Historical Study of Kalahasthi Temple of early Tamil Nadu & subsequent Andhra Pradesh

    Author - Virarajendra

    Under Construction

A Historical Study of Thiru Kaalahasthi (Siva) Temple of early Tamil Nadu and subsequent Andhra Pradesh - Part 1

    (1) Prologue

The Saivaism that developed within Tamil Nadu from the original Saivaism from Nepal - nurtured and nourished by already existing Tamil - Religious Concepts, Traditions, and Culture of the ancient Tamilians, and by the subsequent Tamil Saiva Saints of Tamil Nadu, was known as the "Tamil Saivaism" (like that developed in Karnataka was known as Vira Saivaism and that developed in Kashmir as Kashmira Saivaism).

    (2) The territorial limits of Ancient Tamil Nadu and the location of Kaalahasti Temple

From the ancient times the Venkadam Hills found reference in the Tamil Literature of the relevent periods, and around 650 B.C. the great Tamil Grammetical work "Tholkaappiam" makes the first mention to Venkadam stating that the northern and southern boundries of then Tamil Nadu were "vada Venkadam then Kumari aayidai Thamil koorum nalulakam (the great region where Tamil was spoken in between northern Venkadam [hills] and southern Kanyakumari [sea])". This is further confirmed by reference in the Tamil Epic "Silappathikaarem" of the 175 A.D. as "Nediyon kuntramum (Venkata hills) Thodiyol pauvamum (Kanyakumari sea) Thamil varambaruththa (Tamil boundaries) than punal nannaattu" (refer chapter - venit kaathai). Further in the epilogue (nootkatturai) of "Silappathikaaram" it is stated the boundaries of then Thamilakam was "Kumari, Venkadam, Kuna (east) Kuda (west) kadalal (sea) mandini marungit than Thamil varaippu". The "Sangam period Poetess "Kaakkai Paadiniyaar" has referred to same as "Vadakkum, Thetkkum Kudakkum Kunakkum - Venkatam, Kumari theempunal Pauvam entru an naan kellai". Another Sangam period Tamil Literary work "Ahanaanooru" mentions that Venkatam region belonged to the "Thondaiman kings" as "Vinai navil yaanai virat poar Thondaiyar ina(thu), malai thavalum eatraru nendunkoattu oangu vell aruvi Venkadaththu"

The Kaalahasti Temple is located in the south of Venkadam Hills and north-east of Thiruppathi Temple in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

    (3) The Origin of the Kalahasti Temple

One of the prime concepts of "Tamil Saivaism" was that God Siva ("God as Siva") was represented in five element forms of the Universe a concept which developed in Tamil Nadu - as Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Space, and was represented in his symbolic forms as Panchalingams (five Lingams) with each Lingam representing an element. Further concepts that these five elements were associated with five important Siva-Temple Shrines all being within Tamil Nadu too developed, and were known as Panchabootha Thalams (shrines). These Temple Shrines were Thiruvannaamalai (Fire), Thiruvaanaikkaa (Water), Thirukkaalaththi (Air), Kanchipuram (Earth), and Chithambaram (Space) respectively. (However very unfortunately the Thirukkaalaththi temple which formed a part of the early Tamil Nadu, has now been included into Andhra Pradesh during the formation of States on linguistic basis within India in A.D.1956)

The Kaalahasti Temple being in the south of Venkadam Hills formed a part of 'then' Thondai Nadu of Tamil Nadu. The river named "Muhali" was flowing adjacent to this temple, as per the Tamil Thevara Pathikams sung on this temple by Tamil Saiva Saint Thirunaavukkaraser of the sixth century A.D. which subsequently came to be known as "Pon-muhali aaru". It was renamed as "Swarnamuki" during the period of rule over this region by the Naayakkar kings of Andhra Pradesh in the seventeenth century. This temple has many Inscriptions on its walls of which many of them are in Tamil Language, and was greatly patronised by the Pallava, Chola, Paandiya kings of Tamil Nadu and subsequently by the Vijayanagara and Nayakkar kings.

    (4) Subsequent "Mythological Stories" relating to the origin of Kaalahasti Temple

There are two Mythological Stories that are in vogue on the origin of the Kaalahasti temple. One being that a Suyambu Lingam which came into existance at this region was worshiped by an Elephant, Silanthi, and a Snake and hence the name of Kalahasthi came into existance and they were blessed by God Siva and given salvation. This story was known as early as Third Thamil Sangam period which is referred to in the Poet Nakkirar's composition the Kayilaipaathi Kaalathipaathi. The other being the Aathisheshan on shaking the Kailaayamalai (Himlayas) a portion of which shredded and one peace fell at this region and was known as Kaalahasthimalai - which could be left 'as-it-is' and taken as pure mythological stories on this shrine. The truth in respect of the origin of Kaalahasthi temple (earlier Kaalaththi when it formed a part of Tamil Nadu) - is that it was a temple built to represent God Siva (God-as-Siva) in the form of Vaayu (Air).

    Note:

In Hinduism there are many mythological stories relating to various Temple Shrines in Tamil Nadu including the Kaalahasti temple formerly of Tamil Nadu and presently of Andhra Pradesh. During the early period of Tamil Nadu some of these mythological stories developed in Tamil Nadu itself, and much more during the rule of Pallava kings - in north Tamil Nadu and at times also in central Tamil Nadu. During the subsequent period during the rule of Naayakkar kings in certain regions of Tamil Nadu further mythological stories cameforth heavily associted with the temples of Tamil Nadu. The mythological stories that developed during the period of both Pallava kings and subsequent Naayakkar kings with Sanskrit Vedic Religion practised by these two dynasties having been given great patronage under them, came into Tamil Nadu from Andhra Pradesh. The Vedic Religion subsequently got amalgamated with the Tamil Saivaism and Tamil Vaisnavaism that had developed earlier in Tamil Nadu. Many Thalapuranams both in Sanskrit and Tamil that came into existance in Tamil Nadu during the period of Naayakkar rule, too have many mythological stories attached to them on the origin of each of these Thiruththalams .

    (5) The Kalaththi (Kaalahasti) Temple during the third Thamil Sangam period of Tamil Nadu

Kaalaththi Temple of the mid third Thamil Sangam Period, was adorned by praise poetic works by the Sangam Poets - Nakkirar, Kallaadenaar, and Nakkirar. The latter composed a lengthy poetic work titled "Kailai paathi Kaalaththi paathi Anththaathi" equating the holiness of Kalahasthi as equivalent to the worship of Kailayamalai.

The earliest reference to the Kalahasthi is referred to in the Tamil religious work named "Kayilai Paathi Kaalaththi Paathi' by poet Kapilar of the third Thamil Sangam. In same Kapilar has mentioned about the Kalaththi Temple and the Pon Muhali Aru as follows:

    நன் முகில் சேர் காளத்தி நாதன் அடி பணிந்து
    பொன் முகிலி ஆடுதலும் போம்

[i]11th Thirumurai - Kayilai Paathi Kaalaththi Paathi (line 375) by Tamil Sangam period Poet Nakkirrar[i]

From the above it is confirmed the original Tamil name of this temple shrine was known as "Kaalaththi (காளத்தி)" from the third Thamil Sangam period throughout the Pallava and Chola periods, and only from the subsequent Vijayanagara period it came to be known as "Kaalahasthi" (காளஹஸ்தி ) in the Sanskritised form.

    (6) The Kannappa Naayanaar as known to the third Thamil Sangam period Tamil Poets (B.C.325-A.D.350)

The event of Kannappa Naayanar took place at Kaalaththi around a time of 'mid' Third Thamil Sangam period or earlier, and
Poet Nakkirar further composed a poetic work as "Thirukannappathevar Thirumaram" in which the name of the mother of Kannappar of Kaalaththi as Thatthai and his father as Nakanaanthan. It further states that Thinnan alias Kannappar was born in Uduppur of Poththappi Nadu. The Poet Kallaadenaar too composed a smaller work also named as "Thirukannappathevar Thirumaram". Both these works describes the the Kannappars devotion towards Kaalaththi temple and the salvation he received from God Siva at this temple shrine.

    (7) The Kannappa Naayanaar as known to the Tamil Saiva Saint Maanikkavaasagar (A.D.285-317)

Saint Maanikkavaasagar (A.D........) of late third Thamil Sangam period in his work has appreciated the grace provided to him by God Siva which was equivalent to that provided by him to the Saint Kannapper.

    Note

From the very fact the Tamil Saiva Maanikkavasakar of the late Third Thamil Sangam period and Poets Nakkirar and Kalladanaar of mid Third Thamil Sangam having referred to Saiva Saint Kannappar establishes the fact that this Saint lived around the mid Thamil Sangam and that the Kaalaththi temple was earlier than the period of mid Thamil Sangam built possibly of brick and mortar.

    (8) Pallava Period of Thondai Nadu of Tamil Nadu (A.D.506-866)

During the period of early sixth century during the rule of Pallava dynasty of Thondai Nadu in north Tamil Nadu, there lived two great Tamil Saiva Saints namely the Thirunaavukkarasa Nayanaar (A.D.568 - 649) and Thirugnaanasampantha Nayanaar (A.D.641 - 657). These two Saints have composed Pathikams (a collection of 10 verses) on many Saiva Shrines in various parts of "then" Tamil Nadu. Likewise they have also sung Tamil Pathikams on "Thirukkaalathi" the 'Vayu Thalam' (Air) of Tamil Nadu.

There are many embossed sculptures of Meenakshi kalyanam, Ganapathi, Murugan, Aalingana Siva, Nanthi, the carving of Spider, elephant and snake worshipping, the minivers Pathanjali and Viyakkrapathar, Nadarajar, the Pichchadanar, the hunter Thinnan (later Kannappar), Thetchanaamoorthy, Machcha avatharam of Vishnu - all on the vertical rock face of the hill in the north of Kalahasti temple, which are of the Pallava style as seen in the Maamallapuram rockface sculptures. These drives us to infer that there had been an earlier brick and mortar temple for Kalaththieswarer which was further adorned by these Pallava Scultures on the rocky face of the hill closer to this temple.

    (9) The early Paandiyar period of Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Saiva Saint Suntharamoorthy Naayanaar of eighth century A.D. has sung a Thevarap pathikam on Kalaththi temple. he has also referred to the Saint Kannappar in his Thiruththondar Pathikam as follows:

".....Kalai malintha seer Nambi Kannapparkk adiyen......."

7th Thirumurai - by Saiva Saint Suntharamoory Naayanaar, pathikam 39

    (10) The Chola period of Tamil Nadu

The Saint Nambiaandar Nambi who initially complied the eleven Thirumurakal has referred to Saint Kannappar in his composition Thiruth Thondar Anthathi as follows:

    "......நிலத்தில் திகழ் திருக்காளத்தியார் திருநெற்றியின் மேல்
    நலத்தில் பொழிதரு கண்ணிற் குருதிகண் டுள் நடுங்கி
    வலத்தில் கடுங்கணை யால்தன் மலர்க்கண் இடந்தப்பினான்
    குலத்திற் கிராதன் நம் கண்ணப்பனாம் என்று கூறுவரே.

11th Thirumurai - Thiruthondar Anthathi, verse on Kannappar

    11th Thirumurai - Paattinaththaar Padalkal, verse 47

The Thirukalahasthi temple during the period of rule of Pallava dynasty in Thondaimandalam region of then Tamil Nadu (which extended upto Venkadam hills in the north) has been constructed with burnt bricks and mortar. It was during the period of Medieval Cholas in Tamil Nadu with the conquer of north Thondaimandalam (the present south Andhra Pradesh of Telugu Chodas), the Kalahasti region of Poththappi Nadu known as "Vayu Thalam" of God Siva was renamed as "Mudikonda Cholapuram".

With the capture of the Seetpuli Nadu, Poththappi Nadu, and Nellore Nadu by Rajaraja Chola - 1 the Kalahasti temple drew much attention and devotion of Rajaraja Chola - 1.................Rajaraja Chola also sent sent a golden diadem to the deity from his capital city the Thanjavur, which was taken with much veneration by his army commander and officials to be adorned on Sri Kalahastiswarar at Kalahasti temple.

It was Rajendra Chola - 1 built the 'new central shrine' of Kalahasthi temple with Karuvarai and Vimanam (spherical shape) facing west, the Muhamandapam the Gopuram smaller than the Vimanam height, and the 'enclosed' Prakara (Thiruchchutru) around the Karuvarai and Muhamandapam. The adajacent Amman Temple with Karuvarai small Vimanam (rectangular shape with four slanting faces) facing east and the Gopuram, next adjacent Nadarajar Temple with Karuvarai with Vimanam (spherical shape) facing west - both having their respective 'enclosed' Pirakaras (Thiruchuttrukal) were built by Kulothunga Chola - 1. The 'outer first open' Pirakaram (Thiruchuttru) Wall encompassing all these Temple Shrines, with interspaced small seated Nandis at the top of the wall all around its perimeter (like in the Thanjaver Rajarajaeswarem temple) complete with the connected western Gopuran known as 'Kulothungan Gopuram' all of granite structure too were built by Kulotunga Chola - 1.

The Karuvarai and Muhamandapam of the Chola period

The inner walls of the Karuvarai contains Inscriptions on all it's four walls entirely in Tamil of the Chola kings Rajaraja Chola - 1, Rajendra Chola - 1, Rajathiraja Chola - 1, Rajendra Chola - 2 and Virarajendra. The Kalahasti temple was located in the north Thondaimandalam region which was known which was known as Jayamkonda Cholamandalam of that period, closer to Venkadam hills (kottam) in the district called Perum Paanappaadi (present Chitoor district) in the Aattrur Nadu (subsequent Pothappi Nadu) of then Tamil Nadu.

The Chola Officer who was entrusted with the task of building this temple on behalf of Rajendra Chola - 1 was one of his military general named Mathuranthaha Maaraayan. He built Karuvarai, Vimanam and the Muhamandapam in front of the temple, and created a Nanthavanam (flower garden) on the west of 'Pon Muhali Aaru' (the present Svarnamuki river) both named after the military general as "Mathuranthaha Maarayan".

Rajendra Chola - 1 (A.D.1011-1044) and many donations to this temple during this period. Along with the bronze statues of deties and others installed at this temple, was an image of one of the queens of Rajaraja Chola - 1 named "Chola Mahadevi" and inscribed on the pedestal of same.

Within the first pirakaaram outer walls of this temple complex are further temples of Amman - with Karuvarai, Vimanam and Gopuram facing east, the Dakshinamoorthy - with Karuvarai, Vimanam and West Gopuram known as Kulothunga Cholan Gopuram, also built by Kulothunga Chola - 1 both being adjacent to Kalahastidevar temple - with Karuvarai,Vimanam and Gopuram, enclosed Pirakaram (Thiruchuttru), built by Rajendra Chola - 1 with all Gopurams facing west.

In the year A.D.1084 of Kulothunga Chola - 1 the people of Kalahasti donated 1786 kuli of land as Madavilagam (fund to construct a Madam) for the residence for the Saivite Sect called Maheswaras of Thiru-Kaalaththi alias Mumudicholapuram.

In the year A.D.1090 of Kulothunga - 1, Aadavallaan Gangaikondan alias Irungolan donated to Kalahasti Temple 128 cows and 384 sheeps to provide ghee to burn 20 lamps from evening to mid-night service in the Mandapam and Verandah (Thiruchuttru Malikai) built by his mother around the temple

In the year A.D.1096 the one of his Army General of Kulothunga Chola - 1 named Senathipathi Raja Narayana Munaiyaadaraiyar dug an Irrigation Tank for the use of irrigating the Paddy Lands belonging to the Kalahasthi temple.

Behind the Kalahasthithevar temple there are two hillocks with the Kannappaeswarer temple and the other the Durga temple. On the way up to Kannappaeswarer temple on the slope of the hillock exists the temple of Manikengaieswarer temple and next to same a Mandapam carved out of the hillock with a flight of steps. The Thiru Manikengaieswarer temple and the Manadapam were built by Virarajendra Chola alias (Parakesari) Kulothunga Chola - 3 in his 11th year of rule.

During the period of the emperor Kulothunga Chola - 1 the mother of an officer of this king built the Thiruchuttru Malikai within the second enclosure and a Mandapam near by including the second enclosure attached to the second big gopuram. There had been a big street around the second Prakara of this temple and was known as Kulothunga Chola Peruntheru.

    (11) Kalahasti under the Local Chieftains during the waning period of Chola dynasty

There are inscriptions that talk about local chieftains who had the title “Yadavaraya” and controlled the area around Sri Kalahasti and called “Sri Kalahasti deva” and were proud that they were devotees of both Sri Venkatachalapathy of Tirumala and Sri Kalahasti Natha.
Threafter King Veeranarasimha Yadavarayar built the present Second Prakara, and the three gopurams connecting the three entrances of this Prahara.

At the rearmost is the Chola style Vimanam built by Rajendra Chola - 1 over the Karuvarai of Kalaththieswarer. In the front before same, is the west Gopuram connecting the first Pirakara outer wall built by Kulothunga Chola - 1. Further before same is the west Gopuram built by Veeranarasimha Yadavarayer the subordinate of Kulothunga Chola - 3 connectiong the outer wall of the second Pirahara.

    (12) Kalahasti during the period of the later Paandiya dynasty

    (13) Kalahasti layout during the period of the Vijayanagara dynasty

The King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara Empire built the tallest Rajagopuram of this temple with seven tiers in A.D.1529 which stands independently and some distant away from the second big gopuram with five tiers which stands on the right of the inward through-way through the Rajagopuram known as the 'Kulothunga Cholan Gopuram'.

The majestic Raja Gopuram built by the Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara empire with seven Tiers and standing independently. The second big Gopuram with five Tiers of the temple connected to the second Pirakara wall was built by Narasimha Yadavaraya the Chieftain of Kalahasti ruling as subordinate under Kulothunga Chola - 3

The Raja Gopuram built by King Krishnadevaraya have no physical direct connection with the main Rajagopuram of the temple and standing independently. This has no physical direct connection with second big Gopuram or the second Pirakara of this temple. This was the very reason the Telugu Inscription of Vijayanagara King - Krishna Devaraya - 2 on his construction of the Rajagopuram had to be inscribed on the outer walls of the second Pirahaara of this temple, instead of the walls of the Rajagopuram itself.

'Kulothunga Cholan Gopuram' with its surrounding walls going around the entire temple complex and known as the second prakaram outer wall. On entering through this Gopuram and turning on to your right there is a pathway to thre shrines namely ............., and the main shrine being the Kalahastieswarer temple. This temple in its entirety was built by the Chola king Rajendra Chola - 1, with a Karuvarai (Sanctum Santorium), Muhamandapam, surrounding first Pirakaram, the outer first Pirakara Wall connected to the four tier Gopuram being the third tallest with four Tiers only. Over the Karuvarai of this temple the Vimanam in the typical Chola style vogue during this period In the first Pirakaram within the Kalahasthidevar temple there are stone images of the 63 - Tamil Saivite Saints of Tamil Nadu and Kerala

King Achutaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire formerly had his coronation in this temple.

[color=olive]"There is a Telugu inscription of Krishnadeva Raya, which clearly states that it was he who built the Rajagopuram of the temple. This lithic record is inscribed on the western wall of the second prakara (corridor) and is dated to Saka year 1438 (that is, 1516 CE). The dhamma sasanam (inscription) talks about how Sri Krishnadeva Maharayalu built the peddha gopuramu (the big tower) for the Lord in “Sri Kalahastiswarani temple.”

    (14) Kalahasti during the period of the British in India

The Kaalahasti temple lost its patrons towards the late eighteenth century. In the early nineteenth century the adverse condtion of the temple drew the attention of the Tamil Ramanaathan Chettiaar and his family from Devakottai in Puthukkotai district in Tamil Nadu. He spent 9 - Lacs of Rupees at that time in the year A.D.1912 and did much renovations to the inner temples (falling within the first Pirakarem) and conducted the Kumba Abishekam (Kuda Mulukku) Vilaa at this temple. The stone image of Ramanathan Chettiaar could be seen on the stairway leading to the Swarnamuki river (Pon Muhali Aaru) under a small structure.

The Nagarathar community (Nattukottai Chettiars) of Devakottai in Tamil Nadu have liberally donated for Sri Kalahastiswara temple’s maintenance.
