I am not dissapointed with the album at all, its thara local. If you feel like elite you might not like it. I see lot of haters commenting the songs, online bullies (youtube, fb) have come out just to make people upset while listening to songs.

I haven't listened to them yet, but I doubt it could be worse than Masss songs

Still have faith in Anirudh, lost completely in YSR.
Never argue with a fool or he will drag you down to his level and beat you at it through sheer experience!

Seriously all the people who have straight away thrashed this album as just noise should learn the idea of how a film composition works.

Songs are not composed just because the composer came into the studio, sneezed and then suddenly decided "let's compose noise". The situations are given to the composer and he/she can only compose based on the required theme and feel of the situation. And given that the theme of this film is that of a local slum chieftain who does everything in a "its my way or the highway" style; the lyrics, situation and song easily reflect this. The lyrics are already a giveaway of the overall film theme which justifies the energy and wackiness in the songs.

Coming to the review of the album, it is incredibly energetic and compliments the lyrics to a T! But the energy isn't just matched to pure koothu but also in terms of different genres such as the 80s style disco pop for the song oru vidha aasai (brilliant guitar usage), western classical fused with koothu in Bagulu odayum and RnB in Don'u Don'u Don'u. Catchy, brilliant and pure fun in every corner of this album

'Oru Vidha Aasai' reminded me of another awesome song from 'Nameless Gangster - Heard a Rumor'. 'Maari Thara Local' is an instant 'tongue-folder'.
Rest of the song should hear them at home (with Vol.Max), but for the moment the songs are 'Antha Maari'.

    Maari Songs (2015)

Rarely our TFI songs (in global term 'a Tamil Film OST') come under a thematic element. Usually they are considered as 'Variety' as its a scoop of everything inside it or you just can't pin point what its all about because more than the music, it's visual dependant. Maari is one such OST which rides on the line - 'Thara Local' - a South Indian Regional, notably Tamil Nadu, slang depicting a kind of percussion produced using a handmade beater and usually the lyrics are informal, added to bring in the needed mood for the event, be it a festival or a moaning.

Maari Songs casually juggles with the tempo, fussion between folk and western beats and travels through various genres containing them all within itself without going astary from the choosen theme - you got techno, jazz, rock & roll, R&B, rap, etc., all theming up into a variegated music, coloquially known as 'Kuthu' - a form of dance expressing the wholesome joy through body movements.

Maari Music Album proposes 4 full length song, a motif instrumental with chorus and a prologue. Every single track is attached to each other. A runtime well under 20 minutes, a wise choice by the makers to mingle it with the narrative, rather than creating a hinderence to the advancement. Already the brisk tracks will take care of itself and Danush on screen should be an amusement to watch. The tracks don't have a second stanza is peculiar.

    1/ Bagulu Odayam Dagulu Mari

    Vaaya Utta Daulath Mari
    Vaazhkai Unaku Mudinja Mari
    Vettu Uzhum Andha Mari
    Rowdyism Venna M....

A violin piece is gruesomely choped with ultra-heavy beats. The lyrics are as aggressive as the vocals which try to beat the hardcore beats. Short, flavoured & Thara Local - can already see the pigeons talking & side-kicks flying.

    2/ Don-u Don-u Don-u

Va ma Twinklu, come 'n' Minglu [but I like it this way 'Va ma Tinklu, come 'n' Twinklu']

This song closes in much with one of the super-hit song of the 90s. It's got 'Tanglish' lyrics - Danush-Anirudh combo brightness - for groovy rythms. Alisha Thomas does the SPB, and kind of liked her deep voice.

    3/ Oru Vidha Aasai

Idhu varai Kuthu Pattuku Kuthuna Unnaku Melody Pidikiratha

'Maari, the mutton lover, tasting Jasmine'. It should have been fun to see these guys working on such a song. The guitar riffs and bass drums make it sound like a Garage Rock - teens trying out their Christmas presents. And yeah, there is an awesome Sax bit inside.

    4/ Maari Thara Local

Hey Intha Hey Intha Hey Intha

Self explanatory. Percussion at its best with added sound effects.

    5/ Maari Swag

    Thakita Thakita Thakita Thakita

A bundling-up of Mari - 'Here, this is who Maari is' kind of build-up sans words. Its an extracted bit from 'Maari Thara Local' song.

    6/ Thappa Dhaan Theriyum

Intha Ooroda Light-u, Maari the Great-u

Somehow the pathos did not work for me. It sounded like a joke. In the above 5, Love to Hardcore was fine, but somewhat, the desperation of Maari could not be brought out Thara Locally. But still, apart from funny lyrics and its rendering, Anirudh sticks to his beaters in this one too.

Anirudh along with Balaji Mohan comes up with a great idea, well assisted by Danush, not only just to produce music but making it entertaining too.
