MGR – A Charismatic Actor, Philanthropist, Director, Producer, Editor & Politician.

M.G.R started with his debut film ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ which was directed by an American-born film director, Ellis R. Dungan in 1936. He became the heart-throb of millions of people by initially doing action and romantic roles. MGR gave a blockbuster ‘Manthiri Kumari’ in 1950 and struck gold by getting the opportunity to play the role of a hero in the first ever colour movie ‘Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum’ in Tamil Film Industry. The English movie ‘Prisoner of Zenda’ was interpreted in Tamil version as ‘Nadodi Mannan’, produced and directed by him in 1956 and was wonderfully successful in the theatres. He touched the hearts of millions of fans by his fantabulous performance in movies alike ‘Anbe Vaa’, ‘Adimai Penn’ and won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 1972 for the film ‘Richshawkaran’.

The charismatic actor’s few movies were even filmed abroad and also had been shot in Singapore, Malyasia, Thailand which are considered to be ‘Rarest of The Rare’ of that era. MGR ended his acting career in 1977 and continued as a politician. His films appealed to the direct sentiments of the common man as well as the rich ones which played a crucial role in enabling him to become a great politician. People were very influenced by his films and so by his dialogues.
The philanthropist became a member of the Congress Party in 1953 and became a vocal Tamil and Dravidian nationalist of Dravidian Progressive Federation. He turned to be the member of State Legislative Assembly in 1967 and with his rise in political domain he became the great treasure of DMK in 1969 after the death of Annadurai. He became the CM of Tamil Nadu on 30th June 1977 and continued it till 1987. The AIADMK won every State Assembly Election as long as MGR was alive. As a CM of Tamil Nadu he placed great emphasis on education, social development while “Mid Day Meal Scheme” was one of his most popular successful policies. As a politician he introduced “Women’s Special Buses” and banned liquor in the state. He gave priority to the prevention of old temples and historical monuments with the aim to raise the state tourist income.MGR had good terms with M.R. Radha and had worked together in 25 films. Once M.R. Radha as a producer had a conversation with MGR regarding the assignment but while conversing M.R.Radha suddenly stood up and fired twice in the ears of MGR. This resulted in ear problem which lead to the lost of hearing in his left ears. In his later life he had kidney issues in the early 1983 which was further complicated by diabetes and thus opted in going to Brooklyn, U.S. for undergoing a kidney transplant.

MGR founded ‘Thai Weekly Magazine’ and ‘Anna Daily Newspaper’ in Tamil and was also its editor. In 1962 during the war in China he was the first donor and donated Rs. 75,000. Also he offered relief in disasters and calamities like fire, flood, drought and cyclone. His official residence at T.Nagar is now MGR Memorial House while his film studio has been now converted into Women’s College. He died because of kidney failure followed by diabetes and massive stroke in 1987. MGR will always be memorable in the minds of the people. He is undoubtedly an iconic and was a complex man who triumphed over poverty. This multi-talented actor, director, producer, editor and politician will undoubtedly be loved by all.
