kannada film music
Oh! What a selection from the treasure? Rajesh!
The film ‘maNNina maga’ a B/W film released during 1968. Rajkumar and Kalpana starring very popular/famous movie during those days. ‘maNNina maga’ means ‘son of soil’.
It is story of a difference between rich and poor of same family with happy ending. Scintillating music by Vijayabhaskar and meaning full lyrics by Geethapriya. Heroine sings this song after a party where many participants start misbehaving.
The other songs are:
1.bareyada kaigaLu bareyutire (S Janaki)
2.bhagavaMta kaikoTTa yAke? (PBS)
3.mellage naDeyOle mallige muDidOLe (PS)
The lyric of the song ‘idEna sabhyate’ follows:
citra: maNNina maga (1968)
gAyana: pi sushIla
saMgIta: vijaya bhAskar
sAhitya: gItapriya
idEna sabhyate idEna saMskRuti..
idEna sabhyate idEna saMskRuti
idEna iMdu satyate idEna namma jAgRuti
eMdu noMdu kELutihaLu namma tAyi bhArati /idEna/

dAsyadiMda nammanu biDisi amararAdaru
amara rAmarAjyada kanasu kaMDevaMdu
bariya bhEda bhAvava kANutihevu iMdu
kANutihevu iMdu /idEna/
dEshavannu kAyutiharu gaDigaLalli yOdharu
namage anna nIDalu duDiyutiharu raitaru
avara tyAga duDimeya parive namage illa
gAMdhi neharu shAstriyannu nAvu maretevalla
nAvu maretevalla /idEna/
dEshadA samasyegaLu iralu kOTi kOTi
adanu maretu sAgide phyAshannina paipOTi
mAna muccikoLLalu kelavarige baTTe illa
pUrti maimuccalu kelavarige manasilla
kelavarige manassilla /idEna/
The meaning of the song:
Is it decency? Is it culture?
Is it today’s truthfulness? Is it our alertness?
Our mother India is asking/suffering with pain.
How many patriotic personalities sacrificed their blood
Got us freedom from slavery and became immortal
We saw a dream of that immortal ‘rAma rAjya’ then
Today we see only dissimilarity, differences.
Soldiers are watching at the borders of our country
To give food to us farmers are doing hard work
We are unaware of their hard work and labour
We have forgotten Gandhi, Nehru, and Shastry
Problems of the country are plenty (in crores - kOTi)
Fashion competition is dominating above these problems
Many people have no clothes to cover their body (to live in respect)
Some people don’t want to wear clothes fully

Here's a news item from Hindu:
The song "Gaali Gopura" from the film Nandadeepa is over 40 years old. But to this day it remains one of the most favourite film songs of Kannada film lovers. Even though we continue to sing this song composed by M. Venkataraju, not many perhaps know who the lyricist of the song is. Forget the masses, ask people in the industry and they'd probably look blank. Sorat Ashwath, the man who wrote many memorable songs lived a life of utter poverty, even as he enriched Kannada film music.

this would be the place to bring in some gems from that period.
That was a period where good directors like S.R.Puttanna, B.R.Bandhulu
actors like kalyan kumar, udayakumar , rajkumar and actresses like
kalpana, aarthi, jayanthi, sarojadevi gave good performances. Lyricists like sadashiviah, prabhakara sastry, ku.ra.see,vijayanarasimha gave good lyrics.
Let us recollect that era with some memorable songs of that period.
To Start with
"Cheluvantha chennigane"
Movie: Amarashilpi jakkanachari
Music: S.Rajeswararao
Lyrics: Sadashiviah
Singer: P.Suseela
film had Kalyankumar & B.Sarojadevi in lead
this is a great song by S.Rajeswararao
In telugu the film was amara shipli jakkanna
and the equivalent song is Andhala bomalotho aatadava
coming to this kannada song, it's a dance sequence song sung beautifully by PS. see how she sings kannada too effortlessly
listen and enjoy

They were good because they were seriously into movies and not into politics. Looks like Kannada heroes can do well in other languages like telugu and tamil. Most notable ones were Rajnikant, JJ, Saroja Devi, Arjun and Murali.
The ones who stay back here today totally suck. They play into Mandya or Mysore politics. Everyone expects them to help them state the policy of Karnataka. And they play the drama as they are experts in it. Raj Kumar and his fans brought shame to Kannada. He started the trend. His actor friends in AP and TN guided him.
Even today they will do good if we see them as actors or actresses rather than leaders. We must ask them dance, laugh or cry and they will do it very well. But we expect them to lead us. That they will suck.
Typically in their movies they develop an image of Protectors of the Land, water, men and women. Common. What is this bs. And the heroine is there to sing and dance with him or support his ideology.
What is happening today is by subsidising them, we are letting them come into politics and rule us. That is what has happened in AP and TN and we are following their footsteps. For this the hard working Kannadigas are paying our taxes. What do we lose if there are no Kannada films ? In all the other states the Government earns from movies. But here we lose money on them.
Movie stars are becoming politicians as though they came to act to "speak" for the people. Our politicians should rule us and not these nataka people.
Today patriotism in our state is just watching and hearing Kannada films and music. It is taking heavy tolls on the prestige of Kannadigas. I see all forums in Kannada just talking about that or how to oppose the people of other languages. Why have we become like that ?

A beautiful selection!
The film ‘jEnu gUdu’ is a black and white film directed by Sri Y R Swami. South Indian famous actress Mrs. Jayanthi’s first film. Her name was Kamala kumari, which was changed as ‘Jayanthi’ subsequently. She was at the age of 14 years when YRS invited her to act in this film in the year ‘1962-63’. She had played a negative roll and third heroin in the order in this film.
Incidentally, Actress Mrs. Chandrakala’s first film also.
This song is a sequence of couple’s first night duet song having dignified words in the lyrics by ku ra si. Vijayakrishnamurthy’s music is magnificent.
The lyric follows:

The film name is ‘jEnu gUdu’ means ‘bee-hive’.
Meaning of the song:
We are together in this sweet (honey) night, what else we need
Stream of joyous essence spouting, I don’t need any more
Delicate humour, shivering body (mainimiru?) resulting in shaking hand
Don’t have hesitation, don’t have fear, be silent, you will come to know (gradually)
This is the way flowering plants sprout
God promise (shivanANe) some thing new for me (also), don’t ask further
Who you are, who am I, came to know and joined with love
Came together with affection, forgetting that we are two
(separate individuals)
Two bodies, one breath, this is the hymn we chant
Let us live happy life by which neighbours should feel shyness.
