IMHO, Rafi is beyond words but his voice would not have suited TFM. I thought he did sing a few telugu songs but when i heard them it was not so great. His fort was hindi and north india and he had to be there..
The songs quoted above are well rendered above 100 % by the singers..

Be contended with this atleast because MSV didnt get anything
For Sendhoorappoove (16 vayadhinile ) , SJ got national award I think ( give cr to IR )
For many BGMs , IR deserved national award .
These are funniest things to happen in Indian music industry

Iam astonished to know that MSV did not win any NA!!!
Not even when MGR and Karunanidhi were in their capacity to do so!!!

Not that MSV cares too much about it.We have a funny way of honoring artistes after their lifetime.
The National awards themselves have lost a lot of credibility in the past few years.
I read somewhere that IR had requested to not consider him for awards anymore after a point in time. Not sure if its true, but if so it could partly explain why he didnt win more.

if IR were to have worked with Rafi Saheb, he would have come up with a tune appropriate for Rafi Saheb's voice! I dont think any of the songs mentioned above would have fit the ambience of his voice - perhaps, just perhaps, 'Kanne kalaimane' and 'yeh zindagi gale laga le'!

Yes MSV didn't receive any recognition at all, but he deserved a lot.
Infact he was the pioneer long before IR!
Really ashame for the national,
Even M.Rafi didn't get the recognition he deserved at all!
May be it seems like that Rafi's voice not suits south indian languages. This is because he sang one or two songs in telugu, thats all. and they were not great songs.
The above said IR songs were very well rendered by SPB and KJY. Thats true!
Please visit these links, a surprise

Mohammed Rafi's voice glides along the tune, He sings each and every word with ease, He easily goes to higher octave and comes to mid/lower octave.
I have seen many singers screaming/scratching at high pitches., But Rafi is exception. Even SPB cannot sing comfortably with higher notes!
He has all elements with his voice!
*He has good Bass voice with punch or expression, (only KJY has as well).
*Good at High/mid pitches.(TMS is upto some extent only)
* No nasal voice.(like singing with nose-HH/Unnikrishnan etc).
* True manly (heavenly) voice (SPB/KJY).
*Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice but he had a good voice.
Importantly he did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.

No! If you see early songs of IR(late 1970's) , there were three main influences!
* The melody part was of MSV shades.
* The harmony and orchestrations is of RDB/SDB'ish.
* Singing style were of sometimes M.Rafi's/Kishore's.
Except the folk songs, others were classics which could easily find a place in MSV/SDB rack!
Example songs!
"Uravugal thodarkathai" from Aval appadithaan had lot of MSV influence and Hindi style. But if you notice cleverly, IR's style of guitar and piano elements were fused with the melody of Jeyachandran's vocal.
So Rafi's voice would have well suited for IR , But question is about the actor?
Which actor suits Rafi's vocals? I think nobody

Ilayaraja really wanted to bring back those days in mid 80's also
Example:
"Pon vaanile ezil ven megame" from "Anbin mugavari"(?) 1984/85,
in this song IR tried to bring back past of SDB/MSV to the present. SPB tried to imitate Rafi, but what to say, he failed!
