Thanks Karikalan and as Rakesh said welcome. It is my pleasure to share all those informations about NT and I am glad that like me there are numerous persons who had grown up with those lovely memories. One correction, Tirisoolam was in 1979 Jan and 1978 contains some great hits, which would be posted today.
Rakesh, what you had told me last week seems to be very much right. Let the tribe grew.
tac,
Sorry. My mistake. Annan Oru Kovil is NewCinema. Thanks for pointing it out and edited accordingly.
As per Deepam, yes it was without jodi but still went on to become a major hit. It contained the famous Perunthalaivar's last words "விளக்கை அணைச்சிட்டு போ" in the climax. I am given to understand by Raghavendar that it would have easlily crossed Silver Jublie in Shanthi but for the theatre management already having contracted to run Devar Films Hindi film.
Regards

Y'day watched a NT song in one of the channels.
Sung by Jayachandran, " Nenjil ulla kaayam ondru, nenjai vittu theerndhadhu....".
What's the name of the film, please ?

Dear Sri Mohan,
It's from the film RISHIMOOLAM.

I was at school in 77, and I remember the string of Sivaji hits - Deepam, Annan Oru Kovil, Thyagam, Ennai pol Oruvan... Clearly my memory is at fault here, but I thought Avan oru saritthiram, Ilaiya thalaimurai, Nam pirandha mann weren't successful. In fact, my memory is that the cameo by Gemini Ganesan in Nam Pirandha mann got more kudos than even Sivaji & Kamal. I was a hardcore Sivaji fan during those days and remember being bitterly disappointed at the failure of Avan oru saritthiram, Ilaiya thalaimurai etc. Perhaps the failure is relative - compared to hits like Annan oru kovil etc.
I still remember the Anandha vikatan review for Annan oru kovil. They used to give marks for all aspects of film during those days. For the acting category, they would usually assign marks to hero, heroine, other actors/actresses and kind of average them. For AOK, they wrote like this:
Sivaji - 70
Sivaji - 70
Sivaji - 70
Sivaji - 70
Nice way of indicating the dominance of Sivaji in AOK...

Dear Murali,
As usual, nice NT movie summary for the year 1978.
Among the lot, I would choose E P Oruvan is the best - but, it is disheartening to see that this movie run was not up to the mark. E P Oruvan is a real treat, in which NT looks better and it is not an usual tear-jerking movie. More importantly, unlike other dual-role movies, E P Oruvan has got both NTs come in young role.
I am yet to see what is so special with Thiyagam? Of course, it is a decent entertainer, but I always wonder why it had such a monster run. One of my cousins used to proudly claim that he saw this movie over 25 times during the first release itself. One thing I must admit that the movie has got beautiful songs, tuned by Illayaraja.
Regards

Another great list of records, Murali-sar.
Tac, I am a fan of Thyagam. Yes, the music played a part. But its NTs role...something that many can relate to. Misunderstood individual...someone grounded, earthy, with ordinary vices, and lives an empty life rejected by the love of his life. I think many of fans can relate to that....we all have gone through that phase one, some more than once. Well narrated role...and the supporting cast were good too (comedy somehow misfired).

Dear tac,
Thyagam was based on Uttam Kumar's Amanush. And after Deepam, K Vijayan proved his identity in remakes and Thyagam was one step further. The approach between CVRajendran and KVijayan in remakes were different. A very good businessman K. Balaji, brought in new comer Ilaiyaraaja from the film Deepam which proved he was right in his approach. In fact as I told somewhere else, if at all Ilaiyaraaja-TMS-Kannadasan combo had given more numbers it would have definitely taken TFM to great heights.
Raghavendran.
