Beginning of a long, successful innings Sivaji Ganesan in Parasakthi

Blast from the past: Parasakthi 1952 ~ Sivaji Ganesan (debut), Pandari Bai, S. V. Sahasranamam, S. S. Rajendran. Sriranjani Jr., K. P. Kamatchi
The film that ushered in that new era was Pm kiln, released hi 1952 - written for the screen by another fast-rising star Mu. Karunanidhi, writes Randor Guy for "Blast from the Past" in The Hindu.
1952... an eventful year for Tamil cinema, the beginning of a new period.
Its genesis is interesting and deserves to be told at some length.... 'Parasakthi' was a hit play written by Pavalar Balasundaram, a Tamil scholar with a strong atheistic stance. The play attracted attention all over Tamil Nadu. Around tins time, another play, titled 'En Thangai' (My Sister), written by Tiruchi-based T. S. Natarajan, was making waves hi the theatre circuit. A tale of a brother sacrificing his love for the sake of his sightless kid sister, the play moved audiences wherever it was staged. The actor who played the loving brother was a struggling stage actor named 'Sivaji' V. C. Ganesan.
Meanwhile, back at Central Studios, Coimbatore, 'Jupiter' Somu ever a talent scout came to know about the play 'En Thangai'. Noted writer-director A. S. A. Sami saw the play and liked it. But he had too many irons hi the fire and suggested that Sundar Rao Nadkarm, then working for Jupiter, could be asked to do the film. Nadkami felt it was not his cup of tea. He loved mythology and folklore.
    His charisma rules
but not modern-day melodrama. Sami also saw 'Parasakthi' at the request of his friend and film distributor P. A. Perumal of National Pictures, who had plans of producing it as a film. This play too had as its main pohit the love of a brother for his poor, widowed sister.
Sami suggested that both plays could be coalesced into one, rewritten and made into a movie. But that did not work, as the veiy idea was rejected by 'En Thangai' Natarajan (as he came to be known). He had, meanwhile, sold his play to a producer hailing from the family, which had produced Ambikapathi years ago!
Work began on En Thangai with Tiruchi Loganathan, then a popular playback artiste, playing the role of the sacrificing brother. After a few reels were canned under the direction of Telugu film director Ch. Narayanamurthy the makers felt that the hero's performance was poor. The footage was scrapped, and M. G. Ramachandian, not yet the superstar he was destined to be. replaced the singer.
    P. A. Perumal launched his production by buying up the film rights of 'Parasakthi'. AV. Meivappan backed him. And Mu. Karunanidhi was signed to write the script. A great and significant moment hi Tamil cinema history was bom. To play the hero, Perumal chose Sivaji Ganesan who. after years of struggle and starvation, faced a movie camera for the first time inAVM Studio. The first word of dialogue he spoke was "Success". What a significant and prophetic word it turned out to be for that newcomer!
However, it was not smooth sailing for him. The directors, Krishnan-Panju, worked hard with the new face and after a few thousands of feet were canned, AV. Meiyappan and Iris friends viewed the rough-cut footage and were sorely disappointed. They felt The hero, that new actor Sivaji Ganesan. was no good!
AVM suggested that the hero be replaced and K. R. Ramasami be brought on board. But Perumal was not convinced. He had great faith in Sivaji Ganesan and was in no mood to heed AYM's advice. Also he couldn't ignore AVM in toto. Therefore, work stopped for quite a while and the poor hero had no option but to undergo long stretches of intense mental agony and insecurity, until Perumal decided to go ahead with him, come what may. And the camera whirred again hi the AVM Studios...
There were scenes of a temple priest trying to seduce the helpless young widow and her brother beating him up. The dialogue in this sequence was full of irony, sarcasm and biting humour, with deft touches of atheistic propaganda. These were found hi liberal doses elsewhere too. Not surprisingly, Parasakthi ran into severe problems with the censors before the certificate was issued for public exhibition. Parasakthi opened with a bang and met with instant success. Sivaji Ganesan found himself like Lord Byron, famous the next morning. The powerful writing of Karunanidhi, the atheistic stance, the performance of the unknown newcomer all this and more took the world by stomi. For a while, there were wild rumours

Sivaji Ganesan in Parasakthi - This July 21st marks 10 years since the passing away of "Nadigar Thilagam" Sivaji Ganesan.
that the picture might be banned, and that chew larger crowds to cinema houses.
Indeed the picture was the hit of the year. Sivaji Ganesan achieved star status overnight. Mu. Karunanidhi scaled greater heights. Dialogue became king hi Tamil films. Tamil cinema was never the same again. A new khid of history, which would have far-reaching consequences, was beginning to be made.
Remembered for the dialogue and the stunning performance of the new hero.

Sivaji Ganesan's 'Thmrvarut-chelvar' was released a week ago and there's more hi store for his fans, writes Malathi Rangarajan, in The Hindu newspaper of Apr 22. Friday Review section:
Frankly, when Y Gee Mahendra hisisted I join a group of diehard admirers of Sivaji Ganesan at Shanthi Theatre, Cheimai. to watch A.P. Nagarajan's 1967 classic. 'Thimvaiiitchelvar.1 I wasn't quite prepared for the adoration that the actor still commands. His every nuance on screen was greeted with joy. But, it wasn't a packed hall! "The crowd is less today because Cheimai Super Khigs are on the cricket field now," said B.V. Murali, whose Archana Films lias released 'Tliiruvamtchelvar.' All the same, it was obvious that Ganesan's staying power has shown no signs of let-up, and probably never will!
"Even today a Sivaji film draws full house on Sundays, and during the week the strength averages 200. Generally, on weekdays a new film has only around 100 viewers for a show. But Sivaji is still veiy viable." contends Murali. He is planning re-runs of 'Gauravam,' 'Engal Tlianga Raja' and 'Mannavan Vandliaanadi.1 hi the weeks to come. "It's more than mere business for me. I'm a hardcore fan of the actor," he smiles.
Murali was once secretary of the Cental Madras Sivaji Rasikar Mandram. "His fans are spread out all over the world. M.L. Khan, the present secretary of the All India Sivaji Mandram, has been helping me out with the promotion of 'Hiiruvamtchelvar,'" he says. The film will soon be screened in theatres in other areas of the city.
Though publicity for the film was minimal, on Sunday last, ardent followers of Sivaji, from Kadalur, Timvaimamalai and Puducheny travelled all the way to

Cheimai, to watch their hero on the big screen. "The house was almost frill. They had engaged mini vans to ply them to Cheimai for the purpose."
Recalls Murali: "We would often go over to Ms house to meet him. He would tell us, ' Acthig is my job. But just following actors shouldn't be yours. You have a duty towards your parents. Don't fritter away tune, it's precious. I'll be veiy happy if you all come up hi life.' Great man!"
Sekkizhar is seated in the king's court. His literary work on the Nayanmars is to be inaugurated. Beads of sweat reveal his anxiety. "Reading out the manuscript to such an august gathering makes me tense," he confesses self-consciously. Sivaji in the role (among several others in the film) bowled over the audience with his underplayed portrayal in the sequence. "This is how you portray fear, this is what you call acthig," cheered Mahendra. The audience's applause seconded it.
"And note director A.P. Nagarajan's service to Tamil with

a spate of films. Sad that the doyen went unsung," he adds.
You are bound to find V. Raghavendar at all venues where events for Ganesan are organised. "My devotion to Sivaji is as deep as YGM's," he laughs.Sivaji is as deep as YGM's," he laughs.

This former employee of the University of Madras created a website for his favourite actor in 2007 — nadigarthilakam.com offers authentic info and updates about Ganesan's repertoire. "It attracts 20 to 30 hits a day, and 23,000 fans have visited the site so far.
"I had no knowledge of computers but when I saw sites carrying incorrect details about Sivaji, I decided to redress matters. Sheer love for him goaded me on to become a computer literate and set up a site, without a tutor to guide me," he says. Raghavendar designed the banner for 'Thiruvarutchelvar' that was placed at Shanthi tins week
    .
Not a day passes without a Ganesan film being telecast on one or the other of the satellite channels. With such a fare available at the click of a button, can theatre releases woo people? "A year ago, Ins 'Pudhiya Paravai' was released and went on to do brisk business. Watching Sivaji tuts on the big screen is a worthy experience. The response makes it clear that many feel so," says Murali. Has he watched all of Sivaji's films? "He's worked in 298 films totally. 'Pooparikka Vamgirom1 was the last. Most of us have watched nearly all of them, but we are still hunting for the five we missed out — 'Thembudu Kodukku' hi Telugu and 'Mudlial Thaedlii,' 'Thuli Visham,' 'Kangal' and Manidhanum Mimgamum' in Tamil. Among these 'Mudhal Thaedlii' with Anjali Devi had him playing a middle-aged father even at the beginning of his career," Murali goes on.
July 21 will signify the 10 years of void that the remarkable actor's death has created. Murali plans to bring 'Gauravam' back to the theatres then. "His fans will lap it up," he says.
They do it eveiy tune, don't they?
