AVM and grandeur always went together. A touch of class and clarity has been synonymous with their production in the 60-year period. Getting back to its roots after diverting the attention in the small screen, the famed production house has meant business.

Led by M Saravanan and his son M S Guhan, AVM is churning out big ones starring Rajnikanth and Ajith. In its diamond jubilee year, there is the added incentive to give a special coating and satiate the appetite of Rajnikanth and Ajith fans.

Heaping praise on Guhan, Saravanan says, 'All credit to him for the studious ways of his planning and putting that to effect. Some bold decisions are to be welcomed. A blend of youth and experience is how will put it, of our efforts in conceiving the projects (Rajnikanth starrer Sivaji and Ajith's Thirupathi).

Taking some time from his busy schedule, Saravanan, who has worked with three generations of artistes, spoke to News Today about their forthcoming venture and also the present state of Tamil film industry.

Q: Your feelings on the two big projects simultaneously?

A: There is no great excitement. As a producer, the onus is on me to make them count. It's fine to take the mantle with a talented cast and crew.

Everything is big of them and so should be the results.

Q: On choosing Ajith for Tirupathi?

A: We were planning to do a movie with Ajith long back. Due to unfortunate circumstances, it got shelved. Happy that finally we managed to cast Ajith in our home production. Director Perarasu deserves a special mention in understanding the travails of the producers. Bharadwaj's songs have come good. It's planned for a Tamil New Year Day release.

    Q: How did Sivaji happen?

A: It was Guhan's brainwave. Wth two big names, the platform could not have been bigger. The mantra, as always, been to put in the best efforts and leave the result to the fans. All I can say is that it is shaping up well, catering to the taste of all sections.

Q: Being a veteran in the industry, your advice for the emerging talents and the producers?

A: Producers should understand the current trend of the industry and do movies accordingly. Actors and actresses, no matter how popular they are, have to be flexible in their remuneration.

Q: Do you think the industry is healthy today?

A: Certainly. If you render a movie which is liked by the masses, the battle is more or less won. Chithiram Pesuthadi is a pointer to it. Good movies do have a place at the box-office.

    Perarasu on Tirupathi

    Shobha Warrier | December 07, 2005

If we go by the way Tamil audiences patronise films, Perarasu seems well on his way to a hat-trick.

A little rewind will tell you that, of the much talked about fight between Vijay and Vikram at the box office during Diwali, Vijay came out a clear winner thanks to Sivakasi. The actor definitely has to thank the filmmaker, Perarasu, for this and his earlier success, Thirupachi. Perarasu stuck strictly to a formula that would attract Vijay's fans and satisfy them. He added all the masala essential for commercial success, and managed to win over audiences.

Now, he has moved on to his next project, for the prestigious AVM Productions. Following a tradition started by him, he has given the name of a place to his third film as well -- Tirupathi. Its hero is the handsome Ajith, who has shed around 14 kilos and is badly in need of a hit. The heroine is Sada, who is on a high after the success of Anniyan.

We managed a chat with Perarasu and got him to speak about his latest project.

    Your Say: Fave action flick?

How did the offer for Tirupathi come about?

What can I say except that it all happened because of the blessings of God! It was while I was shooting for Sivakasi that I was told Saravanan Sir of AVM wanted to meet me. Not even in my wildest dreams did I think he was going to offer me a film. When he did ask me to make a film for his banner, I couldn't believe my ears. I had only made one film and I hadn't even finished the second one, and here, one of the oldest and most prestigious banners was offering me a third! He also told me the hero was Ajith.

    What did you tell him?

I didn't even have to think twice before accepting the offer. I immediately told him a story line I had in mind. As I have said in an earlier interview, I always have a stock of stories with me.

You specialise in 'sentiments'. In this story, what is the sentiment you are going to stress upon?

In Tirupathi, it is friendship, between the good and bad. Riaz Khan will play the negative character. When I narrated the storyline to Saravanan Sir, he liked it very much. They announced the film within two days.

Why do you give names of places as titles for your films?

I gave the name Thirupachi to my character in my first film, and it became a success. So, I decided to have the name of a place for my next character too. It was just to arouse the curiosity of the audience. Sivakasi also became a hit. It made sense to name my third hero after a place too, hence, Tirupathi.

Will the story of Tirupathi take place in Tirupathi?

No. It is just the name of the hero. The film will have all the sentiments that will appeal to those who live in Tamil Nadu, especially in the rural areas. I am confident it will be liked by those who live in the cities as well. After all, human emotions are the same everywhere.

    Director Perarasu

    Behindwoods
    September 21, 2005
Interview Of Director Perarasu by T.Muthukumar behindwoods correspondent

Q: What according to you is the essential quality in an action film?

Perarasu: Action does not mean fights alone. All fights are not action sequences. There are several films where fights have been minimal, yet the impact huge. This is due to the power in the action. Nayakan, for example. In Tiruppachi, there are not many fights except in the climax.

    View Video

Q: What is the emotional relationship with the viewers in the case of action films?

Perarasu: See, an action sequence becomes successful only if the audience can be convinced. It has to create a huge outcry against the villain and goad the hero to strike. Without creating this emotional upheaval, action reduces to mere violence.

Q: Tiruppachi showed the brother-sister sentiment. What about Sivakasi?

Perarasu: It is also a family entertainer, but the canvas is vast.

Q: What special characteristics have you added to Vijay’s role?

Perarasu: The greatest factor has been the hitherto unseen aspect of Vijay’s talent for comedy.

Q: Who are the collaborators with Vijay in the comedy track?
Perarasu: No big names, Benjamin and Chittibabu to mention some. Vijay has performed better than in Tiruppachi.

Q: Will Tirupathi form a new chapter in your career? Why do you choose only names of places as titles?

Perarasu: I knew within two months of starting work on Tiruppachi that it would be a hit. Similarly, when I asked Vijay, he agreed for Sivakasi and it is shaping up well. I am very sure that it would also be a big hit. As I feel sentimental about this trend, I am going places.

Q: Tell us how you landed the Tirupathi assignment?

Perarasu: I was in Karaikudi shooting for Sivakasi when I received the call from AVM. I met Saravanan sir after a week and did not imagine that I would be asked to direct a film. Saravanan sir said that AVM wanted me to be the director of their next film. Ajith would be the hero. I readily agreed. I told them a simple story which appealed to all. Ajith was only too happy and offered full cooperation.

    Q: Is the script ready?

Perarasu: Sivakasi developed during Tiruppachi. Tirupathi is shaping up during Sivakasi. I always work on my next project with the current one..

Q: What is special about Tirupathi?

Perarasu: Tirupachi was about sisterly affection and Sivakasi deals with mother’s affection. Tirupathi will be the lexicon for friendship.

Q: When will shooting start for Tiruapthi? Who is the heroine?

Perarasu: December 1. Sadha is the heroine.

Q: You are such a soft-spoken person. You belie the image of your films which have so much spice.

Perarasu: My experience of 15 to 16 years in the industry has taught me to analyze the pulse of the audience. I give them what they want.

Q: You trained under Rama. Narayanan. But your films do not show his influence.

Perarasu: When you are an apprentice, you can pick up the skills. You cannot acquire creativity. I honed my skills under Rama. Narayanan.

Q: What was Vijay’s response to the announcement of Tirupathi with Ajith?

Perarasu: Vijay congratulated me and wished me good luck. On Tiruppachi launch, Ajith was away in Kumbakonam and wished me over phone. It is only the outsiders who think that Vijay and Ajith are at loggerheads. They are the best of friends as far as I know.

Q: The industry is still not convinced about your consistency.

Perarasu: I fully agree. Your first film is only a start and you have a long journey ahead. I am sure that my journey will take me to the summit and make my films popular amongst the audience. I thank behindwoods, for the chance to let me voice my views.

    Director Perarasu's name game
    IndiaGlitz [Friday, December 09, 2005]

After giving two huge box-office hits, "Thirupachi" and "Sivakasi", director Perarasu is on his way to a hat trick. He launched his new film "Tirupathi" with Ajith.

While shooting for "Sivakasi" he got a call from one of the most prestigious and oldest banners in Tamil Nadu, AVM Productions. Saravanan of AVM wanted to meet him.

"As the shooting of "Sivakasi" was still going on, not even in my wildest dreams did I think he was going to offer me a film."

But Saravanan had other ideas. The moment he saw the director, he asked, will you do a film for us?

He says: "I couldn't believe my ears."

He accepted the offer instantly. He was then told that the hero was Ajith.

The well-known rivalry between Vijay and Ajith does not bother him a bit, because he has worked with both of them. He did two films with Vijay and one with Ajith.

He specialises in 'sentiments' though both his films had large doses of action, dance and all the 'masala' essential for a commercial film.

If "Thirupachi" was about brother-sister sentiments, "Sivakasi" was about mother-son bonding.

Now, "Tirupathi" is about the sentiments of two friends - one is good and other is evil. Ajith plays the good friend and Riaz Khan is the evil one.

Sada will play the female lead in the film.

About giving names of places as titles of films, he said that he just named the hero of his first film Thirupachi and the film became a huge commercial hit.

So he decided to repeat it in his next film "Sivakasi" - only hit among the Diwali releases.

"Now that I have started a new trend, I have to give the name of a place to my third hero also", says the director.

But the story of the film does not take place in Thirupathi.

"The film's sentiments will appeal to all those who live in Tamil Nadu."
