alwarpet,
don't you think the classification of music into different categories is arbitrary. At least that is how i feel. does "in the end" by linkin park come under progressive rock?

Not necessarily arbitrary.
Progressive rock is characterized by the unconventional pace in which the song moves.
1) There is no (mostly) rigid/uniform structure as against conventional music, rock or otherwise
2) Prolongued instrumentation, with elongated solo performances, with relatively less lyrics
3) Marked by change(s) of pace within the song
As for Linkin Park, "In the end" is definitely not progressive rock.
