Watched part of Sivandha Mann last night.

I heard it was a BIG-BUDGET, HIGHLY-EXPECTED movie, but flopped at the BO! Personally, I loved that movie, if not for anything, atleast for the grandeur, and for the chemistry bet Sivaji and the pretty Kanchana! :P :P

I guess many of us will agree with the story of Sivantha Man, which is not Sridhar's best.

It's okay for cinema (especially Tamil cinema, even now) to be off the realism mark, but Sivandha Man, in wanting to marry nice commercial genre with serious message-ridden political issue, failed to do so.

What I remember about this movie, is not about the nationalism except for Muthuraman's.

NT's performance is made complex when he was to be a lover boy in one scene and then move on to be patriotic. But not his fault, the script is bad. He could have checked the script with Sridhar, but he being a director's actor, must have just let someone as capable as Sridhar to carry the show on.

Plus, you can see how much NT himself liked Muthuraman's role, so much so, that when it was remade in Hindi, NT did that role.

But there are many good points. Very nice cinematography with great colours. Beautiful song (yes, oru Raja Raniyidam is well shot - for it's time) and interesting fight sequences.

If only Sridhar has got rid of the patriotism angle, we would have got ourselves a fun movie.

But it is not entirely bad. Bad script aside, it is a watchable movie. I'd watch it again and again, for NT may have got lost in the madness of the script, but still delivers the good.

Bayarea, I think the movie was not a flop. If not, why would they want to remake it in Hindi? As usual, the masters will be responding to this.

Forgot to add this. Sivantha Man evolved from Andru Sinthiya Rattam originally written for MGR. I read a bit about it in Sridhar's autobiography, though I can't quite remember what changes he made. But I suppose the overseas love scenes must have come in last minute when he managed to get the budget and schedule.

I think you saw Sivandha Man(n) with pre concieved mind. Though it may not classify as a great epic, definitely it is an enjoyable film which gave importance to entertainement. Don't look for logic. NT with his own hair do and sans make up would have performed spiritedely especially in scenes wher he argues with his father and the other team membes. Of course it goes without saying that MSV did a fabulous job. Just watch it again

Yes. It was a Big budget and highly expected movie but it was not a BO failure. Sridhar did the mistake of releasing it directly thro' his Chitralaya Pictures instead of selling it outright to distributors. So the returns were slow to reach him (unlike today when you release 200 -300 prints and rake in the money). Later when he sold it, the distributors had a nice profit. This was one film which fetched Sridhar good price even in repeated sales (Hope you are aware that outright distribution rights are given for 5 years and afterwards the rights has to be re- bought).

Navaratri combined the story telling skills of filmmaker A. P. Nagarajan and the performances of all-time greats Sivaji Ganesan and Savithri. It was the 100th film of Ganesan, who began his career as a stage artiste at the age of nine. Beginning with Parasakthi in 1952, the actor completed 100 films in a dozen years! BBC News mentioned Navaratri as one of Sivaji Ganesan’s best films in its tribute to the actor, on his death in 2001.

Even today when you talk of Kamal Hassan’s Dasavatharam (now in the making), in which he’s said to be playing ten roles, you cannot but recall Navaratri. None who knows Tamil cinema can forget the grea t actor playing nine very different roles in the film. Every character essayed a rasa (emotion) and the navarasas were embellished to the optimum in Ganesan’s portrayals. The thespian’s imaginative approach to his roles was remarkable. Even now he’s an inspiration to aspiring actors. But where did he find his inspiration?

Remembered for: At a time when playing even three roles in a film was a wonder, you saw an actor handling nine with élan! And each was so different from the other that you almost forgot it was the same man playing all the parts.

ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் என். பாலகிருஷ்ணனின் கைவண்னத்தில் "சிவந்த மண்" படத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு ஃப்ரேமும் கண்ணில் ஒற்றிக்கொள்ளும்படி அமைந்திருக்கும். அதற்கு அருமையான ஆங்கிள்கள் செட் செய்த இயக்குனர் SREEDHAR க்கும் பாராட்டுக்கள். சிவந்த மண் என்றதும் பெரும்பாலோர் வெளிநாட்டில் படமாக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகளையே சொல்வார்கள்.

அந்தப்படத்தின் தோல்விக்கு பெரும் காரணமே "அது வெளிநாட்டில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட படம்" என்ற அளவுக்கு மீறிய, அபரிமிதமான எதிர்பார்ப்புத்தான் என்று சொல்வேன். அப்படி ஒரு பெரிய எதிர்பார்ப்பு இல்லாமல் வந்திருந்தால் அது பெரிய வெற்றியடைந்திருக்கும் என்பது நிச்சயம். இந்தியாவில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகளே அப்படத்தை வெற்றியடைய வைத்திருக்கும்.

2) கிளிமாக்ஸ் காட்சியில் ராணுவ ஜீப்கள் அனிவகுத்து வேகமாகப் பறந்து செல்லும் காட்சியமைப்பில் ஒளிப்பதிவு சூப்பர்.

6) ஒளிந்து வாழும் சிவாஜி, தன் அம்மாவைப்பார்க்க இரவில் வரும்போது, மாளிகையைச்சுற்றி அமைக்கப்பட்டிகும் நைட் எஃபெக்ட் லைட்டிங்.

7) நம்பியாரால் கைது செய்யப்பட்டு, சிறைக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்ட சிவாஜி, ஜெயில் அதிகாரியை பிணையாக வைத்துக்கொண்டு, அத்தனை துப்பாக்கிகளையும் தன் வசப்படுத்தியதோடு, தன் கைவிலங்கை துப்பாக்கி குண்டால் உடைத்துக்கொண்டு தப்பிக்கும் காட்சி.

8) வாகினி ஸ்டுடியோவில் அமைக்கப்பட்ட, சுழன்று சுழன்று தண்ணீர் ஓடும் ஆறு. அதை இரவு வேளையில் காண்பிக்கும் அழகு.

9) அரண்மனை முன்னால் போராட்டம் நடத்த வந்த கூட்டத்தினரை, துப்பாக்கி ஏந்திய குதிரை வீரர்கள் விரட்டியடிக்க மக்கள் சிதறி ஓடும் காட்சி.

thanks mural, there are many sivaji films that i dislike intensely (mostly from 80s) and won't want to remember him from those excuse for films.

let me redeem by watching some good 60s fare over this wknd.
