For the past two days, ever since I read IR honoured with the SDBurman award, I have been
madly running around with SDBurman compositions.
As always, Guru dutt haunts me.... I couldn't snap out of the sparkiling, heart penetrating face of Indian cinema, one of the fine end scene in a GREAT INDIAN CINEMA.
Though I have watched PYAASA several times from 90s, every time, it is haunting.
poem rejects the material world
Powerful picturization!
Wanna celebrate Pyaasa one more time this morning.
ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai .....PYAASA.
yeah... Great Indian Cinema's heartwrenching character Vijay is back! I am so happy when he rejected this fickle minded , materialistic janta, went away with Gulab.
with heart full of admiration to S.D.Burman and his team, I wanna post couple more compositions from Dada Burman.
hum bekhudi main tum ko purakare..... Rafi for Dada Burman.
phaili hui hain.......Lata for SD Burman
Bimol Roy's SUJATA is a masterpiece... Wonderful film, all songs are scintilating from Dada Burman.
Highly recommand the film and the album!
Doordharshan's favorite....rimjhim ke tarane
chand phir nikla.....Lata....Paying Guest.
thandi hawayein lehra ke aayein.....Lata.

Kafi for the weekend !
A song in Kafi from Munimji(1955):
Ghayal hiraniya............
A bhajan by Pandit Jasraj:
Kafi is equivalent to Kharaharpriya in Carnatic system. Here is a rendition by Madurai Mani Iyer.
Chakkani raja.......(Thyagaraja)
part 1.
part 2
part 3
part 4
This song brings back memories of my high school days. I attended a concert by Madurai Mani Iyer when I was in the final year of high school. He was different from other carnatic vocalists and had an inimitable style. I liked his rendition of Thaaye Yasodha , VeLLai thaamarai poovil iruppaaL, Eppo varuvaro and others. Those days I knew only a few carnatic compositions, 'Sakala kala vaNiye' being my favourite, because we sang that in school!
I like Chakkani raja. That is why you see the 40 minute rendition. It is also a favorite of nadhaswaram vidwans.
I wrote an article about how 'eppo varuvaro' was changed to suit the context in a movie in 'thiraiyil ilakkiyam' series!
Have a good weekend and Happy Pongal !

Reality bite! :(
I was browsing youtube for a sad song of the 50s. I came across this song that depicts the state of the current economy in the US and how it affects the lower middle class and the poor. We never had so many requests for contributions to charitable causes as we had last year (2011). It is also the first time grocery stores had bags filled with groceries for custmers to buy and donate to food banks.
O babu O janewale babu ek paisa de.... from Vachan(1955)
The country I came to in 1965 is not there anymore. Greed has taken over!
We do our part contributing about three percent of our annual income to charitable causes. That is my way of saying thanks to the land which gave me the opportunity that did not exist in India when I finished my education in 1968 in the US. A small token!

Bhairavi for the weekend
Bhairavi is the most used raga in Hindi movies:
Here is a song from Awara(1951):
Ghar aayaa mera pardesi.........
Here is a medley of several renditions with a minute or two from each:
The equivalent carnatic raga is Thodi. Whenever thodi is mentioned what comes to my mind is 'thaaye yasodhe' by Oothukkaadu Venkatasubbaiyer. Oothukkadu always brings back my childhood memories because that village is about three miles from my ancestral village! We used to visit that village to have rice hulled!
Here is Madurai Mani Iyer's rendition of 'thaaye yasodhe....'
Have a good weekend!

Muhje jeene do------composer jaidev---sahir lyrics-------sunil dutt----waheeda rehman
Enjoyed muhje jeene do, compositions of Composer Jaidev, Sahir lyrics.
Muhje jeene do by handsome bandit stars Sunil dutt and a beautiful courtesan by Waheeda Rehman.
wonderful movie, love to revisit again. remember watching sometime during late 90s.
raat hain kuchh bheegi bheegi... by Lataji for Composer Jaidev.
Our dashing bandit laid his eyes on the beautiful Waheeda Rehman while she was entertaining in a marriage hall.
Nadi naare na jao.......by Ashaji for Composer Jaidev.
After their marriage, they were running from the police with their men, Waheeda rehman was teasing and begging her handsome hubby.
There is a lullaby by Waheeda rehman with heart ache, singing for her infant, couldn't enjoy his childhood, just wants him to grow up older, fearful of raising him with dangers. Our bandit realizes what kind of a danger he is putting his dear ones with his kind of life and sins, change of heart happens...
beautiful compositions.
Bandit kidnapped the courtesan.
Initially she despised him.
Later he asked her to marry him. She was elated.
now she is out of the indecent and dirty profession.
Every girl dreams of a blissful marriage, she is no exception.
vinatha.

Thanks vinatha for mujhe jeene do and remembering Jaidev ji. Truly marvellous songs. Unfortunately, Jaidev ji did not get the deserved recognition during his life time. Most under-rated composer. It seems only Hum Dono and Mujhe Jeene Do songs were only popular when released. Others are becoming popular only after his time. Here is one of Lata's best song and Jaidev's best composition from film Prem Parbat.

Few more of Jaidev ji's from Gaman (1979)
Ajeeb Saaaneha Mujh par by Hariharan, unbelievable at 1979 itself he was too good, it unfortunate we found him only during 90's.
Seene Me Jalan . A sweet ghazal by Suresh Wadkar. Lyrics-wise also these should be great. We can feel the pain in our heart when listening to this wonderful composition.
Nice to see Bombay during 70s. Great city and great people!
