My question is what it is that the 'follower's were consuming ? His lecture, aanmeega 'gyaan' or his personality ? Quite obviously people take his words seriously ONLY because he was a celibate saamiyAr.
As long as we place that as a 'premium' these things will keep happening.

P_R, the issue is that he projected himself as a celibate saamiyaar. You don't have to do that - witness Rajneesh, for example. But if you dishonestly pretend to be something you're not, it's the hypocrisy that breeds contempt.

When I lived in Bangalore in the early 1990s, there was a rather famous young sanyasi, I think he was the head of a matha, who'd released a number of cassettes with devotional chanting and music. He fell in love with the daughter of one of the members of his matha, and gave up sanyasa and his post to marry her. Something similar happened last year, again in Karnataka, when the head of a matha gave up sanyasa to marry a woman. Neither of these incidents created a scandal, because the godmen in question weren't carrying on an affair in secret while pretending to be oh-so-holy-and-celibate in public.
