    TELEFILMS-PREMIERE SHOW

Doordarshan Kendra Thiruvananthapuram as a part of the series Kathasaritha has organized a premiere show of telefilms at Kalabhavan Theatre on 20TH of this month.
Kathasaritha is a literary odyssey based on fictions authored by Indian writers. There are committees in the regional and national levels to select the stories, of reputed authors. The film initially is produced in the base language. Then it is dubbed or subtitled to all other Indian languages. The regional kendras of Doordarshan, telecast these stories at the prime time. This enables the viewers to familiarize with the stories of other Indian languages. The telecast of current package would begin by October. Getting a sponsor for this standard program is a big problem, as tearjerker, are still in great demand. Still, it seems DDK has decided to forego anything, for its telecast. In the next package Adoor Gopalakrishnan would direct selected ten short stories of Takazhi, and Sivan would serialize the works of Prof. C P Sivadas, literacy expert.

In the current package Makal (Rajalekshmi), Moonnamathoraal(Mundoor Krishanankutti), Mothiram(Karur neelakanta Pillai), Koorakal(E.Harikumar), Shakunam(Kovilan) and Bharthavu(Ponkunnam Varkey).
    G R Kannan, P J Radhakrishnan, MA Dilep, K.Jyothishkumar, Baijuchandran and K T Sivanandan, direct these films.
The selected works are notable for delicate characters like Makal for instance. Sarada the eldest and the only earning member of a family of seven, fall in love. She rejects the proposal from his father’s nephew. When her lover insists for a immediate marriage, she put forth her priorities, in which the education of the younger ones ranks high. When the lover refuses to wait for long, she commits suicide.
In Mothiram, there is an imbued sense of Fantasy. Kunchu Nair and Kunhikkavu, now in the sixties, realize that they were in love in their youths without revealing their ambition. They now get opportunities to meet frequently, but nobody suspects their relationship. Kunvhu Nair one day presents her a ring. Soon he dies of heart attack. After cremation, his children search for the ring, but to no avail. However, they never suspects Kunhikavu.

Moonamathoral relies on subtle evocation of atmosphere than on plot. Krishnankutti with his son is on his way to his wife’s house for attending her death anniversary. Sudden death of his wife haunts him and he feels her invisible warmth. He recollects her love and understanding of family life. It heightens his sorrow that creates awe in the child.

THE story, Koorakal happens in Calcutta. The woman narrator with her husband and children live in a flat. She suddenly sees swarm of cockroaches in her flat. While purchasing poison for the insects she remembers her appointment with a doctor. Against her wish, she receives an injection. ON their way back, the husband talks about his plans for the children. Back home she feels sick but consoles for succumbing to abortion. The story clearly reveals the approach of gender towards abortion.

Sakunam is a portrayal of the amazing complexities of human mind. The schoolteacher on his way to the hospital for his son’s major surgery recalls how he gathered money, the sufferings of his terminally ill son, and the desire of her daughter to posses a white churidar.
The young couple inside the bus was sharing sweet nothings. Suddenly he wakens as a gathering crowd distracted him. He sees the dead body of the woman in the lap of wailing lover. Though it is tragic event, he finds a positive point-“dead body is an ideal omen” and hopes his son will recover soon.
    Bharthavu

This is the story of a lazy young man much pampered by his mother and sister. The unemployed son get married to an employed woman and soon difference of opinions emerges. The daughter in law leaves the house. The mother falls sick. The son manages to procure money from her wife. The mother refuses to accept it and advises him to earn for himself. Thus, the son leaves in search of a job, finds one but could return only after her mother’s demise- a heavy price he had to pay to learn the dignity of labor.
