    Where is heaven?

    The Tamils used to refer to heaven as "swargam" or "sivanulaku", the abode of Sivan, the supreme God and embodiment of righteousness.

    Where is sivanulaku or swargam? Where there is Tamiz, that place is swargam, says perumpulavar Paranjothi Munivar. Let's enjoy his poem from ThiruviLaiyadal PuraaNam, (83).

    "blow blow thou winter wind" (Shakespeare) transla

    Shakespeare touches on Nature in his plays. But there is difference between his treatment of Nature and those of the other poets like Shelley.. A stanza from AS YOU LIKE IT is rendered in Tamiz as follows:

    viisuka viisuga

    À¡Î - þÉ¢ô À¡Î!

    The original version runs as follows:

    Blow blow thou winter wind
    Thou art not so unkind
    As man's ingratitude;
    Thy tooth is not so keen,
    Because thou art not seen,
    Although thy breath be rude,
    Heigh ho sing heigh ho
    unto the green holly!
    Most friendshp is feighning;
    most loving mere folly;
    Then heigh ho the holly!
    This life is most jolly.

    Now to the original:

    A widow bird sate mourning for her love
    Upon a wintry bough;
    The frozen wind crept on above
    The freezing stream below.

    There was no leaf upon the forest bare
    No flower upon the ground;
    And little motion in the air
    Except the mill-wheel's sound. - Shelley

    Summer (Christina Rosetti) translation

    Christina Rosetti was also a nature poet, who wrote lovely poems in English. She lived from 1830 to 1894. I would now render in Tamil two of her stanzas on Summer and submit for your enjoyment.

    Now, let us look at the original English version:
    CHRISTINA ROSETTI's SUMMER. She was an accomplished poetess.
    Her words are simple, straightforward and striking right on point.

    Winter is cold-hearted,
    Spring is yea and nay,
    Autumn is a weathercock
    Blown every way
    Summer days for me
    When every leaf is on the tree;

    When Robin's not a beggar
    And Jenny Wren's a bride;
    Larks singing, singing singing,
    Over the wheat fields wide,
    and anchored lilies ride
    And the pendulum spider
    Swings from side to side!!

    chennenji - robin; nilvaali - wren (birds).
