The Sound of Music (1965)
In 1930's Austria, a young woman named Maria is failing miserably in her attempts to become a nun. When the Navy captain Georg Von Trapp writes to the convent asking for a governess that can handle his seven mischievous children, Maria is given the job. The Captain's wife is dead, and he is often away, and runs the household as strictly as he does the ships he sails on. The children are unhappy and resentful of the governesses that their father keeps hiring, and have managed to run each of them off one by one. When Maria arrives, she is initially met with the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun soon draws them to her and brings some much-needed joy into all their lives -- including the Captain's. Eventually he and Maria find themselves falling in love, even though Georg is already engaged to a Baroness and Maria is still a postulant. The romance makes them both start questioning the decisions they have made.

காதல் மன்னரின் திரை வரலாற்றின் பின்பகுதியில் சாந்தி நிலையம் முக்கியமான வித்தியாசமான திரைப்படம் 1965ல் வெளியாகி இசையாலும் பாடல்களாலும் பிரம்மாண்டமான வண்ணப் பின்னணியில் குறும்புத்தனம் மிகுந்த குழந்தைகளையும் மனைவியை இழந்து குழந்தைகளுடன் அல்லல்படும் ராணுவ கேப்டனான தந்தையையும் எப்படி ஒரு கிறித்தவ தேவாலயத்தால் அனுப்பப்பட்ட கன்னியாஸ்திரீ மனம் கவருகிறார் என்ற கதையமைப்பால் உலகையே கலக்கி எடுத்த சவுண்ட் ஆப் மியூசிக் என்ற ஆங்கிலப் படத்தின் தழுவலே சாந்தி நிலையம் சிலமாற்றங்களுடன்!! அப்படத்தில் கிறிஸ்டோபர் பிளம்மர் நடித்து சிறப்பித்த தந்தை பாத்திரத்தில் மிக யதார்த்தமாக பொருந்தியிருந்தார் ஜெமினி கணேசன்! ஜூலிஆண்ட்ருஸ் பாத்திரத்தில் காஞ்சனாவும் குழந்தைகளில்ஒருவராக மஞ்சுளாவும் நடித்து மார்க்ஸ் பர்ட்லயின் அபாரமான ஒளிப்பதிவில் என்றும் மறக்க முடியாத இயற்கை என்னும் இளைய கன்னி போன்ற இனியபாடல்களுடன் பெரும் வெற்றி கண்ட உன்னதமான திரைப்படம்

Namak Haram (1973) & Becket (1964) vs Unakkaaga Naan (1976) starring GG with NT

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Namak Haraam” is a movie quite different from his more famous light comedies. This is a film which talks about serious issues of relationship between an employer and his workers. The film is said to be based on “Prana Mithrulu” (Telugu) (1967). It was again remade in Tamil as Unakkaaga Naan starring Sivaji/Gemini Ganesans in 1976 by Balajee!

But both the above mentioned films seem to be inspired from another movie which came in 1964 called “Becket” starring Richard Burton and the Lawrence of Arabia star Peter O'Toole. In this movie too, a friend is given an important post by the King but the chosen one starts taking his job seriously and in turn becomes the King’s opponent.

Unakkaaga Naan was direct remake of Namak Haraam starring Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Sivaji fitted to Amitabh and GG to Rajesh Khanna. Hence more screen space went to GG than NT, who never minds particularly when GG is with him! The story revolves around a rich business magnet befriending a poor and engaging the poor man in the disguise of a trade union leader in his own company for his own benefit. But how that poor lad gets transformed after seeing the perils of working community and 'betrays' the rich friend is the story line! Our film enjoyed a lukewarm response even though the acting was superb with NT and GG!
