காட்டாக (அதாவது எடுத்துக்காட்டாக): முக்கிய விஷயம் = முதன்மைச் செய்தி / சிறப்புப் பொருள் / இன்றியமையாத் தகவல் / தலையாய கருத்து என்று பல பொருள் தருவதாக இருக்கலாம்.

Subject- matter - என்பது பொருள் , கருத்து, உள்ளுறை என்று பல பொருளில் கையாளப்படும் - இடம் குறித்து.

ஆக முக்கிய - என்பதற்கு - தலையாய, இன்றியமையா, சிறப்பு, முதன்மை என்பது உட்பட பல சொற்களை, இடம் பொருள் ஏவல் அறிந்து கையாளலாம்.

முக்கிய விஷயம் - என்பதை கருப்பொருள் என்றும் குறிக்க இயலும்.

விஷயம் என்பதற்கு - குறிப்பு என்கிற சொல்லையும் பெய்ய முடியும்.

A couple of yrs back equa posted a critical review of the film nAdOdigaL mentioning it insulted the audience's intelligence, particular's Sasikumar's sermons. He quoted Jayaram's line to Goundamani in periya idaththu mAppiLLai:

"this reminded of Goundamani's reply to Jayaram in 'periya idaththu mAppiLLai' when the latter says, "sari, nAn vENA oru LKG, UKG varaikkum padichchirukkEn 'nu sollidaREn!"

Plum complained he didn't understand the quote so I posted two 'Tamil' explanations:

Looks like people have run out of words to talk about!

vaarthai comes from Sanskrit 'vArttA' (standard transliteration) or vaarththaa in common use. When some words are borrowed by Tamil the last syllable is shortened and 'ai' is added. sabhaa--> sabhai, gangaa -> gangai ,...,taarakaa -> taarakai, etc. Not sure why? vArttA means 'news', 'word', 'reply' etc depending on the context. We use vaarthai for 'sol' or word. in 'pEchchu vaarthai', vaarthai probably stands for reply. In Telugu it becomes vaarthalu meaning news.

It appears as though none of the younger generation participants had Sanskrit in school!

In some cases, two languages may not have the exact same equivalent word and the meaning is realized with more than one word.

Take this case for e.g., 'vishaya gnAnam' - the most common English usage for vishayam in this context is not just matter but "subject matter"
(SME is a very common term nowadays, "subject matter experttu")

Taking that route, I would say the Thamizh equivalent for vishayam is "பொருள் சார் / பொருள் சார்ந்த", though it doesn't sound colloquial at once.

"எனக்கு இந்தப் பொருள் சார்ந்த அறிவு குறைவுங்க" will be my recommended use. Though it may sound odd initially, over a period of time (like jillA to mAvattam), it will become "natural"

Then over a period of time, "சார்ந்த" will be dropped in day-to-day speech.

And people will simply say "எனக்கு இந்தப்பொருளில் அறிவில்லை / நான் இந்தப்பொருளில் தற்குறி", and it won't feel odd
