Ilaiyaraaja has composed for a Telugu album with two songs (Thikkalodi Vesham and Naa Kadhalo Yuvarani). Naa kadhalo is a smooth breeze of a melody but my personal favourite is thikkalodi vesham! No one does jazz better in indian film music than this guy

    Padma Vibhushan (2018) for Ilaiyaraja.

Glad that he was recognised at least now, even though accoladed only 5 times with National Film Awards [1984, 1986, 1989, 2010, 2016].

Does anyone know who recommended Ilaiyaraja for Padma Vibhushan ? Thanks.

[From Karagattakaran (1989). Written, Composed and Sung by Ilaiyaraja).

Padma Vibushan for Maestro and USA Symphony Tour 2018

Congratulations to our Dear Maestro Raaja in receiving the second highest civilian award from Govt. of India. This is a well deserved award. Raaja thanked the Modi administration for recognizing the Tamil Nadu people while awarding this prestigious award. In many occasions Raaja has mentioned that big Isai Jambhavans like KV Mahadevan, MS Vishwanathan, Salil Chowdhury weren't recognized with Padma Awards. MSV, Salil and Burman weren't even given National Music Direction awards. Our national awards rarely split the awards between two films or artists. Raaja should have received the National Award for Vaidehi Kathirunthal in 1985 but he was given the honor for Sindhu Bhairavi the same year. We can quote several such misses from Raaja's world record of 1,100 film albums. The legendary Italian music director Ennio Morricone finally received his US Academy Award from Oscar committee in 2016 for Hateful Eight, becoming the oldest person ever to win an Oscar. Morricone's signature tune from 1966 hit movie "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" became the most copied musical piece in many movies.

On another note, Maestro is starting his USA Symphony tour in March 2018. He is bringing the Budapest Symphony Orchestra along with Chithra, Mano, Haricharan and Rahul Nambiar. It is expected that the symphony orchestra will be used to render some rare songs and tunes for Raaja's fans. I am waiting to attend the concert after seeing him in US in 2016.

Mayyam admins: Please open a new 2018 thread for Maestro.

World Class Background Scores - Morricone & Raaja

Two examples of world class background scores - Raaja's title score from Raaja Parvai and Morricone's signature tune from 1966 classic. Splendid performances from two geniuses.

    Tamil Nadu and missed awards

Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the transparency in Padma Awards selection process in his first 2018 Mann ki Baat radio speech and how anyone could nominate any person online. The earlier selection processes was done via political recommendations. In that regard, Tamil Nadu was always dealt a raw deal by state and central governments. It is very unfortunate that one of the most illustrious and famous music director from Tamil Nadu - Mellisai Mannar MSV wasn't conferred any Padma or National Film awards. MSV is considered one of the stalwarts and architects of propagating the spirit of Dravidian movement through his popular tunes with the help of Poet Kannadasan. Look at the number of super duper albums from MSV in classical tunes. MSV should have received the National Award for Aboorva Raagangal in 1975. Vaani Jayaram won the Best Playback singer for the same film. Our subsequent Tamil Nadu state governments failed to nominate or didn't exert enough pressure to confer a Padma Vibushan to Mellissai Mannar. The entire Tamil film fraternity and Raaja spoke about this injustice in various forums. MSV should have received the highest honor - The "Dadasaheb Phalke" Award. We all know how Maestro Raaja lost another National Award for his 2011 Telugu magnum opus album "Sri Rama Rajyam" because the National Film screening committee had bad sound system in the New Delhi screening theatre. There was a big uproar for completely neglecting the Telugu film industry that year. The best music direction award for Raaja was missing. Instead the National Film award jury gave the Best Music Direction award to an unknown Bengali film "Laptop" and Mayook Bhowmik won the award.

At the same time, it is very heart warming to note that two illustrious Tamil Nadu artists - Maestro Raaja and Rahman, both bagged a total of 9 National Awards in a span of 35 years. Their combined awards overtakes the number of national music awards bagged by artists from other states. A national award to Raaja or Rahman is considered as a honor to the people of Tamil Nadu. That's exactly what Raaja mentioned during his Padma press conference. The number of awards bagged by the two great Tamil citizens is a testimony and honor to all the great music directors who worked in Tamil films - MSV, CR Subburaman, TK Ramamoorthy, and G Ramanathan.

The reach of social media and internet was so rudimentary in early 1980 and 90s. The phenomenon of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp all started just 10 years back. Today, New York City is hosting the 60th Edition of Grammy Awards. As you all know, unlike Oscar Academy awards, the Grammy music awards is given to music artists all over the world including religious choirs and traditional folk albums. It's a glaring omission to note that Maestro's outstanding non-film music albums - Nothing But Wind, How to Name It and Thiruvasagam weren't even nominated for Grammys. Madhura Sudha is doing an amazing job in analyzing Maestro's tunes. Kudos to Madhura.

It's time to fix this imbalance in neglecting the immense talented artists from India in international stage. India continues to nominate three hour long movies with songs and dances to Oscar committee. The Academy jury will doze off after 30 minutes of watching our films. I can guarantee that Padmavat will be nominated from India for next year's Academy Award. Padmavat songs are terrible. The producers spent crores of money in lavish sets and paying artists but fail to spend a fraction of the money towards background score and music album. Maestro Raaja could have brought Budapest Symphony Orchestra and provided a world class score for the movie.

Listen to our great Raaja fan Shri. Madhura Sudha describing the intricate details of "How to Name It" album. Folks at Grammy selection jury should listen to this video clip.
