In 1979 GG was kind enough to act as a villain, Mir Kaasim, in Kamal-Rajini starrer Alavudinum Arputha Vilakkum! Still GG had not lost his touch of love or action...!! Though the movie was not well received, GG's surprising role as the arch villain, Keeping P.S. Veerappa(!) as the GOOD KING was appreciated.

Kalyana Parisu (Wedding Gift) is a 1959 Tamil romantic drama film produced and directed by C. V. Sridhar in his debut. The film stars Gemini Ganesan, B. Saroja Devi and C. R. Vijaykumari in the lead roles, while K. A. Thangavelu, M. Saroja, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao and M. N. Nambiar play supporting roles.

A triangular love story, the film is about a young man who rents a house near his girlfriend, but the girl's elder sister is not aware of their romance. She subsequently falls for the man and wishes to marry him, so her younger sister decides to sacrifice her love, unknown to the former.

Baskar (Gemini Ganesan) and Vasanthi (Saroja Devi) are college mates. A naughty girl creates misunderstanding between them, and an enraged Vasanthi complains to the college dean, who immediately dismisses Baskar. Now left homeless, Baskar however manages to get employed at a Tea Company, and gets to stay with his close friend Sampath (K. A. Thangavelu). Vasanthi approaches Baskar and apologises for her cruel act. Baskar forgives her, and they both fall in love. Vasanthi lives with her mother and her elder sister Geetha (Vijaykumari) who is unmarried. Baskar rents the vacant portion of their house. Over time, Vasanthi passes her exams and gets employed.

One day when Baskar falls ill, Geetha nurses him and in the process, falls in love with him. She confides her love to Vasanthi who is heartbroken, but decides to sacrifice her love for the sake of her sister. Since Geetha was responsible for raising Vasanthi, she is granted her wish, and Vasanthi convinces Baskar to marry Geetha. After Baskar and Geetha get married, they shift to Coimbatore where Baskar has been transferred. Meanwhile, Vasanthi's manager Raju (Nageshwara Rao) falls in love with her and expresses his desire to marry her, but she is unable to respond to his feelings.

Baskar is not able to lead a happy life in Coimbatore as he often thinks about his disappointment in love. He receives a letter from Vasanthi who advices him to forget about the past and lead a happy life with Geetha, and he relents to this. Shortly, Geetha becomes pregnant and returns to her original home where she delivers a son. Raju again meets Vasanthi and proposes to her, but she tells him her past history and expresses her inability to respond to his love. Heartbroken, Raju leaves her and resigns from his job. Vasanthi’s mother dies and Vasanthi joins Geetha at their house in Coimbatore. When Geetha falls sick, Vasanthi attends to all the household work. Baskar spends more time with Vasanthi than his own wife, and Geetha, suspecting them of being in a relation, abuses them both. Due to this, Vasanthi leaves them.

Geetha, having realised that Baskar and Vasanthi loved each other, dies in guilt, leaving Baskar alone to bring up their child, making him promise that he will find Vasanthi and make her the child's mother. He searches for Vasanthi all over the city, with no success. Meanwhile, Vasanthi meets with an accident, but is saved by a wealthy old man (M. N. Nambiar) who allows her to stay in his house. The man's son arrives and is revealed to be Raju, who Vasanthi agrees to marry. Through Sampath, Baskar learns about Vasanthi's impending marriage, and rushes to the marriage hall with his son. However by the time they arrive, Vasanthi is already married. Baskar then hands over his child to her as a wedding gift, and walks away.

The film marked the directorial debut for C. V. Sridhar, who was previously a partner in the production unit Venus Pictures, where he was an associate of S. Krishnamurthi and T. Govindarajan since 1956. In 1959, he created the story of Kalyana Parisu and narrated it to Krishnamurthy and Govindarajan, expressing his desire to direct the film. Though his partners liked the story, they were sceptical about his directorial capabilities and discouraged him. Sridhar requested them to give him a chance and offered to direct a few scenes for their approval. If they approved of his work, he would continue, otherwise some other director could be selected. He directed a few scenes, everyone was pleased with the outcome and he continued.

Chitralaya Gopu, who was previously an employee the ACA Enterprises, Triplicane, joined as an associate writer for the film, after which his "tryst with cinema began". Aloysius Vincent, who would later become a successful "multi-lingual filmmaker" was signed to handle the film's cinematography, while N. M. Shankar was signed as the editor. The film's script started out as a "love triangle" of two sisters in love with the same man and one eventually sacrificing the lover for her sister. The sisters were played by C. R. Vijaykumari and the-then "upcoming actor" B. Saroja Devi, whose breakthrough came previously with Nadodi Mannan. The role of the male lead was given to Gemini Ganesan, while K. A. Thangavelu and M. Saroja were signed for the comedy sequences. Even though Ganesan had contracted typhoid, Sridhar felt that only he could do "justice to the role" and had to wait for him to get better before casting him.

The film's soundtrack was composed by A. M. Rajah in his debut in Tamil cinema, while the lyrics were penned by Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram. All the songs were acclaimed, and contributed to the film's success. The success of Kalyana Parisu's songs made P. Susheela a leading female playback singer of Tamil cinema.

The soundtrack received positive response. Tamil film historian S. Theodore Baskaran said, "Its songs were stupendous hits. It owed its phenomenal success in large part to its music composed by A.M. Raja, who was at his peak as a playback singer. the filmic convention of singing the same song twice, once in joy and once in sorrow, is followed. in fact, there are two such happy-sad songs.

Kalyana Parisu turned out very profitable with a silver jubilee run of over 175 days, and became one of C. V. Sridhar's biggest box-office hits.Kalyana Parisu, which created a major impact on the Tamil film industry, was the breakthrough for B. Saroja Devi and music director A. M. Rajah. Actor Sivaji Ganesan, after seeing the preview of the film, highly appreciated it and predicted that it would become a box office hit.

With the success of Kalyana Parisu, director C. V. Sridhar launched his own production company, Chitralaya Pictures, and he later "went on to scale greater heights" in Hindi, Telugu and Kannada cinema as well. At the 7th National Film Awards, the film won the Certificate of Merit for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

Kalyana Parisu received positive critical response. Ananda Vikatan (26 April 1959) said, "We are happy to see a good story in a Tamil film for the first time... The film does not have any villain and everyone has a good heart... In totality, the film deserves a prize for its story, a prize for its acting and a prize for its dialogues and that is Kalyana Parisu."IndiaGlitz called it "immortal".

In a 2007 interview with S. R. Ashok Kumar The Hindu, director K. Balachander said, "‘Kalyanaparisu,’ a love story, is the first of its kind. I became director Sridhar’s fan after watching it."

Film historian Randor Guy called it "remarkable", and stated the film would be "remembered for the deft direction, interesting storyline, cinematography, music, and, above all, the comedy sequences of Thangavelu and Saroja."

Malathi Rangarajan of The Hindu called the film " A love story with well etched characters", and praised the actor's performances as "excellent". In 2005, India Today called Ganesan's performance as "memorable".

The success of Kalyana Parisu led to it being remade several times with different actors in the lead:

    Kalyana Parisu (Tamil)(1959)
    Pelli Kanuka (Telugu)(1960)
    Nazrana (Hindi)(1961)
    Premanubandha (Kannada)(1981)
    Devatha (Telugu)(1982)
    Tohfa (Hindi)(1984)

    Story :

Rajalingam (Gemini Ganesan) is the only son of Ramalingam (T. S. Balaiah), the zamindar of Kalathur. Kannamma (Savithri) is the daughter of Murugan (S. V. Subbaiah), a farmer of the same place. On the zamindar's advice, Murugan sends his daughter to Madras for higher education. While returning from Madras, Kannamma meets Raja in the train. Noticing her respect and awe for the zamindar, Raja calls himself an electrician visiting the zamin palace. They fall in love. A few days later, Kannamma learns the truth and to reassure her, Raja marries her secretly in a temple.

Two days later, Raja has to go abroad for higher studies. During his absence, Ramalingam learns of the marriage and orders Kannamma to forget his son. Moved by the zamindar's feelings, Kannamma promises never to mention their marriage to anyone. Kannamma is now in the family way. Ramalingam arranges for the stay of Murugan and Kannamma in a nearby town, Sevalpatti. Murugan, who is ashamed of Kannamma's love affair, leaves Kannamma's newborn son in an orphanage and lies that the child was stillborn. They both decide to leave the place and settle in Bangalore.

When Raja returns, he learns that Kannamma had left Kalathur. His enquiries in Sevalpatti lead him to believe that Kannamma had led an immoral life. Grief-stricken, he travels from place to place to forget Kannamma and takes to drinking as a last resort. In Bangalore, he encounters Kannamma in a dancer's house where she had come to teach the dancer’s daughter. Her presence in the house and reticence to Raja’s questions strengthens his belief that Kannamma is a woman of ill repute and in disgust, he returns home.

Kannamma’s son Selvam grows up into an intelligent boy (Kamal Haasan) and is living in the orphanage in Sevalpatti. Murugan visits the orphanage and on meeting Selvam, decides to shift to Sevalpatti to be near him. Kannamma becomes a teacher in Selvam’s school and feels attracted to him. She invites him to stay with her but he refuses as he has to look after Mani, a lame orphan living with him. Raja is invited to Sevalpatti by Singaram, a rich merchant who wants to marry his daughter Maduram (Devika) to him, to preside over a school function. Raja takes a fascination for Selvam who acts in the school drama. He encounters Kannamma again and orders the Headmistress to dismiss her.

Mani is seriously ill and Selvam turns to Raja for help, but Mani eventually dies. Raja takes Selvam with him to the zamin. On Selvam's insistence, he stops drinking and to give him a mother, also decides to marry Maduram. A seriously ill Murugan confesses to Kannamma that her child is not dead and reveals the identity of Selvam. Kannamma tries to contact Selvam but does not find him in the orphanage. The news shocks Murugan and to soothe his nerves, they move down to their village Kalathur. In the local temple, Kannamma meets Selvam and tells him that she is his mother. On learning from him that Raja is bringing him up and is marrying shortly to find him a mother, she asks him not to mention anything about her to Raja. While preparations were going on for the marriage of Raja with Maduram, she comes to know from Selvam that he is the son of Raja. Singaram insists on a written undertaking that the properties of Raja would go to the children of Maduram only. The news of this conflict spreads in the village.

On learning this, Murugan rushes to the palace to own the boy, but collapses near the palace gate. Kannamma who has followed, takes Selvam and tries to move away when she is intercepted by Raja who demands the boy back. Raja refuses to believe that Selvam is Kannamma’s son and abuses Kannamma for her shameless life. Ramalingam observes that even in such a humiliating situation, Kannamma is silent and does not breathe a word about her promise to him. He is moved and acknowledges her as his daughter-in-law. Selvam is united with his parents, and Raja’s marriage with Maduram is cancelled.

Originally, T. Prakash Rao was the director of the film, before being replaced by A. Bhimsingh. He had directed "nearly half the film", but because producer A. V. Meiyappan and he "didn't see eye to eye", the entire film was re-shot by Bhimsingh. The film was written by Javar Seetharaman, and is said to have been adapted from the Moral Rearmament Army's play The Forgotten Factor. It is also said to have been inspired by the 1960 film Nobody's Child. While Gemini Ganesan and Savitri were cast in the lead roles, Kamal Haasan – who was then a child, was cast in the film, making his debut in cinema. (The original choice for Haasan's role was Daisy Irani, who appeared with GG in Yaar Paiyan, had been already been paid INR10,000 in advance. S. P. Muthuraman, who later became a leading director in Tamil cinema, made his debut as an assistant director in this film.

There are two versions regarding Kamal Haasan's entry into this film: One version has it that, as a little boy, he accompanied a doctor who went to treat an ill woman at the home of Meiyappan. On hearing loud shouting from a first-floor tenant of the bungalow, the doctor became uneasy. The young Kamal Haasan strode up the stairway to ask the noisemaker not to shout over the phone as someone was ill, leaving the person astonished. An impressed Meiyappan later provided him an entry into films. However, the more accepted version states that when young boy Kamal Haasan accompanied a family doctor of Meiyappan to his house, producer AVM Saravanan noticed Kamal as a hyperactive child. He took him over and introduced to Meiyappan who was looking for a young boy to play a role in the film Kalathur Kannamma.

The film's original soundtrack was composed by R. Sudharsanam. Lyrics for the songs were written by various lyricists like Kannadasan, Vaali and Kothamangalam Subbu.

The Hindi Version of Kalathur Kannamma had Sunil Dutt / Meenakumari/Babloo Jagirdhar replacing GG/Savithri/Kamal!

For a change, enjoy the hindi equivalent songs too!!
