    Ilaiyaraaja - The Singer

Ilaiyaraaja, the singer is rather much maligned and underrated in my opinion. The songs which he chooses to sing (or at least his versions which are officially released) would not be the same if sung by any other singer (with very rare exceptions). Balu Sir says Mohammed Rafi is the ultimate *playback* singer. I would pick Ilaiyaraaja right after Balu Sir when it comes to singing, playback or otherwise. His voice may not be the smoothest, it may not have certain conventional endearing and polished qualities but it is the rawness which gives such a unique experience to the listener. When Raaja sings a song, he is actually telling a story.
Lets discuss and share opinions on Ilaiyaraaja's singing (playback and otherwise).

I do find his singing being good many times. In some cases, I like his version better than the one used in the film. 'Ennai Taalata Varuvalo' is an example. The song of his which I like the most is the Telugu song, 'Kalaya Nijama' from Coolie No.1 . There is also a song from 'Poonjolai' (Gaana Kuyile?) in which his version is more emotive.

Among the composers, I feel IR is the best. His voice is so divine and can convey almost all emotions. There are lot of numbers...

    Like "Sangathil Paadaatha Kavithai"-Auto Raja
Naan Thedum Sevanthi Poovithu..(That Alaap in the beginning is sheer class)
The version Kaatril Varum Geethame are great examples

There is no doubt emotions sound at their authentic best when this minute sings. Was hearing eduthu naan vidavaa other day. The pitch perfect stammer, inconsistence of a drunkard - vera evnum paNNi irukka mudiyaadhu. The NT of playbck singing, I say

I love IR as a playback singer too. He has a unique voice which surprisingly take the shape of the emotion which he predominantly wants to exhibit (even without he strainign to create any diff)

    Like musicman quoted.

    naan thedum sevvanthi poovidhu
    janani janani

etc are examples to show how varied temperment songs are stiched to suit him too well.

    Plum,

Drunmurd song reminds me of 'Jakkamma' from 'Solla Marandha Kadahai'. Excellent imitation of a drunkard singing. The tune is great too.

IF someone says anything wrong about IR's singing, I just tell them one word - 'Thiruvasagam' - In my opinion the best playback singer in the industry - Balu sir also would not have sung it that well. Bhaava is the most important aspect when it comes to film singing and devotional singing more than ability to sing complex aalaaps and intricate bruhas. In this aspect he is right up there. I did not think much of his singing 'romantic' songs till i heard 'Thendral vandhu' and 'Saamak kozhi'. So he is a complete singer with great deal of knowledge - verenna vendum unakku?
Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.
