Went to D Y Patil stadium to see A R Rahman's concert and he was simply magical. He sang all his top songs for almost 3 hrs.

    Rahman magic

The crowds snaked their ways through bad traffic, worse dug up roads just for one man. A.R.Rahman.

Lasers beamed into the still of the night. And the roars went up. The 20,000 crowd packed to the rafters at the DY Patil stadium began chanting for the man of the moment.

Keyboards tweaked, percussion instruments set in sync, Ranjit Barot was ready to lord it all again. Rahman's unobtrusive presence and chocolate tiramisu vocals wove it's magic as he took listeners into a trance.

Adding to the joy was supernova Sachin Tendulkar who complimented Rahman and borrowed a line from Delhi 6 and besides fulsome praise also said "rehna tu hai jaisa tu". Rahman returned the compliment saying, "This guy is the one reason I started watching the game."

It was really A.R.Rahman redux. Watching his spirited rejigging of Kaadhal Rojave, Chaiyyan Chhaiyyan, Hosanna. Good to see old favourite Suresh Peters who jammed in tamil with Chikku Bukku and Pettai rap.

The magic of Rahman pervaded all through the night as he took us through spirited renditions of Qun faya Qun, Khwaja mere khwaja.

The slight tinge of disappointment was Mohit Chauhan who kept missing the beats and was dare we say it, off key while singing Phir ud chala, Jo bhi main. He however regained composure when joined for a lusty rendition of Sadda Haq with the maestro himself.

26th May was yet another red letter day in the corridors of music. A diminutive composer made giant music strides and kept a colossal crowd in thrall.

Magic as they say comes in small packages.

Grand musical night of AR Rahman

He came, he performed, he conquered. AR Rahman showed Mumbai how to rock the night as he ramped up the amp and put up a spectacular musical pageant at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. The show, presented by The Times of India, had the crowd - a rough estimate pegged the headcount at 30,000 - chanting and swaying to the maestro's musical genius.

And if Rahman on stage wasn't enough, you had Sachin Tendulkar and wife Anjali sitting in the audience. There was a break midway through the show when Sachin was invited on stage. "AR Rahman has taken Indian music to a different level, has made it even bigger," said Sachin, as he was gifted a bouquet by Rahman.

"This is guy who made me start watching cricket," laughed the master from Chennai, as the crowd cheered the two icons.

And then there was the music - spectacular and soul-stirring. Rahman led the band of young musicians with his renditions of classics like Dil Se, Kun Faya Kun, Jai Ho and Rubaroo.

The gang of girls - Natalie Di Luccio, Harshdeep Kaur, Neeti Mohan and Shweta Pandit - belted out one hit after another. Mohit Chauhan and Javed Ali set the stage on fire with their sufi and rock numbers from Rockstar.

And it wasn't just Rahman's new hits. Towards the end of the show, Rahman even had his troupe perform some of his classics from south films, like Chikku Bukku Raile from Gentleman.

As the evening drew to a close, and Rahman started singing Vande Mataram to a standing crowd, one could make out that no one's quite like Rahman - so global, yet so Indian. Check out Music Star Homepages

I don't know what, if anything, ARR contributed to the composition, since it has the Niyaz sound. But I was wondering years ago when ARR and Azam Ali would collaborate on something. She is from Iran, but she spent her childhood in India, so perhaps her Hindi/Urdu is good enough to where she can sing in Hindi films. Her rendition of the Urdu song Allah Hi Allah is pretty good.

    Shankar's next!!

Samantha, who is busy with Gautham Menon’s Neethane En Ponvasantham with Jiiva, has been roped in for Shankar’s next big venture. The Endhiran director is all set to start his work for Therdhal, with Vikram in the lead. Apart from Samantha, the film might also have another heroine, probably from Bollywood.

Aascar Ravichandran will produce the film; PC Sriram will crank the camera and AR Rahman will compose the music.
