Karthik Subbaraj’s Iraivi follows his two earlier films, Jigarthanda and Pizza, where I saw a strong Quentin Tarantino streak of dark humour and violence at play. In his latest multi-starrer outing, he scripts a story of male arrogance -- all sozzled up in wine and women. Mercifully, the violence here is more subdued, though the deeds are soaked in blood, provoked by uncontrollable anger.

The provocation for this is the refusal of a producer to release a movie helmed by Arul (SJ Surya). After several arguments and fights, he and his brother, Jagan (Bobby Simha), as well as their childhood friend, Michael (Vijay Sethupathi), plan to rob a temple statue in order to pay off the producer, and get the film. But Arul’s perennial drunken bouts come in the way of a settlement that will see the movie’s theatrical release.

In a series of strange twists and turns in the plot, drawing us deeper into a messy dark tunnel, the three men destroy one another, and in the process, Michael demolishes the dreams of his young wife, Ponni (Anjali), and their daughter, while Arul ruins his own marital bliss. His wife, essayed by Kamalinee Mukherjee, finally calls it quits.

Iraivi in the end seems like a story gone astray, the lives of several people destroyed by male egoistic rage that seeks solution in blood and gore. There is very little to cheer (the bottles of liquor merely adding to the depression) in the 160-minute work, which, though has some interesting performances by Simha, Surya and Anjali. Sethupathi continues to mumble much in the same way the Hollywood icon, Marlon Brando, once did, and with a music score that refused to remain in the background, it was often a strain to catch what was being spoken on the screen. The noise of rain in several scenes merely added to my discomfort.

Director Karthik Subbaraj is back with a film in 2016 after his superhits Pizza and Jigarthanda. Iraivi released on Friday in theatres and the director sent out a note requesting the media not to reveal details of the film in their reviews. Karthik Subbaraj has always come up with unique films and Iraivi (Goddess) seems to be a must-watch film as well.

Here are five reasons why you should watch Iraivi:

Karthik Subbaraj - As a director, he has given new themes and new genres - dark humour - to the audience. Subbaraj has moved away from the usual commercial formula of two songs, three fights and one romantic scene, and has touched a chord with the audience. His films are gritty, realistic and there are no larger-than-life heroes to worship (for a change). The director is more comfortable making small films and he seems to have mastered the art as well.

The combo of SJ Suryah, Bobby Simha and Vijay Sethupathi - Bobby Simha and Vijay Sethupathi have already acted in Subbaraj's films and in this film they are joined by director-turned-actor SJ Suryah. This makes for an interesting combination as the trailer shows them as three ordinary guys who seem to be friends in the film. All three of them have proved their acting prowess and in this film, they are likely to have roles that will impress the audience - once again.

Iraivi revolves around women - This time Subbaraj has explored the theme of women for his film. Iraivi means Goddess and he focuses on three women from different backgrounds. The movie talks about women's freedom and how irrespective of their class or background, some things are the same for women.

Santhosh Narayanan - Music director Santhosh Narayanan has worked with Subbaraj in all his films and delivered hits. This movie too will see some wonderful music from Narayanan which will be one of the highlights for sure.

The three women - Anjali, Kamalinee Mukherjee and Pooja Devariya play the three women in this film. None of them have revealed details about their roles but they are seen to be paired up with each of the heroes as seen from the trailer. Since the movie revolves around them, it will be interesting to see them in these performance-oriented roles.

அக்ஷய் குமார் நடித்துள்ள இந்த இந்திப் படம் சென்ற வாரம் வெளியானது. முதல் மூன்று தினங்களில் சென்னையில் இப்படம் 26.30 லட்சங்களை வசூலித்து நான்காவது இடத்தை பிடித்துள்ளது.

3. வேலைன்னு வந்தா வெள்ளக்காரன்
எழிலின் இந்தப் படம் சென்ற வாரம் வெளியானது. விஷ்ணு, நிக்கி கல்ராணி நடித்த படம். சென்னையில் முதல் மூன்று தினங்களில் 49.80 லட்சங்களை வசூலித்துள்ளது.

2. இது நம்ம ஆளு
சிம்பு, நயன்தாரா நடித்துள்ள இது நம்ம ஆளு சென்ற வார இறுதியில் சென்னையில் 54.38 லட்சங்களை வசூலித்து இரண்டாவது இடத்தில் உள்ளது. கடந்த ஞாயிறுவரை இதன் சென்னை வசூல் 2.49 கோடிகள்.

கார்த்திக் சுப்பாராஜ் இயக்கத்தில் வெளிவந்திருக்கும் இறைவி இருவிதமான விமர்சனங்களை பெற்றுள்ளது. சென்ற வாரம் வெளியான இப்படம் சென்னையில் முதல் மூன்று தினங்களில் 78.50 லட்சங்களை வசூலித்துள்ளது.

கார்த்திக் சுப்பாராஜ் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியாகியிருக்கும் இறைவி திரைப்படம் இரண்டு விதமான விமர்சனங்களை எதிர்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. தயாரிப்பாளர்களை தவறாக சித்தரித்துள்ளார் என்று கடும் எதிர்ப்புகள் கிளம்பின. இதில் திடீர் திருப்பமாக இறைவி தயாரிப்பாளர்களில் ஒருவரான ஞானவேல்ராஜாவே கார்த்திக் சுப்பாராஜுக்கு எதிராக நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.

இந்நிலையில் கார்த்திக் சுப்பராஜ் தயாரிப்பாளர்களை மிகவும் அவமதித்திருப்பது அப்பட்டமாகத் தெரிகிறது. இனி அவருக்கு தயாரிப்பாளர் சங்கம் ஒத்துழைக்காது. எந்தத் தயாரிப்பாளரும் அவரை வைத்துப் படம் இயக்கக் கூடாது. அவர் மன்னிப்பு கேட்டாலும் கூட இந்த தடையை விலக்கும் யோசனை இல்லை என்று தயாரிப்பாளர்கள சங்கத்தில் தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டதாக கூறப்படுகிறது.
