Basic Codes of Medical Practice & Food Consumption Practice as perThirukkural

Thurukkural is a treatise on the Code of Ethics - in Tamil composed almost 2043 years ago by the Tamil Sage/Poet Thiruvalluvar, and staged at the 3rd Thamil Sangam at Mathurai in Tamil Nadu, in the presense of the Paandiyan king around the year B.C.31. It has 133 - chapters speaking on various topics of life, with each chapter having 10 - Kurals (Kural= a two lined verse) on a particular topic. The chapter 95 in same is titled as "Medicine" and has some useful "basic codes" on Medical and Food Consumption Practices that prevailed 'at that time in Tamil Nadu'. The brief translation of these ten Tamil Kurals with words added for more clarity, are as appended below.

    (1) Practice of Medical Science - comprises of the Patient, the Doctor, Medicines that cures the illness, and the Nursing Aides.

    (2) The Doctor in his practice of the Medical Science - should diagonise the type of Patient’s illness, the root cause of his illness, and analyse the method of curing the illness.

    (3) The Doctor in his practice of the Medical Science - at the time of diagnosis give thought to the age of the Patient, the extent of his illness, and the period of illness.

    (4) The People who take much more or much less food than their normal intake, will be subject to three root causes of illness (the Vaatham, Piththam and Kapam) as indicated in the Medical Science.

    (5) The People who have their normal intake of food among them the happiness prevail, but among the glutinous prevail all the illness.

    (6) The People who have the normal intake of food increase the longevity of their life.

    (7) The People who take food after the complete digestion of the previous intake, will not require medicines for themselves.

    (8) The People should do away the food that are known to disagree with their body to prevent illness that cause damage to life.

    (9) The People overeating beyond actual measure of their hunger, the illness will dominate beyond measure.

    (10) The People who eat with restraint not beyond the routine food (at odd times) there is no harm to their life.
