    `Thalai` triumphs!
Last Updated: Mon, Oct 23, 2006 05:29 hrs

Sify.com had coined the title ‘King of opening” to the ultimate star Ajith and the actor has once again lived up to his reputation with Varalaaru. The film has taken the best ever opening in Tamilnadu at the Diwali box-office. (seepic: A fan offeringPaalabhishekam on Ajit hoarding)
Varalaaru has taken an extraordinary opening all over Tamilnadu and overseas. In Chennai city and Chengalpet area on the opening Diwali Day, Varalaaru has taken 110 percent opening! The extra 10 percent comes from Ajit fans who watched the film standing and sitting on theatres floors in Chengalpet area!
Says ‘Oscar’ Ravichandran, who is distributing the film in North& South Arcot and Tiruchi area: “Varalaaru is the clear Diwali winner by a mile. It is going to be a milestone in Ajit’s career. The film has not only taken a bumper opening but is all set to be a super hit”.
Added Balasubramaniam of Baba Films, who are distributing the film in Kovai area: “Varalaaru has created a new box-office record in Coimbatore city by collecting a net of Rs 20. 5 Lakhs from four prints in two days”.

If we must not believe Sify news (the Sify website which is favorite of who-you-know) then we must not believe any other news too!! right?

    Ajit cuts Simbu to size!

Last Updated: Sat, Nov 04, 2006 06:40 hrs

Before the release of Vallavan and Varalaaru , Simbu had told his close friends that he is getting two huge screens on Mount Road, Chennai- Devi and Sathyam big screen with combined seating capacity of over 2500 seats to screen his film.
Simbu wanted to prove that he is one-up on Ajit by saying that his film will take a better opening than Varalaaru. The trade however played it cool and never bothered to reply as they thought that it was “immature talk”!
Sathyam cinemas later played neutral as they gave two shows each for Ajit and Simbu at big screen and two shows at small Sree theatre. A peeved Simbu said that his film will replace ‘Thalai’ and he will get four shows at big Sathyam in two weeks.
But now (from Nov 3) the big news is that Varalaaru has grabbed all the four shows at the big screen while Vallavan has been shifted to the smaller screen!
The moral of the story- “Never count your chickens before they are hatched”.

Chimpu is nothing in front of Thala but got to mention this. Those Chimpu had a better market than some of the other heroes in the field (leave the top heroes).....but a movie like Varalaaru which was in the making for a long time, people had lost interest or moved on (yes, Ajith moved on to his next and wasn't sure of if the movie will release), for its production values etc etc....it cut chimpu to pieces... But Kaththi couldn't do the same for Poojai....right?

Thala Ajith was a record creator long time back...it is only now we are hearing some records being created by some actors...also please note no one article has mentioned anything about Ajith in those new records being created cause they very well know about the future movie of Ajith waiting to be released only to break or erase records...

Oh, are you the Cinema trader who knows that Ajith's movie sells below 30C when his movie budget is 40C or 50C? Wow...you make a very good business trader in the making!!

So do you mean to say a VJ film does not reply on any other factor but Ajith's film relies on some or several other factors to become a box office hit, biggest opener etc etc...very nice...

'Billa 2' has made a record among Ajith movies, for its distribution rights for Tamil Nadu have been sold for a whopping Rs 24 crore! V Ravichandran of Aascar Films has bagged the rights from the original producers In Entertainment.

"The theatrical rights from Tamil Nadu have been sold to Ravichandran. Distribution rights for other areas have also been sold, except Kerala. We will make it soon," says Sunir Kheterpal, who heads In Entertainment.

Music for 'Billa 2', composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, will be released on May 1, the birthday of the 'Thala'. This will be followed by aggressive promotions to back the movie's release scheduled for June.

Directed by Chakri Toleti of 'Unnaipol Oruvan' fame, this prequel to 'Billa' has Parvathy Omanakuttan as the heroine and Bruna Abdullah as second female lead. RD Rajasekhar has wielded the camera, while foreign stunt masters were roped in to choreograph action scenes.

When did I say that? Every film depends on something. The star studded vehicles depend lesser. When there is a reason that they do not do well there has got to be a reason when they do exceptionally well too.

Billa-2 distribution rights were sold for less than expected price

We had earlier reported that Billa-2 rights may be possibly sold for record price given Mankatha's reception. Contrary to the belief, the news was confirmed that Aascar production has bought the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights at less than expected levels. This has surprised a number of industry people how Aascar was able to grab the rights for just 26 Crores for entire Tamil Nadu. Here are the unofficial numbers quoted by various distribution network sources,

Tamil Nadu - Rs. 26 Crores (Rs. 24.11 Crores + Rs. 2 crores for marketing)
    Satellite Rights - Rs.7 Crores
    Overseas - Rs. 5.5 Cores
Andhra Pradesh - estimated Rs. 2 Crores (SVR Media) (updated)
    Karnataka - Rs. 2 Crores
Kerala - not sold yet (estimated at 1 Crore)
    North India - Own release

The production cost is estimated around Rs. 40 Crores to Rs. 45 Crores. The distribution rights barely add up to Rs. 50 Crores giving a slender profit (relative to the size of the investment). In comparative terms, the distribution rights are below or in par with Mankatha levels. The challenge quoted by one of the distributor sources is because Ajith is the only saleable name associated with Billa-2 followed by Yuvan at a distant next. Other than these two members, no other star cast, director or crew members have enough track record in Tamil to pull an opening crowd on their own merit.

The good news is that even if the movie happens to make Rs. 50 Crore or more from TN theatricals, it will be quickly termed a Hit/Super Hit due to lower level of investments.

Sharif...business is done based on the budget....you are talking few years back....and you are talking as if you have sold it for 20C for Mankatha...etc etc....we don't have any real picture for the budget of the movies and it is all just speculations as per the news and also the business is not known that openly as the movie product is only made public but the business is only left to the people to speculate, talk and have imaginations....

I am talking about today's movie which will be released....and you are still stuck in 2010 time frame....4 years have passed since...and Ajith's Thala55 YennaiArindhaal movie is speculated to be around 60C...

And you news as you have put in bolded letters...it is a record business...do you expect it to be sold for 100C...it can happen only if you are cinema trader and who would spend 100C to buy Kaththi and make a few Crores profit if Kaththi has indeed grossed more than 100C again here it is the gross and not the net...guess you will end up being a profitable one for VJ, ARM, Lyca etc etc
