    A brief historical study on the sporting event "Vidai Urthal" also known as "Eeru Thaluvuthal" (Jallikattu) of Tamil Nadu

    Under Construction

    During the period of third Thamil Sangam B.C.325-A.D.350) of Tamil Nadu, the Tamilians gave much priority to bravery and valour of young men among many other activities in their daily life. During the times of war not only the regular warriors were trained in the field of martial arts but also the men in normal life too were trained and made use of at the time of war. Among the martial arts of that period were Silambam, Varma Kalai, Malyutham, Kalaarippayattu etc were practised in the earlier "Tamil - Chola Nadu, Paandiya Nadu, Thondai Nadu and Kongu Nadu" (which are all encompassed in the present Tamil Nadu), and former "Tamil - Chera Nadu and Aayi Nadu" etc (which are all encompassed in the present Kerala).

    During this period the martial art "Vidai Urthal" too was considered as an art of great valour among young men, that is the taming of the 'young Kaalaikal' (young male bulls) which was considered as an act of bravery. This was subsequently also known as "Eeru Thaluvuthal". ('Vidai' and 'Eeru' in Tamil means the Bull). This was essentially a regional martial art peculier to Paandiya Nadu and practised in the Paandiyan capital city of Mathurai and it's outskirts.

    Even the "Young Girls elligible for Marriage" in Tamil Nadu of this period too considered it as a great pride, to marry Young Men of great valour and strength. This concept and practice was much prevalent among the Sangam period Tamils in Paandiya Nadu especially among the Aayer Kudi (Pastoral community).

    The first reference to this is found in the 'Third Thamil Sangam Tamil Poetic work' named "Kaliththokai" of the early Third Thamil Sangam period around B.C.325-125. It refers to the Aayar Kudimakkal who lived in the Paandiyan capital city the Mathurai (Madurai). The Poet Uruththiran - a Chola king describes in his ""Kaliththokai" the mind set of the 'Aayar Kudi - Kanni Penkal' (young girls) on the eligibility of their future husbands as follows:

    Kaliththokai - by Chola king Naluruththiran, Mullai Kali

    The other reference to this is found in the 'great Kerala (Chera Nadu) Tamil Poetic work' named "Silappathikaram" of the period around A.D.165-185. It refers to the Aayar Kudimakkal who lived in the outskirts of the Paandiyan capital city the Mathurai (Madurai). The Poet Ilango Adikal describes in his Silappathiram the mind set of the 'Aayar Kudi - Kanni Penkal' (young girls) on the eligibility of their future husbands as follows:

    ".......காரி கதனஞ்சான் பாய்ந்தானைக் காமுறு மிவ்
    வேரி மலர்க் கோதையாள்

    நெற்றிச் செகிலை யடர்த்தாற் குரியவிப்
    பொற்றொடி மாதராள் தோள்;

    மல்லல் மழவிடை யூர்ந்தாற் குரிய ளிம்
    முல்லையம் பூங்குழல் தான்;

    நுண்பொறி வெள்ளை யடர்த்தாற்கே யாகுமிப்
    பெண்கொடி மாதர்தன் தோள்;

    பொற்பொறி வெள்ளை யடர்த்தார்க்கே யாகுமிந்
    நற்கொடி மென்முலை தான்;

    வென்றி மழவிடை யூர்ந்தாற் குரியளிக்
    கொன்றையம் பூங்குழலாள்;

    தூநிற வெள்ளை அடர்த்தாற் குரியளிப்
    பூவைப் புது மலராள்;

    It also highlights that the Young Girls in the "Aayar Kudi" grew young Bulls in their farm yard for the purpose of the "Bull Taming Ceremony" at which they would select the winners who tames their respective Bulls - as their prospective husbands.

    ஆங்கு,
    தொழுவிடை ஏறு குறித்து வளர்த்தார்
    எழுவ ரிளங் கோதையார்
    ......"

    Silappathikarem - by Ilango Adigal, Mathurai Kaandam, Aaychchiyar Kuravai

    Note:
    'மழ-விடை' யூர்ந்தாற் = those who tamed the 'Young-Bull'
