A brief study on the rule of Maraatiyar kings in Thanjavur of Tamil Nadu

Bijapur Sulthan ordered Venkaaji (also known as Ekoji) the own brother of Sivaji who was at that time only an army general under the Bijapur Sulthan, to capture Thanjavur on behalf of the legitimate successor Sengalamadas the surviving young son of the former Naayakkar king Vijayaragava Naayakkan of Thanjavur. Venkaaji after capturing Thanjavur refused to give it to Sengalamadas, and crowned himself as the first independent Maraatiya king of Thanjavur in the year A.D.1675.
