விசுவாசத்திற்காக உணர்ச்சிவசப்பட்டு பொங்குகிற கேரக்டரில் சரிவரப் பொருந்தியிருக்கிறார் விஜய்சேதுபதி. வழக்கம் போலவே அவர் டயலாக் மாடுலேஷனும் கைகொடுத்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால், இனி வேறுபாடு காண்பிக்க வேண்டிய நேரம் வந்துவிட்டது விஜய்சேதுபதிக்கு. பாபிசிம்ஹாவைப் பார்க்க மனமின்றி ஒதுங்கிச் செல்லும் காட்சியில் - வெரிகுட் வாங்குகிறார்.

கமலினி முகர்ஜி, அஞ்சலி இருவரது நடிப்பும் மிகச்சரியாக அவர்கள் கதாபாத்திரத்தைப் பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. ஒரு பெண்ணுக்காக எதையும் செய்யத் துணியும் பாபிசிம்ஹா, சில காட்சிகளே வந்தாலும் கெத்து காட்டியிருக்கும் பூஜா தேவரியா, ராதாரவி, கருணாகரன் என்று ஒவ்வொரு கேரக்டர் தேர்வும் அதன் நடிப்பில் அவர்கள் பொருந்திய விதமும் சிறப்பு.

ஆனாலும், ஒவ்வொரு கதாபாத்திரத்தையும் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி கதைக்குள் நாம் வருவதற்கே சில நிமிடங்கள் ஆகிவிடுகிறது. விஜய் சேதுபதியின் சித்தப்பாவுக்கும், பூஜா தேவரியாவுக்குமான பெண் கேட்டுச் செல்லும்போது நடக்கும் உரையாடல் காட்சி உட்பட சில காட்சிகளில்,’அட, செம..’ என்று நினைத்து சீட்டின் நுனியில் அமரும் போதெல்லாம், அடுத்த காட்சி சூடுபிடிக்க மறுக்கிறது. குடி, சிற்பம், சினிமா, குடும்பம், போதை மறுவாழ்வு மையம் என்று காட்சிகள் தனித்தனியாக கைதட்ட வைத்தாலும், அதைக் கோர்வையாக்குவதில் கொஞ்சம் தடுமாறியிருப்பது தெரிகிறது.

படத்தில் வரும் சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் பாடல்கள் சில என்றாலும், படம் ஆரம்பிக்கும்போது ‘தானத்தந்தந்த’ என்று தென்றல் வந்து-வில் ஆரம்பித்து இளையராஜாவின் பாடல்கள் பத்து இருக்கலாம். சந்தோஷின் பின்னணி இசையுடன் கைகோர்த்துப் பயணிக்கிறது ராஜாவின் பாடல்கள்.

க்ளைமேக்ஸில் படம் முடியும் என்று பார்த்தால், மீண்டும் படம் ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. ‘படம் முடிஞ்சுடுச்சே’ என்று நினைக்க வைக்கிற இடங்கள் ஒன்றிரண்டு வருகிறது. க்ளைமாக்ஸ் இப்படி என்கிற பட்சத்தில் படத்தில் கொஞ்சம் கத்திரி வைத்திருக்கலாம். ’பாடினாலே இப்பலாம் ஆர்ட் இல்ல.. கமர்ஷியல்ங்கறாங்க’ என்று படத்தில் அவர்களே சொன்னபடி, வலிந்து திணிக்கப்பட்ட பாடல்களைக் குறைத்திருக்கலாம். ஆரம்ப பாபி சிம்ஹா, காலேஜ் குழுவினர் இழுவை ஃபைட்டைத் தூக்கியிருக்கலாம். இப்படி..

வசனங்கள் - நிச்சயம் குறிப்பிடவேண்டியதாகிறது. ‘கருவுல இருக்கற குழந்தையை தள்ளி வெச்சுட்டு இன்னொரு குழந்தை பெத்துக்குவியா?’ என்று படைப்பாளியின் வேதனையை, ‘எனக்கு ஒரு குழந்தை இருக்கு. ஆனா யாரும் என்கிட்ட லவ்வை சொன்னதில்ல’ என்று திருமணமான பெண்ணின் மன உணர்வை, ‘பொறுத்துக்கறதுக்கும்.. சகிச்சுக்கறதுக்கும் நாம என்ன பொம்பளையா... ஆம்பளை” என்று ஆணாதிக்கத்தை குத்திக் கிழிக்கும் வசனங்கள் இப்படி பல.

முதல் காட்சி மழையுடன் தொடங்கி, இறுதிக்காட்சியும் மழையிலேயே முடிகிறது. முதல் காட்சியில் கமலினி முகர்ஜி, அஞ்சலி, வடிவுக்கரசி மூன்று பேருமே அந்த மழையில் நனைய ஆசைப்படுகிறார்கள். இறுதிக்காட்சியில் வடிவுக்கரசி, எண்ணமேதுமற்ற கோமாவில் இருப்பார். கமலினி முகர்ஜி, ‘நனையலாமா’ என்று கேட்கும் குழந்தையிடம் ‘நனைந்தால் ட்ரெஸ் நனைஞ்சுடுமே, வேணாம்’ என்பார். அஞ்சலி, தன் குழந்தையுடன் இறங்கி மழையில் நனைவார்.

மழையில் நனைய எல்லோருக்கும் ஆசையிருக்கும், அதை பெண்ணின் மனநிலையோடு பொருத்தி, சமுகத்திற்கான கருத்தையும் சில வுமன்களை வைத்து வெளிப்படுத்திய விதத்திலும், முந்தைய இரண்டு படங்களிலிருந்து வேறு பட்ட கதையைத் தேர்வு செய்ததிலும் இயக்குநர் கைதட்டல் பெறுகிறார். படத்தில் வன்முறை, குடி, மெதுவாக நகர்தல், நீ...ளமான க்ளைமாக்ஸ் என சில மைனஸ் இருந்தாலும், படம் முடிந்தவுடன் அனிச்சையாக மனைவிக்கோ அல்லது காதலிக்கோ தொலைபேசுகிறோம். அதில்தான் இந்த இறைவி வெற்றி பெறுகிறாள்.

Karthik Subbaraj’s 'Iraivi' stirs a hornets’ nest in Kollywood

Karthik Subbaraj (33) is a trendsetting director in Tamil cinema. He made a sensational debut with that delicious Pizza (2012), a thriller made on a shoe string budget that became a sleeper hit. Two years later his gangster story Jigarthanda (title derived from a sweet beverage available in Madurai), got rave reviews and he was called the Quentin Tarantino of Kollywood on social media. The film, an average grosser, took over two years to produce, went over budget and Karthik had a bitter fall out with its producer Kathiresan.

Last Friday Karthik Subbaraj’s ambitious multi-starrer Iraivi (Goddess) released, with critics going ga-ga over it. Noted critic Bardwaj Rangan of The Hindu wrote, “Iraivi is an unusual feminist film, in the sense that it’s seen entirely through the prism of sympathetic male characters. Your men aren’t monsters who drink or cheat on their wives or subject them to torture. They do these things, yes, but… differently.”
The Times Of India critic M Suganth said in his review, “Iraivi signifies the transition of Karthik Subbaraj from a whiz kid who delivered visually dazzling works to a major filmmaker who merits serious discussion. If Pizza and Jigarthanda showed his directing flair, Iraivi is a showcase of his writing prowess. That doesn't mean the film is visually a lesser experience. In fact, it is equally impressive. The film is certainly the most interesting 'drama' we have seen in Tamil cinema in a while.”
Iraivi is getting polarised views on social media. Bollywood director Bejoy Nambiar tweeted : “Iraivi is a bold film with a very unpredictable &unique story @karthiksubbaraj grabs u by the collar & just doesn't let go. A MUST WATCH”.

But down south, Tamil director and actor Lakshmi Ramakrishnan tweeted: “For me Iraivi did not come across as a film with strong female characters, too much violence, and twist was horrible.”

However, trouble started for Iraivi after the first-day-first-show when the powerful Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) members saw red after watching the film. In the film, Karthik depicts a character, a film producer, as the root cause of the hero's (a film director turned alcoholic) film is stuck in the cans. In the film, there is a violent scene where one of the hero’s associate and close friend clubs the producer to death using a hammer. The buzz in trade circles was that Karthik through that gory scene had shown his anger towards his Jigarthanda producer Kathiresan. Now a section within TFPC wants action to be taken against Karthik Subbaraj.

Meanwhile, one of the presenters of Iraivi , leading producer KE Gnanavelraja, felt peeved about the whole issue which by the weekend had blown into a major controversy. In a sensational Whatsapp audio, Gnanavel said that he deeply regret his association with Iraivi. The peeved producer said, “Unlike others, Karthik Subbaraj doesn’t know the pain of becoming a director as he never worked as an assistant to anyone. CV Kumar has introduced Karthik in Pizza and now with Iraivi, the director has not only overshot the budget and put the producer in an insecure state”.

The buzz in trade circles is that Iraivi starring mid-level stars like SJ Surya, Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simhaa, Anjali, Kamaleene Mukerjee, cost around Rs 13.5 crore including print and publicity. Karthik had promised to complete it for Rs 7 crore. The producer of the film CV Kumar had to release it on a deficit, and at the box-office the film is being liked only by critics and multiplex audiences and is not doing well in B and C centres.

Review: Surya shines as film takes a dive in Iraivi

The film tracks the journey of three men as they face various vicissitudes in their life, both personal and professional. Friendship and bonding, wrong and redemption, changing equations in relationships, deception and betrayal, all form part of the scenario. Subbaraj’s debut effort Pizza was a heist saga smartly camouflaged as a horror flick, while Jigarthanda was a delightful take on a rowdy’s attempt to reprise his real life on screen. But this time, Subbaraj has handled a totally-different genre based mainly on human relationship.
While the first half has been crafted with sensibility and sensitivity befitting his acumen, the second half unfortunately leaves much to be desired. The director’s earlier films had never seemed so un-enduringly long. But this film at about 160 minutes of running time is a tad too discomforting and dragging. Through all the highs and lows of the script, it’s S J Surya who rocks. It’s a great comeback role for the director-actor essaying Arul, a frustrated film director, on a self- destructive mode with his drinking binge. Subbaraj has exploited the hitherto-unseen facets of his performance. S J a revelation here, easily overshadows all other performances with his brilliant take on his character. Though the roles are well fleshed-out in the earlier part, some of the relationships are never quite clear. Like the reason for Michael’s extreme devotion to Arul’s family is left to conjecture. Sethupathi, a consummate actor, does his best in the role of Michael. But towards the latter part, with the character’s antics not jelling, the performance too just folds up.

There are a few heists planned and executed, but sans thrill or suspense. And probably if the director had concentrated on it and revolved his characters around it in the second half, the film could have turned out to be interesting. The novelty in the scripting and the freshness in the taking ensured an interesting first half.
Appreciable is editor Vivek Harshan’s slick cutting, shifting from one character to another, stringing the various situations together in an interesting flow. It’s in the second half that the screenplay takes a nosedive never to recover. The director seems to be at a loss on how to move his story forward here, the narration losing interest and momentum. Distracting one is a couple of songs forcibly pushed in. The twist in the plot is the weakest link and seems to be added just for the sake of it. For it neither jells with the flow nor is it convincing.
The Kerala episode seems a misfit. The director vainly ries to throw in some justification for the acts of the characters. But it just does not work. Subbaraj’s women characters are not very inspiring either. A much- anticipated film from Subbaraj, Iraivi disappoints.

'Iraivi' box office collection: Karthik Subbaraj's film turns winner in US

Karthik Subbaraj's "Iraivi" has lived up to the traders' expectations by doing exceedingly well in the United States in its first weekend. The film has collected Rs. 62.87 lakh ($93,765) in its opening weekend, reports Bollywood Hungama.
The success of the Tamil film proves once again that content-rich films enjoy good viewership in the U.S. Following the positive reviews from critics, trade analysts had predicted that the film would do well in North America. The movie, which is being distributed by Sigaram Visual Media and Praneeth Media, was released in 40 screens and had earned $16,450 (Rs. 10.99 lakh) from the premiere alone.

After getting a decent response for the premiere, "Iraivi" went on to attract viewers in big numbers during weekends. As a result, the film made a good collection in its first weekend.



"Iraivi" is an emotional-drama starring SJ Suryah, Vijay Sethupathi and Bobby Simha. Kamalinee Mukherjee, Anjali and Pooja Devariya are the female actresses in lead roles.

The movie, which delves into man-woman relationship, also highlights how women are taken for granted. The performance of the actors has turned out to be the biggest strength of "Iraivi."

Another new release, "Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran," which hit three screens in the U.S., collected Rs. 0.49 lakh ($679). "Idhu Namma Aalu" and "24" were the other Tamil films, which were screened in the U.S.

Coming to "Iraivi," the movie has collected Rs. 5.46 lakh (£5,665) from nine screens in the U.K., while "Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran" has raked in Rs. 3.47 lakh (£3,592). "Idhu Namma Aalu" was shown in two screens and the total collection of the film in this region stands at Rs. 19.76 lakh (£20,496).
