As I mentioned before, Thookku Thookki's "Sundari Soundhari" is one of my favorites. P.Leela's voice (Thanks Sathiya Keerthi!) has a layam and izhaivu in this song that is mesmerizing.

MandhiriKumari's "Ulavum thenral kaatrinilae" was sung by K.R.Ramaswamy and Leela(?) As per my Mom's account, that is the scene where the husband is planning to push his wife into the river from the boat: the wife's words are innocent but the husband's words have an underlying meaning in this duet. KRR's voice, the flowing tune and the lyrics capture the essence of the scene very well. (I have never seen this movie which is an adaptation of the Perumkaappiam Gundalakaeshi.)

Also, KRR has a song "Ennai thaedaadhae enru solludhae, enna sonnaalum kann thaedudhae". Is that one of GR's creations?

I'm looking forward to Rajaraman's account in the pre-TKR/MSV thread.

Is "vElaikkaari" (CNA's sotry/dialogues) by GR?? There are good songs in that film too. I remember KRR's "innamum paaraa mugam Enammaa.."

    Kanchana:

    Two clarifications on MandhiriKumari:

    1. The song you are referring to, in which the
villain invites his wife (Mandhiri Kumari) to
a cliff to push her down (but ultimately she pushes him
down), is "vaaraay nee vaaraay, pOgum idam vegu
dhooramillai, nee vaaraay" and not "ulavum thendral
kaatrinilE" (which is from the same movie).

    2. I think the singer in both the songs is
    Thiruchi Lokanathan.

    Rajaraman

I was told by somebody that the last portion of the song 'maasilaa nilavE nam' (ambikaapathi) is based on mukaari. The piece goes like

    vENugaanam thenralOdu sErntha pinnaalE

Why didn't anybody mention about 'manam kanintharuL vElmurugaa' from vee.paa.ka.bomman. It is another classical example of kurinji, following the lines of 'sundhari sowndhari'.

    Sathiya Keerthi:
Thanks for re-educating me. When I 'phone my parents in India next time, I'll bring up the MandhiriKumari details and correct their perceptions.

    Kanchana & Sathiya Keerthi,

Both situations are true. In one movie
pushing from the cliff which keerthi is
correct, in another movie there is a seen
pushing from the boat, but I not sure of the
    song & movie ?

    Bhaskar:

Are you referring to the song from ThenNilavu, in
which Nambiar pushes his wife from a boat in
the middle of Kashmir lake? That song is:
oorengum thEdinEn oruvarai kaNdEn. It is a
nice song by Jikki; it starts slowly, but
builds up momentum and ends-up with a very
serious isai. The MD for that movie is AMRaja.

KappalOttiya Thamizhan is by GR. The tune for "kaatru veLiyidai kaNNammaa" is a lovely one.
I am sure it is based on some raaga.
Especially I like the part in which PBS sings

    endhan vaayinilE amudhooruthE
    KaNNammaa endra pEr sollum pOdhilE

and, when he repeats, the lines are interchanged.
