Nice article :

We confuse ourselves by calling people like Pritam ‘music directors’. We take the term to be something akin to ‘composers’, and hence expect originality. Let’s call them ‘music producers’ — those who spot, buy, re-record and mix tunes.
Most of Pritam’s peers will fall under this label. And the real composers will heave a sigh of relief.

Some people defend copying by saying it is 'inspiration'.
To me both are copy! MDs like Deva are unashamed and do blatant copies. Others take some ideas , beats from western and even other indian songs to come out with with 'new' songs. They think people do not notice.
There are just so many 'inspirational songs' nowdays, that I think indian MDs are running out of real creativity.
1 eg: When i heard Kilimanjaro for the 1st time it reminded me of the opening interlude and base of 'When doves cry' by Prince.
It is not just the MD , even the movie directors are taking bits and parts from western counterparts and making so called 'new' movies and expect people to praise them. People flock to the theaters to see them. WHat choice they have? Better to see a copied quality movie that even worse stupid storied movies.
3 idiots is one of the great feel good movies of recent times that looked very original.
Unnaipol oruvan was critically praised by many. But just how many countless Western movie had the same sub-plot?
In fact Unnaipol oruvan had the feel lof a low budget movie, with unextended story line. It started well iwith its copied story. But later the director seem to lost creativity in continuing the story to have more cinematic grandeur.
