whoa! skr, for sharing this one, mikka nandri! Rajesh's playing is always very soulful. My only grouse in this one is the sound of his veenai. I think he's plugged it to a processor (seen in the video) and the sound it creates is a very electric guitar like one. The divinity of the veenai is somewhat missing. Anyway, he compromises for this with his lovely playing.
Never knew a ragam called Kosalam existed in the first place! Sundari kannaal's charanam has some unbelievably goosefleshy moments, the ones which Rajesh demonstrates here in this video. What a subtle variance in texture it creates in contrast to Kalyani's pleasant and warm feeling. This man's grasp and comprehension of music is simply beyond any other artist I've come across so far.
While googling for this ragam, came across this padhivu from Vel:
Kosalam was earlier used in film Thalapathi...the song is "sundari kannal oru seidhi"...Incidentally, the song blends the ragas "kosalam" & "kalyani" to give a blend of happy & pathos emotions (love & war scenes in that song..the orchestration in war sequences is in kosalam, the charanams mix both...pallavi reaches back to kalyani)..The genius in this song "sundari kannal oru seidhi" is that, the two ragas kosalam & kalyani, just differs in one swara, and IR has used this brilliantly to give two entirely different shades of emotions...The scale for the two songs are given here..
Kalyani - s r2 g3 m2 p d2 n3 s
Kosalam - s r3 g3 m2 p d2 n3 s...

One more song of Maestro where Kosalam is blended in a Kalyani based song is Vellai Pura Ondru from Pudhu Kavithai ..It happens in the 2nd interlude after the Flute-string portion but its not as profound as Sundari Kannal ..
