarutchelvar and Thirumal Perumai. Producer G.Umapathy sold the movie for a big amount and gained a good profit.

As said in previous post 1972 was a memorable year for NT &his fans as all his films barring Dharmam Engey were either hit or super duper hit though the trend of

continous success started from Babu of 1971 Deepavali, technically it fell in 1971).

So techinally Raja was the first hit in the glorious series of success

It is a as usual approach of Mr K. Balaji to move around and get the remake rights officially and then to do a movie. My parents would say that people would say Republic day as Balaji’s movie release date as Balaji’s movie would release on same day without a miss mostly every year also Balaji’s daughter would usually give first tickets in particular theatre(Forgot the name)

RAJA was produced by Balaji's 'Sujatha Cine Arts' and it was released on 26th January 1972. It was the re-make of Hindi film Johny Mera Naam starred by Dev Anand and Hema malini. The original movie was itself was a hit whereas our movie was a super duper hit.
It was also a movie made NT the tag of BO Emperor once again. As compared with his previous movie Raja was a light hearted, CBI kind of action flick with less emphasis on sentiment. Variety is the forte of NT as he establishes the fact once again particularly in the year 1972.

The crew of Raja comprised of music director: MSV, Lyrics by Kannadasan, DOP: MAstan & Tara, Fights by Madhavan , Direction by CVR.

CV Rajendran was an assistant to Sridhar and he too earned accolades for giving a super hit movie , thereby becoming a constant in K Balaji , NT combo
The trio set the box office on fire for quite some years by spurning some money spinners thereby making fans happy.

The movie takes us to a different world probably underworld right from the word go through a different BGM that builds the tempo. I have recorded the BGM separately from the movie using a software such was the impact of BGM. The titles itself displays the name of people involved in crew in back goround of illusion images symbolically stating that NT as a smuggler as an illusion


I think this may be the first film of NT having more number of Villains, as Balaji, Manohar, Renga Rao, K.Kannan and 'Wrestler' Randhava. Everybody have done their portions very well.
Raja is all about Sekhar (Shivaji) and Chandar (Balaji) are brothers and in their school age their father was killed by villains Renga Rao and 'Kavarchi Villain' K.Kannan, by appointing a killer. Both sons witnessed for their father's death. Elder son (Master Vadhiraj) takes the sword from his dad's back, and kills the man who killed his dad. After that he was hiding in a car's dicky. Actually Renagarao (Nagalingam) and K.Kannan (Jambu) are travelling in that car. They found the boy in the car-back. The camera brings close up to the boy and freezes the face and suddenly the face of Balaji appears. Yes, he became one of the gangsters of Rengarao. Madras Police Commisioner Prasath (Major Sunderrajan) tells his sobordinates to watch Manohar, another gangster of Renga Rao, who is coming from Singapore with smuggled diamonds. They followed him up to Hotel Asoka, were he stays. When he was playing tennis, police searched the whole room but nothing available there. On hearing this matter Major arranges some other ways to arrest him. He enquired Manohar by showing a photo, with whom Manohar was shaking hands. Major arrest him and put in lock-up.

THERE COMES NT'S INTRODUCTION. He is pretending as the one who was arrested by Police. He makes friendship with Manohar (Viswam) and Manohar give NT (Raja) a job to steal a Tennis Racket from Asoka Hotel rennis club, and give it to the one to whom he has to call by phone. When he gone to the hotel room, he meets the cute Radha (Jayalalitha). She is also in the same gang of Babu (Balaji). The conversation between Shivaji and Jayalalitha will be very interesting in that scene. She gives five thousand rupees for his job and tells if he come with her to Cochin with the smuggled diamond she will give ten thousand. Raja is much happy that the routes are coming very clear to meet the gang boss.

Rest of the movie is how come NT elimates the gang and triumphs




Regarding NT's action, Though a detective story NT gives us a treat with his subtle reactions & stylish actions. The best one which everyone knew and wish to say is, his laughing when manohar beates pandaribai to get the truth that 'raja' is her son, Another scene his angry,when Major told him Nagalingam, which is in the photo, is the one who killed their father.

Also NT first scene in jail where he says about the police is too stylish, his first meeting with JJ where he says his name as Raja in different styles along with BGM of MSV is too good.

The fight seqeuences are also brilliantly executed be it that body builder fight, Fight with Kannan fights were long but enjoyable, a different feeling compared to NT previous movies.

The costumes of NT were stylish thanks to his lean muscle look don’t know how NT appeared lean compared to his previous movies, his costumes were mostly jerkins, coats, in light colour stylish pants, a kerchief like thing around his neck. I guess movies like Billa adopt same technique of coats & suits , attend which was made popular through this movie.

Similarly JJ’s dress might have been a rage among young girls those days the same trend is back again now especially the overcoat of JJ along with his salwar and JJ’s sarees is now prevelant in the form of printed silk also his cooling glass a black one with white spots in frame is top notch
All actors costumes were either coat suit or Pyjama kurtha which suited well

When we are talking about the actors of "RAJA", we should not forget to mention about the great comedianm Chandrababu. He acted in three roles as Constable Pattabiram, Air-hostess Janakiram and Bar-man Seetharam. He rendered his acting very nicely with different style. The one Janakiram, who stands in the entrance of Cochin Airport and say 'hello' to passengers. wow, last phase of this thespian

The movie has bond matters like camera cigarette lighter, microphone which is new to tamil audience

Though the movie is fast paced , the movie has it share of slow paced scenes in the form of Nagaiah though it is essential part of the movie but quickly gains speed once again

After seeing Raja one will remember “ Nee vara vendum endru Ethirparten song and fans will sing
“ nee vetri peruvai endru ethirparten

So say 3 cheers to the great Raja
