King Sagar - the great, great ancestor of Rama, the ruler of Ayodhya - to show his power performed Ashwamedha Yagya - he would send his war horse around the world with his kingdom flag on it and the horse would return untouched, every time, all the 99 times it was sent. Our God king Indra could not tollerate Sagar's authority over the world, so he kidnapped the horse when it was sent the 100th time and hid it in the ashram of Kapila Muni - an avatar of Vishnu who has come to the world to restore spiritual balance through his teaching.

King Sagar went along with sixty thousand Ayodhya Pinces to retrive the Yagya horse, and Kapila Muni mistaking their intention brought all of them to ashes. Hearing the news, the grandon of King Sagar, King Bhagiratha, pleaded to Kapila Muni for the lives of his family members. Kapila Muni announced to him that only the Holy Ganga could give them Salvation.

Thus, King Bhagiratha prayed to Brahma for years to bring Ganga to the earth and cleanse his ancestor's ashes and send their soul to Heaven. Brahma, as usual pleased by the penance, grants the passage of Ganga, but asked him to meet up with Shiva, as he is the only person who could control and supress the weight and power of the Ganga's descent.

Upon the plea of King Bhagiratha and fulfilling the granted wish of Brahma, Shiva let loose his hair, under which Ganga gets caught. Her rush was turned into several spirals, as Shiva started to attach his hair, finally trapping Ganga in his 'Kondai' and a sprinkle from this action flows down on earth washing the ashes of Lord Rama's ancestors, in-turn cleansing their souls to get an entry into the heaven.
