National Film Awards – Misses and Wins

    http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle5919756.ece

It’s very heartening to hear that Balu Mahendra’s last film won the award for Best Film for National Integration. It was predicted that Balu’s movie would bag few awards. Tamil films bagged five awards including Best Lyrics for Na. Muthukumar. At the same time, I am disappointed that Maestro wasn’t awarded the Best Background Score for Onnayum A. Shantanu Moitra bagged the Best Background score for the Telugu film “Na Bangaaru Talli”. Shantanu’s earlier soundtrack for Hindi films like Parineeta and Eklavya were good. I haven’t watched the Bangla or Telugu film to comment on the music score. Shantanu did a good job of background score for Madras Café but Raaja’s OA score was superb. If anyone has watched these movies, please post your comments on the music score.

The Bangla film “Jaatishwar” bagged the music awards. Veteran singer and composer Kabir Suman, also very popular among the Bangladeshis, bagged the award for Best Music Direction for Jaatishwar. The film also won the awards for Best Playback Singer Male (Rupankar), Best Costume and Best Makeup. The Best Female Playback singer was bagged by Bela Shende for a Marathi film. Bela has sung many Tamil songs.

Once again, the Film Awards committee doesn’t publish the full results. We want to know which films were nominated and the scoring results for each category. Someone should file a RTI to publish the full set of results. As you all know, the biggest irony was “Sree Rama Rajyam” missing the award for best musical score two years ago because the preview theater had a bad audio system.

Any body heard about this? I neither understand this nor I understand the relevance 23 years later.

Siva - Nothing surprising here but the news item has no relevance now. Lot of water has flowed under the bridge since 1992. What if Raaja didn't have a fallout with Balachander and Ratnam in 1992? KB has nicely patched with Maestro since both of them have realized that waging a war is self-destructive. Bharathiraja can vouch for it after twenty years. Balachander was one of the prime motivators to go out and look for a new MD in 1992.

Interesting to note Gulzar mentioning IR in his dadasaheb phalke award acceptance speech although he has worked with IR only in a couple (exactly 2? (SADMA & SRK)) of movies. Such was the admiration/impact, I guess.

Wish Balki had thought about Gulzar for lyrics for his new movie with IR.

    thanks,

    Krishnan

"He mentioned R D Burman, Madan Mohan and Illayaraja as some of his contemporaries who influenced his work.". Well said, Krish. It was indeed quite grateful for Gulzar to say that. We have quite a few ungrateful people in Tamil film who consider Ilayaraaja as being irrelevant. They have to just look back at their own career and see how Raaja's music influence played a big role in boosting the collections of hundreds of mediocre and lousy movies. Music listeners still croon the tunes not knowing the movie name. We have many rare musical gems from movies which have flopped commercially even though they had star directors and cast. The producers were able to recoup some of their investment from Raaja's music rights because the soundtrack was a platinum hit. In fact, artists in other languages respect and value Maestro's skills more than our own.

What puts me off is that in the same vein, he also praises contemporaries such as "A.R.Rahman"!
