In large Temples in South India.... normally we do not feel much sultry or congested comparatively even during the hot Summer... even in the midst of heavy crowd....

..including the small Store rooms wihout Windows or Ventilators....

...as well as the Sanctum Sanctorum (Garbha-griham)...

...far away from Open spaces of free Wind-flow.

    How and Why.?

I feel the building material stone has a special quality of coolness. All public buildings, big, spacious ones like my old college, are big stone buildings too! Even in houses of our ancestors stones had a major share. I fondly remember the stone ledge, a finely chiselled shelf in my grandma's house for keeping water pots, specially, smoothly carved semi-spherical pits on which the pots sit well. I have heard elders explain to me that the stone shelf helps water to remain cool even in the hottest summer. Ingenuous methods when fridge was unknown!

Our ancient architects, artisans who designed & erected those beautiful structures called temples had excellent, incomparable, engineering skills, knew aesthetics, symmetry, acoustics, wind flow & every other detail connected with architecture. Temples were not only places for worship but communal, social, educational, entertaiment centres too, all wound in one package. A place where people converged. Mathematical precision vied with poetic imagination seen in the sculptures.

Waiting for interesting, illuminating explanations from a veteran!
There are Three Reasons for such an Incredible NATURAL effect... even with LARGE CROWDS and Scanty Windows and Ventilators.

    (1) The Tall Gopuram in front of the Temple... followed by the series of small Gopurams on the way upto the Main Temple Building causes an ARTIFICIAL WINDFLOW... from outside the Temple towards the innner Temple Sanctum Sanctorum...

..since the Gopurams are constructed so, to force the high altitude Cool-Wind downwards and driven through the wide and tall Gateway just beneath the Gopuram.

Such an artificial draught constantly agitated and thrust inwardly... keeps the whole atmosphere of the Temple premises contained within the Tall outer Boundary walls all around the Interior.

When we stand just beneath the Front Gopuram so called Rajagopuram...

...we can conspicuously feel the heavy gush of Cool-wind inwardly...

...far lower in temperature than that of the wind outside.

Because the Wind-flow towards the interior is the down-driven right from the full height of the Gopuram

    (2) Besides as per the Agama and Vasthu Sasthras prescribed for Temples... there always used to be wide Open space all around the Main Temple, almost centrally situated.

Such a Windy Open-space all around... maintains the constant balancing of the atmospheric air temperature in between the Buildings of the premises.

    (3) In large sized temples... there used to be four or more number of Gopurams.. on all sides.. one on each direction... ensuring unfailing drawal of wind from all directions around.

This provision improves the Cooling effect more effectively and predominantly.

At Srirangam, after raising the main Rajagopuram in Front... facing the South... not only the Temple... but also the whole Srirangam town has become much cooler and more comfortably airy than
    before...the people feel.

Because of the Southern windflow called THENRAL (Very pleasingly Coolest wind) in Tamil...

...the Cool-atmosphere and free natural Wind-flow is more effective.

    . Trash Paper SHRUNK.?

When we throw the Trash / Waste paper towards the adjacent Trash-Box...

We Shrink and Squeeze the paper to a Ball-shape or Tear off to Pieces. Why.?

And the Aim of direction is more perfect... PROPORTIONATE with the amount of paper Shrunk to as Small in size as possible.

Why.? What causes such an effect.?

Of course, the lesser the area of surface, the lesser the air resistance. For a given volume, the spherical shape has the least area of surface among all possible shapes.

Ultimately this leads to better precision towards reaching the target along the direction of force. I guess for the same reason aircraft tips and bullets are shaped so ( or anything that requires good aerodynamic properties).

    Love and Light.

.Our Friend "anbu kadhir" has touched the right tip of the berg.

Yes. When the paper is wide open or not shrunk at all...

...there are several ANTI-FORCES... to the maximum Magnitudue (Extent /Content)... working on that Paper thrust by the force of throw towards the Trash box.

Out of all such forces.. the most predominant force is... the Friction with Air around. ..

...PROPORTIONATE with the Area of Paper Surface of contact with Air.

So... the more the Area of the Paper in contact with the Air... will cause the more Counter-force against the Thrust force towards the Trash box...

Depending upon the shape and folds of the paper... the Air force works upon it from various directions.

Consequenty... it forces the paper in a different direction from the one directed by the person.

Besides since the extent of counter-force is proportionate with the Surface area of Air-contact...

...the speed of the paper-throw gets reduced commensurate with the area of contact.

So we reduce the Area of outer Air-contact by shrinking its size...

..as also reshape it to as spherical as possible...

....since it causes maximum reduction of forces from different directions.

Thus our Aim of direction as well as positive drop within the Target we decide to...

...by SHRINKING to the maximum extent towards a Non-resistent SLIPPERY Outer-Surface...

...alongside the FASTEST REACH... to the Target is..

    ...practically achieved...
