National award winning director Bala announced his first full-fledged comedy entertainer Avan Ivan. This is the first time director Bala, who is famous for his serious and dark subjects, is trying his hand at comedy. The film narrates the story of two siblings; earlier, real life brothers Suriya-Karthi and Jiiva-Ramesh were considered for the two main leads. But finally Arya and Vishal were chosen!

Both Arya and Vishal have tonsured their heads for this film. The actors also avoided public appearance to keep their looks secret. Reportedly Vishal plays the role of a transgender in the film, which is expected to elevate him to the next level in acting.

Vishal recently spoke about the reason behind introducing him as a squint-eyed character in the movie. After observing Vishal's initial acting, director Bala complained about his urban mannerisms and body language, which were unsuitable for the character.

Bala also wanted Vishal's character to appear unattractive and planned to introduce a squint eye. Vishal added that the role became very popular after the promotional materials of the movie were released. Though Vishal takes pride in his role, he said that he had undergone great pains to imitate a squint eye, which left him with intense eye pain and headaches after the filming. The film is expected to grace theatres on May 20, 2011.

Directed by newcomer Vendhan and starring Nitin Sathya and Disha Pandey, this movie highlights the issue of sexual abuse reported from some mental asylums in Tamil Nadu. Nitin plays a call-taxi driver who falls in love with a call center girl whom he has not met. The music has been provided by Kannan who is looking for a solid hit to establish his credentials in the industry. Now, onto the music review.

A song that has very mild instrumentals and lets the lead singer go through her routine in a very melodious manner. There is a male version of the same song as well, which follows pretty much the same pattern. Two short and sweet songs more like lullabies.

There are numerous such songs before this but the genre of this song is such that it is likeable instantly. Addictive beats and energetic singing make this a harmless experience. Can expect some fast dance moves and happy moments on screen. A trademark ‘thiruvizha’ song.

A love-failure song which is dramatic and Haricharan is the right singer to deliver the goods for this song. The violin has been used well in this song as well, reminiscent of Raja.

Verdict: On the whole, an album with the focus clearly on melody. Kannan has brought out a decent album which is worth a shot.

Earlier titled Masala Café, Kalakalappu happens to be Sundar.C’s return to his primary profession – direction. It also happens to be his 25th film. There is an ensemble cast featuring young, upcoming stars. The glamorous avatar of hitherto homely belles, Anjali and Oviya, has ensured that this movie has got enough and more eyeballs. Of course, Santhanam is there. Vijay Ebenezer of ‘Kanden’ fame provides the music. Let’s see if his debut was just a flash in the pan or whether he is here to stay with Masala Cafe.

There is a very similar song in ‘Kanden’ (UnnaiKandene). Still, the peppy, energetic rap of Dr. Burn (reminiscent of Akon) makes this song a winner. Krish sounds very similar to the aforementioned song.

The lead singer’s pronunciation is bad to say the least. Nevertheless, a song that talks about the unsolvable riddle that women are. A nice slow paced ‘gaana’ number. The references to Kannadasan and Kamal Haasan are striking. Might visit the charts for the naughty and light hearted quality that the song has.

This song is another joy ride. The song gives you a happy and cheerful mood. Might probably be the intro song featuring the two heroes. A festive atmosphere can be expected in the theaters when this song plays out. The lyrics harp on the joy aspect while also being inspirational.

Mokkamanusha…
Steevevatz & Suchithra Karthik

The joy aspect continues into this song as well. This is a masala soaked duet literally and one can expect some glamour on screen.

The male lead has shades of Srikanth Deva’s voice. The entire song sounds like one of Yuvan and Simbu’s collaborations. The ‘life e masala’ refrain makes the song endearing.

Unnaipattri Unnidame…
Devan & Prashanthini

A romantic song with a tune that has been heard innumerable times before, but, sounds good. The ‘nadaswaram’ notes are a surprise addition to the song and the flute instrumental interlude accompanied by the female humming before the second stanza is top notch.

Ava Thirumbipaarthu…
Karthik & Anitha

This is a solo from Karthik. Sounds pleasant but the tune is notoriously familiar to many hit songs of the recent past. Remember ‘Kalangathaala’ from ‘Venghai’? This song gives a soft finish to the album to make it six songs in all, for the listener. Wonder which of the two pairs will be featured in this song or will it be both?

Verdict: A nice collection of numbers. The focus is equally on masala and melody songs as well. The songs of Sundar’s 25th venture sound good for sure.

Imman has been entrusted with the music and Imman has a pretty decent track record in the industry. Is he in good form? Let’s find out.

Saisharan and S.Malavika

After the super success of the ‘Jingu Chikka’ song in ‘Mynaa’, Imaan traverses on a very similar path with this song. It is foot tapping but the sheer magic created by the earlier song is hard to live up to. The singers have the required fizz to make the song enjoyable, nevertheless. Can visit the charts for sure but real popularity can be expected only when the film hits the screens.

Aalaap Raju and Surmukhi

Aalaap Raju seems to have enjoyed himself singing this romantic number. The beats are likable while the tabla percussions and the instrumentals comprising flute and Spanish guitar make sure the song retains the charm right through.

Oorana Oorukkulla…
Santhosh Hariharan

This is a folksy number ridden with a bit of pathos in the lyrics. The violin adds to the mellow mood of the song. The beats are energetic and make sure the song is entertaining. The lead singer is expressive. As the hero sings about his skewed love life, we can expect the scene to be of the hero along with a group of his friends.

Po Po Po…
Javed Ali

The name of the song gives an idea about the genre of the song straightaway, a love failure song again. Javed Ali is back after a small hiatus and his pronunciation is much polished compared to some of his previous efforts in Tamil. The instrumentals before both the stanzas are dramatic and have elaborate arrangements. The end violin instrumentals make the song even more passionate. This song might find many takers in the male crowd.

Yenna Solla…
Vijay Prakash, Chinmayi Sripada

The song begins on a classy note with strings and what follows is a likable duet which has tasteful instrumentals with a lot of variety. The guitar usage in particular and the female chorus endear the song even more. The song moves at a steady pace with pretty heavy percussive usage.

Verdict: Imman has a winner with this Ezhil movie. After ‘Mynaa’ the expectations from him are high and this album has done no harm to his status as a composer of note.

Blockbuster hit maker S.S. Rajamouli is getting into Tamil cinema with this bilingual featuring upcoming stars Samantha and Nani. Both of them are taking their baby steps in Tamil cinema while Kannada superstar Sudeep will be making his first Tamil appearance. The audio was released recently. Star Telugu composer Keeravani aka Maragathamani is making a comeback to Tamil cinema through this. Let’s see if he has lived up to his standards.

Eedaa Eedaa...
Ranjith

Starts off with Hindi lyrics as is expected from most of the actual Telugu songs. The theme of the movie (a housefly (ee) taking revenge on the villain) has been translated into this song. The song is fast paced and can be expected to be accompanied by some graphically enhanced visuals of the ‘ee’ going about its business. The treatment of the song is pretty vociferous given the passionate lyrics about revenge, the ‘kollanum’ segment in particular. It really picks up steam with the ‘Eedaa Eedaa’ refrain. Might visit the charts.

Eedaa Eedaa (Remix)...

There is a remix version of the same song which is pretty chaotic and follows the general remix pattern. A shrill synthesized voice has been overused in this remix. On the whole, the remix is nowhere near the original.

Konjam Konjam...
Vijay Prakash

The guitar instrumentals are the standout aspect of this romantic song. Vijay Prakash in low pitched mode sounds cheerful nevertheless. The uncanny resemblance to composer Bharadwaj’s voice is unmistakable. It is a different experience on the whole, given the unhurried pace and the tasteful instrumental arrangements.

Lava Lava...
Achu, Shivani

Starts off in low pitched mode with base instrumentals before moving into a very spirited ‘Lava Lava’ refrain with rock guitar accompaniments.It’s admirable that veteran composer Maragathamani aka Keeravani is so trendy. An entertaining offbeat number that could find many takers.

Veesum Velichathile...
Karthik, Sahithi

This song is a nice pleasant melody with minimum fuss. Karthik brings his trademark charm to this song which sounds like a lullaby. The mouth organ instrumentals add a nice finishing touch to this sure-shot melody. Though the heard before feel dominates, the song sounds good.

Verdict: A nice compilation of numbers by Maragathamani, as he makes a comeback to Tamil cinema through this bilingual. If the film delivers what is expected, then some of the songs will catch on in a big way, particularly the title song.
