Arun Vijay’s Thavam starts promisingly, but peters out into a run-of-the- mill masala movie, with nothing new in it. Vadivel’s sick jokes and Arpitha’s loud acting are major draw backs of this film.
It has a great beginning- a man and a woman meet at a suicide point atop a waterfall. He is unemployed and she is running away from a forced marriage. After a lot of discussion they decide against jumping down the falls as it would be too gory and prefer consuming sleeping pills and having a peaceful death! They pawn the girl’s gold chain and a have a good time before going back to the guy’s room and consuming sleeping pills! Just then the postman knocks and he brings the news that the guy has got a job in a corporate! They raise an alarm and are saved at the nick of time from certain death.

After going their separate ways with their families, the ‘suicide attempt’ couple Subramanian (Arun Vijay) and Sumathi (Vandana) realize that they have fallen in love! Meanwhile Subramanian’s boss’s daughter Madhumita (Arpita) an aggressive woman flips her lid for our hero! Sumathi once again on the run from her Thai Mamman who wants to do a shot- gun wedding , ends up as Madhumita’s secretary! Soon Madhu realizes that the love lorn Subramanian’s girl is Sumathi and tries her best to see that the lovers never meet!

The director Sakthi Parameswar making a remake of a Telugu film loses track and introduces Vadivel’s nauseating comedy track where either he pukes on somebody or gets beaten up! And in between there are loud songs galore with stupid lines like Muck payya…. To be fair to D.Imman (producer Arjun’s favourite), has given a beautiful melody Kannadasa, Kannadasa.., which is the only soothing balm in the film!

The two heroines Vandana and Arpita can’t emote or dance. They need to attend acting schools before they venture out again! Arun Vijay does his role sincerely and we hope that he finds a better script in his next outing as a hero. Arjun who comes in a two-minute cameo as the savior of the lovers has got terrific screen presence, wish there was more of him in the film. Jai Hind!

I saw Thavam. It was very different to begin with. Definitely a refreshing beginning to a tamil movie with both the lovers falling in love when they're both about to die.

It does start to drag unnecessarily towards the second half and the Vadivelu equation is too predictable and repetitive. Nevertheless, he is funny esp the encounters between him and Arun Vijay.

I've always liked Arun Vijay, esp in soft roles like this. This film truly brings out his acting abilities. The girl just came with a sad expression the whole time, but she wasn't bad per say.

Love the song Kannadasa, and the first song fit in nicely with the situation. Worth a watch! Hopefully it turns out to be a fit for Arun Vijay!
