A brief study on the rule of Karnataka - Vijayanagara Empire in Tamil Nadu

In the year A.D.1311 the Muslim general Malik Kafur and his forces lead by Sundera Paandiyan who seeked their assistance to reinstate his position as the king of Paandiyan kingdom Mathurai from its ruler his brother Vira Paandiyan. The expedition was successful with Sundera Paandiyan having regained the Pandiyan throne. Malik Kafur in the meantine left a garrison of Muslim soldiers to protect Sundara Paandiyan, and returned to Delhi with his amassed heavy booty from Madhura and presented same to his master - Emperor Allauddin Kilji.

During this period the Muslim Emperoros of Delhi successfully captured many regions in Karnaataka too . These incidences made two great Kannada warriors named Harihara and Bukka emerge with determination to put a stop to the domination of the Muslim Emperors of Delhi over the regions in Karnaataka, banded themselves together with many other Kannada warriors and formed a new kingdom at Hampi in Karnaataka. These kings of Hampi gradually re-captured all the lost territories in Karnaataka and formed an empire known as the "Vijayanagara empire" of Hampi.

Towards this time Emperor Harihara and Bukka heard of the religious atrocities of these Sultans that took place in the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, and with determination to save the Hindus of Madurai, their practice of Hinduism and functioning of Hindu Temples, sent a large expedition to the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu in the year A.D.1377 to relieve it from the clutches of it's Sultans.

    (6) Viravijayaraayan (A.D.1422 - 1426)

    (7) Devaraaya - 2 (A.D.1426 - 1446)

    (8) Virupaksha - 2 (A.D.1446 - 1485)

    (9) Saaluva Narasimha - 1 (A.D.1485 - 1491)

    (10) Saaluva Narasimhan - 2 (A.D.1491 - 1505)

    (11) Vira Narasimhan (A.D.1505 - 1509)

    (16) King of Thiruvananthapuram (A.D.1534 - 1535)

    (17) Acchuthadevaraayan (A.D.1535 - 1537)

Anarchy prevailed at Mathurai and a Paandya king got himself crowned as the king at Mathurai. At this time the Virasekara Cholan from Thanjavur waged war and drove the Paandiya king away and brought Mathurai under Chola sway. The Paandiyan king seeked the assistance of the Vijayanagara king of Karnataka, who sent his general Nagama Nayaka to intervene and settle the dispute. He instead of re-instating the Paandiya king drove away the Chola king from Mathurai, and made himself independent at Mathurai free of control from Vijayanagara kingdom. Kannada Emperor Acchuthadevaraya immediately sent Visvanatha Nayaka the son of Nagama Nayaka who captured the father and brought him as prisoner to the Vijayanagara kingdom. With his act of loyalty of towards the Vijayanagara empire Acchuthadevaraya appointed him as his "viceroy" at Mathurai with distributed power to him to directly control the affairs of the Paandiyan kingdom on behalf of the Vijaayanagar empire. For better control of the affairs in Tamil Nadu he also appointed two other such "viceroys" both at Thanjavur and Senji (Gingee).

    (18) Acchuthadevaaraayan (A.D.1537 - 1543)
