Listening to a tape containing many 'rain songs' composed by Raja. I think each song deserves a separate writeup. Probably should open a thread for the rain songs and discuss about the orchestration done by Raja in these songs. Will need to get my thoughts in order and post about these songs soon. Currently enjoying 'Megam Kottatum', 'Vaan Megam', 'Jallantha Kougintha' (Tamil Version), 'Oh Oh Megam Vandhadho', 'Vaanam Enna'. On repeat mode the last couple of days.

And while you are downloading 'sharadendhu' also check out 'virahamay vipalamay' from 'Man of the Match'. Another song in the 'sivamallipoove' mold.

Like I said earlier, 'shivamallippoovE' is equal to 'ninnukkOri' in my books
I don't understand the logic of not having this song when the movie was remade in Thamizh

Suresh, another terrific example of minimalist and effective synth usage is "Oru Chiri Kandaal" from Ponmudipuzhayorathu. That tune is really captivating and is the driving force of the song. If you listen closely to the interludes, there are traces of WCM in them...so superbly woven into the main fabric of the song.

Shank,
'Ponmudi...' was one album which I initially though was below par except for 'oru chiri kandal' but after a few listens, just fell in love with it. 'Oru Chiri Kandal' is Raja's favorite Mayamalavagowla. It is incredible how he can come up with so many tunes based on this ragam and yet sound so fresh. There was also another song in Guru Ramana Geetham, which has a Mayamalavagowla which closely resembles 'oru chiri kandal'. 'Oru Chiri Kandal' became an instant favorite of my wife. The other song from this movie, 'nadhaswaram ketto' has some amazing orchestration and is a rhythmic delight. Also see how unexpected the song flow is. 'ammayennu vaaku' is a very touching song. 'pandathe naatupuram' and 'vazhimaru vazhimaru' are very nice as well.

app_eng,
Somehow, after listening to the Malayalam 'Friends' I can't bring myself to listen to the Tamil 'Friends'. The only song I listen to is 'Poongatre'.
