Just as beauty of paintings and sculptures are in the eye of the beholder, we firmly believe that a rAgam is a collection of sounds and sound sequences which is enjoyed and experienced differently by each individual listener. Each listener is interested in different aspects of a rAgam or songs in the rAgam. We believe that many rAgams' personality (also known as svarUpam or bhAvam) cannot be described sufficiently in a scientific, notational or even detail descriptive manner, just like art cannot be completely described in words.

Here we try to describe various aspects that guide us towards the personality of a rAgam.

Saurashtra is a Sampurna raga, sung at all times (Sarva-kalika)

rathi: Each of the nine (or ten) rasas is associated with one or more ragas. That can be used to decide the appropriate situation. For example, ataanaa is associated with anger or valour (kobam or veeram). I remember posting about ragas and rasas sometime back.

Saurashtra is a Sampurna raga, sung at all times (Sarva-kalika)
Quoting Subbarama Dikshitar from the Sangita Sampradaya Pradarsini (SSP)

    Lakshana Sloka:
    Saurashtra ragah sampurnah sagrahah sarvakalikah
Pancha srutir dhaivatastu kvachit sthane prayujyate

In the usage “dhaivatastu” the suffix ’‘tu” indicates that kaisiki nishadam is also present.

    Murchana:
    Arohanam: s r g m p d n s
    Avarohanam: s n d p m g r s

    Janya of Mayamalavagaula

    Lakshana Details
Bhashangam, Sampurnam, Shadja Graham, Rakti Ragam
Suitable for singing at all times
The use of Panchasruti Dhaivatam and Kaisiki nishadam is see in some regions

.. and goes on to explain the jIva svara sancharams & prayohams
