About 25 years back Prof Hart wanted to establish a Tamil Chair in UC,Berkeley to make sure they continued to offer Tamil after is retirement. The university told him that they would do it if he established an endowment of $400K. He and his wife kausalya sent out requests asking for donations. I also received a few copies of the request because my son was doing his B.S(EECS). He was taking a course in Tamil taught by Kausalya.
Guess what happened. At that time there were 50000 Tamils in the US and about 5000 in California (from what I heard).
If every Tamil in the US donated an average of $10 they would have collected $500K in a short period. If the 5000 Tamils in CA contributed $10 each they would have collected the same amount.
But, in the first year they collected about $120K ( I used to get the donor list because I was a donor). It took four years, with a large donation by a businessman, to collect the required amount. That was/is the mindset of the Tamils here. They will talk about Tamil for their children etc. They won't do much. I think it is changing slowly.

Bharathiyar said " Vaai chollil veeraradi" . We don't give back to society. Sad !

    I am still a donor for UC,Berkeley !

Here is a melodious song from a K. Balachandar movie; composed not by Ilaiyaraja, Viswanathan, Ramamoorthy or A.R.Rahman, but by
Telugu music director Koduri Keeravani (known as M.M. Keeravani in Telugu movies, M.M. Kreem in Hindi movies, and Maragathamani in Tamil).
The song is sung by Balu & Sandhya(?), and features classy Mammootty and beautiful and talented Bhanupriya…

I have often been accused of of "overdoing" things, and I know this is probably one of those occasions.
I had to do this just to show what a good dancer Bhanupriya was/is! Here are K. Balachandar,
Mammootty, Bhanupriya, Balu, Pulamaippiththan and Maragathamani at their very best...
