பழங்கால தமிழர்கள் ஆயகலைகள் 64 The ancient Sixty Four - Tamil Kalaikal of Tamil Nadu

The first reference to the 64 - Tamil Kalaikal are found as follows, in the first century A.D. Kerala Tamil Epic "Silappathikaaram" of Ilango Adikal of Kerala - the former Tamil Chera Nadu.

(1)".....எண்எண் கலையும் இசைந்து உடன் போக
பண்ணும் திறனும் புறங்கூறு நாவின்......"

"......en en Kalaiyum isainthu udan poka pannum thiranum purangkooru naavin....."

(2) "......எண்ணான் கிரட்டி இருங்கலை பயின்ற
பண்ணியல் மடந்தையர் பயங்கெழு வீதி

"......en naanku eratti (8 x 4 x 2 = 64) yirungkalai payintra panniyan madanthaiyar payankelu veethi....."

(3) ".....பண்ணுங் கிளையும் பழித்த தீஞ்சொல்
எண்ணெண் கலையோர் இருபெரு வீதியும்......"

"......pannum kilaiyum (kilavi) paliththa theenchol en en (8 x 8 = 64) kalaiyoar iru peru veethiyum (sirutham, peruthanam) ......"

Silappathikaaram - Uur kaan Kaathai

The great Tamil Poet Kambar of the period of 12th century who adorned the court of the Chola King Kulothunga Cholan - 2 composed the "Saraswathi Anthathi" the first verse of this work to the 64 - Tamil Kalaikal which prevailed during this period as follows:

ஆய கலைகள் அறுபத்து நான்கினையும்
ஏய வுணர்விக்கு மென்னம்மை - தூய
வுருப் பளிங்கு போல் வாளென் உள்ளத்தின் உள்ளே
யிருப்பளிங்கு வாரா திடர்.

The details of the 64 - Tamil Kalaikal are given on a stone slab erected in the courtyard of the Thiruvathikai Siva Temple at Panruti in Kadalur district of Tamil Nadu. (More information to be provided shortly)

The complete list of 64 - Tamil Kalaikal are listed in the "Tamil & English" Dictionary by Rev' Miron Winslow under the word 'Kalai Gnanam'. The names given in same are as given within brackets against each name listed, with the correct "Tamil Names" by Thiru Udayakumar. We are aware that the first References to the 64 - Tamil Kalaikal were in the Silappathikaaram of first century, and these 'Tamil Names' of "64 -Tamil Kalaikal" of Tamil Nadu, were changed subsequently with the relevent Sanskrit words, during the first phase of Sanskritisation of Tamil Nadu with the comming of the Pallava rule in North Tamil Nadu in the Thondaimandalam region, during the period sixth century A.D.
