சட்டியில் இருந்தா தானே ஆபையில வரும்!

I had always thought this to mean only if there is rice in the pot will you get something in the ladle.

But a person I know said its original meaning was


சட்டி = சஷ்டி அதாவது சஷ்டி விரதம்.
ஆபை = கர்பபை

So according to him, the real meaning is

சஷ்டி விரதம் இருந்தால், கர்பம் உன்டாகும்!

Which, among the faithful observers of the sasthi viratham, is a well prevalant belief!

Have any of you have heard of this variant?

LAte Kirupaananthavaariyaar is said to have this interpretation to this proverb. His bakthi for Lord Muruga made him do that, I presume. But my personal impression is that the simple, rustic people who familiarised such proverbs had no such deep thought. They meant practically a ladle can bring out nothing from a container having nothing!
