    Desh for the weekend

I was listening to some carnatic concert clips and to my surprise there was a Tamil composition in Desh, a raga of Hindustani origin. I searched for a Hindi song in Desh and here it is:

kadam chale aage by K.L.Saigal from Bhakta Surdas (1942):

The Tamil song is "thunbam nergaiyil yaazh eduthu nee........" by Bharathidasan. It was M.M.Dandapani Desikar who chose Desh for the song. The appeared in the movie "Or Iravu(1951).

If you like to listen to Desh by several stalwarts here is the link:

Of these stalwarts I had attended concerts by Balamuralikrishna(vocal),S.Balachander(veena), Lalgudi Jayaraman, Ravi Shankar and Allah Rakha. Balachander's concert was during the centenary celebration of my college in 1954.
It was a memorable concert I cherish. He had his own style.

Only Dandapani Desikar used to sing that compostion. Now, many of the current carnatic vocalists sing that composition. What a change in 50 years?

I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year!

I wrote an article about Desh and the Tamil composition:

Adding this link to welcome the New Year:

    Desh by legends:

    (There is some repetition.)

Thank you Raj, for the Desh feast I am running out of adjectives to describe the feelings the video (Desh by Legends - "Baje sargam har taraf se goonj bankar des raag...") evokes! Great collection, skillfully put together by Doordarshan.

By the way, I was not able to read your article on Desh as I do not seem to have the right Tamil font on my computer.

    Happy 2012 to everyone!

    To Hongkong to rock !

From the movie Howrah Bridge (1958):

    Mera naam chin chin chu...........

The tune borrows from western rock music.

This song brings back memories. My son who does not know Hindi decided to play a Hindi song in a function on his violin. He listened to the song and transferred it to staff notation and played it with a friend who was also a violinist. He was about 10 years old at that time! You never know what children are capable of.

Thanks RR. I give the link because the listener can also read the comments by other listeners who give some interesting information and some anecdotes about the movie. Besides, it occupies space. Of course there is the option to watch in 'youtube'. Watching it in youtube allows you to browse other threads while listening to the song. I am glad you liked the songs. They take me back to my college days!

Brindavani Sarang (Brindavana Saranga) for the weekend

A song in Brindavana Saranga from Rani Rupmati. The first part(male singing) is in Darbari Kanada and the second part is in Brindavana Saranga, a great combination:

ud ja bhanwar maaya and aaja bhanwar suni....

If you like a classical rendition, here is Bhimsen Joshi:

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Bismillaah Khan and others have also rendered in this raga.

In carnatic music Rangapura Vihara by Muthuswami Dikshithar and Kaliyuga varadan by Periyasami Thooran are the most popular compositions. Kaliyuga varadan seems to have become popular these days, a welcome change!

    Have a good weekend!

    Yahoo! Chaahe koi mujhe junglee...........

A lilt from Junglee(1961). The movie was popular with Shammi Kapoor and Saira Bhanu in the lead.

Yahoo! Chaahe koi mujhe junglee kaa............

I posted this song because of something I recalled. It was September 1965. I was on my first flight (of my life) from Madras to Bombay on my way to New York and Chicago. After I took my seat a gentleman came and sat next to me and introduced himself as Shammi Kapoor and I introduced myself. That was all. I was keen on what the hostess was saying. After I got off in Bombay, a friend came to me and said that I was sitting next to a Hindi movie actor. Had I known that I would have asked him to autograph my ticket! Next time I met an actor in 1973 or 74 I got an autograph. He was none other than MGR who later became chief minister of Tamilnadu!

Shammi Kapoor is gone! May his soul rest in peace.
