" தம்பி எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவர்களின் உடல் மட்டும் அல்ல உள்ளம் கூட தங்கம் போன்றதாகும். தங்கம் உருக்கி வார்க்கப்பட்டு அடிதெடுக்கப்பட்ட பின்னரே பளபளப்பைப் பெறுகிறது. எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவர்களும் வாழ்வில் வறுமையால் வாட்டப்பட்டு உருக்கி எடுக்கப்பட்டவர்.
ஏறக்குறைய எல்லா நடிகர்களின் வாழ்வும் இப்படிப் பட்டதாகத்தான் இருக்கும். வாழ்க்கையில் மிகவும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு வறுமை சூழ்ந்து மிகச் சிரமப்பட்டுப் பத்து பதினைந்து ஆண்டுகள் நடித்து அதற்குப்பின் ஐந்நூறு ஆண்டுகள் உழைத்தால்தான் பல இலட்சங்களைப் பார்க்க முடியும். ‘அப்படியெல்லாம் இருந்தாரே அவரா இவர்? என்று சிலர் பார்த்துக் கேட்கக் கூடிய நிலை பிறக்கும்.
நடிகர்களின் வருமானம் கூட்டல் கணக்கல்ல கழித்தல் கணக்கு. இவ்வாண்டு ரூ.5 இலட்சம் என்றால் அதற்கு அடுத்த ஆண்டு இரண்டு இலட்சம் என்றுதான் அந்தக் கணக்கு காட்டும். ஆகவே கிடைக்கிற காலத்தில் அது நற்செயலுக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டதாகக் கணக்கு இருந்தால்தான் அதுதான் போற்றத்தக்கது.
ஆனால் என் தம்பி எம்.ஜி.ஆர் தன் எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்படாது இந்தத் தொகை தன்னிடமே இருந்தால் பின்னால் பயன்படுமே என்றும் நினைக்காது குறைவின்றிக் கொடுத்து வருகிறார். ரூ.10 லட்சம் சம்பாதிப்பவர் ஒரு லட்சத்தில் மண்டபம் கட்டுவதை நாம் பார்க்கிறோம். கட்ட ஆரம்பிக்கும்போதே பணம் சம்பாதிப்பவர்களையும் கூட நாம் சந்திக்கிறோம்.
அப்படியில்லாது எம்.ஜி.ஆர் காத்திருக்கிறார் பணத்தை நோக்கி. எங்கே வருகிறது எங்கே வருகிறது என்று வழி பார்த்திருக்கிறார். வந்ததும் கொடுக்கிறேன் கொடுக்கிறேன் என்று வழங்குகிறார். இந்த அனாதைகள் இல்லத்திற்கு அவ்வை இல்லம் என்று பெயர் இருப்பதை மிகவும் பெருமைக்குரிய ஒன்றாகும்."

1957 – ஆம் ஆண்டில், கவியரசரின் கருத்தாழமிக்க திரைக்கதை வசனத்தோடு வெளிவந்த ‘மகாதேவி’ திரைப்படத்திலும், கவிஞரின் பொன்னான பாடல்கள் முத்திரை பதிக்கத் தவறவில்லை.

“கண்மூடும் வேளையிலும் கலை என்ன கலையே!
கண்ணே உன் பேரழகின் விலை இந்த உலகே!”

“சிங்காரப் புன்னகை கண்ணாரக் கண்டாலே
சங்கீத வீணையும் எதுக்கம்மா!”

இந்த இளமை, இனிமை ததும்பும் இவ்விரு பாடல்களோடு,

மகாபாரதப் போரில் அபிமன்யூ மாள, மகன பிரிவால் தாய் சுபத்திரை துடிதுடிப்பதைப் படம்பிடித்துக் காட்டும்,

“மானம் ஒன்றே பெரிதெனக் கொண்டு
வாழ்வது நமது சமுதாயம்!
மரண பயங்கரம் சூழ்ந்து வந்தாலும்
மாறிவிடாது ஒரு நாளும்!”

என்ற பல்லவியுடன், படத்திற்கே முத்தாய்ப்பாய் அமைந்த பாடலும்;

“காமுகர் நெஞ்சில் நீதியில்லை – அவர்க்குத்
தாயென்றும் தாரமென்றும் பேதமில்லை!”

என்ற தத்துவ சமூகநீதிப் பாடலும்; எம்.ஜி.ஆர் படத்திற்குப் புகழ் சேர்ந்த பாடல்களே!

1957 ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த " மகாதேவி " என்ற திரைப்படத்தில் இந்தப்பாடல் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது . இந்தப்படத்தில் mgr , வீரப்பா மற்றும் பலர் நடித்திருந்தனர் . " மணந்தால் மகாதேவி , இல்லையேல் மரணதேவி " இது வீரப்பா பேசிய புகழ் பெற்ற வசனமாகும் . இந்தப் படத்துக்காக மக்கள் கவிஞர் பட்டுக்கோட்டை கல்யாணசுந்தரம் அவர்கள் இரண்டு பாடல்கள் எழுதினார் . அதில் ஒன்று தான் இந்தப்பாடல் . இந்தப்பாடல் எழுதப்பட்டு 57 வருடங்களுக்கு மேல் ஆனாலும் , இந்தப் பாடலின் வரிகள் நமக்கு மட்டுமல்ல , உலகத்துகே இன்றைக்கும் பொருந்தும்...

குறுக்கு வழியில் வாழ்வு தேடிடும் குருட்டு உலகமடா
இது கொள்ளையாடிப்பதில் வல்லமை காட்டும் திருட்டு உலகமடா

அமாவாசை அன்றைக்கு..

தேங்காய் கற்பூரச் சுற்றில் ஆரம்பித்த இந்தப் படம் அடுத்த அமாவாசை வருவதற்குச் சற்று முன்னதாகவே பூசணிக்காய் சுற்றிப் போட்டு உடைத்ததோடு நிறைவு பெற்றது. முதல் பிரதியும் தயாராகி விட்டது.

14.1.1964 பொங்கல் திருநாள்.

சென்னை மவுண்ட் ரோடு சித்ரா தியேட்டரின் முகப்பே தெரியாதபடி அட்டகாசமாக அலங்கரிக்கப் பெற்றிருந்தது.

காடு, மலை, குகை, கரடி, புலி விலங்குகள் வரையப்பட்ட வண்ண வண்ண பேனர்கள்.

இவற்றுடன் கூட இதுவரையில் தோன்றாத ‘கவ்பாய்’ உடையில் தோன்றிய எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஒரு மரத்தை இடது கையால் பிடித்த படி வலது கையை நீட்டிய வண்ணம் பாய்ந்து கொண்டிருப்பதைப் போன்ற ஒரு பெரிய உயரமான ‘கட்அவுட்’ மேலே ஒரு புறத்தில் நிறுத்தப்பட்டுக் காட்சி தந்தது.


எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் ரசிகர்கள் அதையே வைத்த விழி வாங்காமல் பார்த்து வாயைப் பிளந்து கொண்டு ஆச்சரியத்திலும் ஆனந்தத்திலும் மூழ்கித் திளைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.

தியேட்டருக்கு எதிரில் சாலையோரம் கீழ்த்திசையில் ஓடும் கூவம் தேம்ஸ் நதியாகவும், சித்ரா டாக்கீஸ் லண்டன் பக்கிங்ஹாம் அரண்மனையாகவும் மாறி விட்டதைப் போல. அன்றாடம் மாலை வேளைகளில் மின் விளக்குகளால் மின்னி ஜெகஜ்ஜோதியாக ‘ஜேஜே’ என்று திகழ்ந்தது.

வேட்டைக்காரன் வெற்றியைக் கண்டு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ரசிகர்கள் மட்டும் அல்லாமல், எம்.ஜி.ஆரே வியந்து போனார்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பிக்சர்சில் தேவர் பிலிம்ஸ் கொடியும் தேவர் பிலிம்ஸில் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் கொடியும் மற்றவர்கள் மெச்சும்படியாக உச்சியில் பறந்தது.

தேவரண்ணன் சட்டையின் காலரைத் தூக்கி விட்டுக் கொள்ளவில்லை. ஏனெனில் சண்முகனான முருகனைத் தவிர வேறு எந்தக் கடவுளையும் சட்டை செய்யாத அண்ணன் சட்டையே அணியாத சந்தனத்திருமேனி கொண்டவர்.

வேட்டைக்காரன் நூறாவது நாள் வெற்றி விழா அன்றைக்கு அதன் வட, தென்னாற்காடு மற்றும் செங்கற்பட்டு மாவட்ட விநியோக நிறுவனமான ‘கிரஸண்ட் மூவிஸ்’ அதிபர் என் அன்பிற்குரிய அண்ணன் அகமது யாசின், தேவர் பிலிம்ஸ் அலுவலகக் குழுவினருக்கு மதிய உணவு விருந்தளிக்கும் வகையில் ஒரு பெரிய அண்டா நிறைய மட்டன் பிரியாணியும், இதர அசைவப் பதார்த்தங்களையும் வழங்கி வயிறுகளைப்புடைக்க வைத்தார்.

Ram Ganesh Gadkari was one of the leading playwrights of Maharashtra who created history within his short lifespan of 35 years. His most famous play was ‘Punya Prabhav,’ hailed as a classic of Indian theatre.

‘Punya Prabhav’ was adapted for the big screen by the cult figure of Tamil Cinema Kavignar Kannadasan as Mahadevi. The film was directed and produced by the sadly neglected figure of Indian Cinema, Sundar Rao Nadkarni.

Nadkarni, who hailed from Mangalore, was multi-faceted — an actor, editor, cinematographer, director, producer and more. His most successful film which created history is the M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar-T.R. Rajakumari-starrer Haridas (1944), which ran uninterruptedly for 114 weeks in a single cinema ‘Broadway’ in Madras City, witnessing three Deepavali festivals….

Nadkarni made Mahadevi under his banner ‘Sri Ganesh Movietone,’ named after his father-in-law Ganesh Rao, a well-known medical practitioner in Bangalore decades ago, to whom the movie is dedicated. B. Radhakrishna, his brother-in-law, was the co-producer. He worked with Nagi Reddi-Chakrapani and the Vijaya-Vauhini unit as production executive.

Mahadevi featured M.G. Ramachandran and Savithri in the lead roles. Actor-producer P. S. Veerappa played the villain. An interesting cloak-and-dagger romance about the intrigues in a royal family, Mahadevi proved a success. A Tamil king defeats his rival in battle, but impressed with his bravery, he treats him and his daughter (Savithri) as his guests. The king has an adopted daughter (Rajam) and a prince (‘Master’ Murali). His senior commander (Veerappa) lusts after the heroine (Savithri), who, however, chooses the junior commander (MGR).

The villain asks his sidekick (Chandra Babu) to kidnap the heroine at night, who makes a mess of it by kidnapping the other woman (Rajam). To cover up his folly, the commander marries her. The two women have children and the villain indulges in many subterfuges to seduce the heroine, but all his plans like blinding the hero and killing his child fail. In the process, he loses his own child. Shocked on learning the truth, he kills himself, and so does his wife.

The somewhat complicated tale was well narrated on screen by the talented filmmaker. Another contributing factor for the success of Mahadevi was its melodious music composed by Viswanathan-Ramamurthi and the lyrics were by Kannadasan, Thanjai Ramaiah Das, Marudhakasi and Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram.

Songs such as ‘Singara Punnagai,’ ‘Thanthana Paattu Padanum,’ ‘Kaa Kaa Mai Kondaa,’ ‘Thaayathu Amma Thaayathu,’ ‘Kurukku Vazhiyil’ and ‘Kamugar Nenjil’ became popular.

Remembered for the impressive performances by MGR, Savithri, Rajam and Veerappa, and the melodious songs.

MGR became a great hero, mostly with the competitive villainy of either Veerappa or Nambiar or with both of them seen together, in the same film of that marvellous hero. MGR and Veerappa fought against each other in a number of films.

The most memorable in this list was the film Mahadevi,with MGR as King and P.S.Veerappa,as his lieutenant,craving for the king's wife.This film showed Veerappa in the worst ever villain role,that invited the spontaneous hatred of everyone, particularly the women among the audience.

Their hatred was more against his performance than against him.How crude a villain he was in that film, to turn the hero blind and then attempt to kill the hero's new born kid just for the sake of his craving for the wife of another man. Mahadevi produced by the Jupiter pictures, was a historic hit and Veerappa's villainy was its major contributing factor.


There were other fantastic series of the MGR-Veerappa tussle,like Marudha Naatu Ilavarasi, Jenoa, Mannadhi Mannan,Chakravarthithirumagal, Vikramadhithan, Alibaabaavum Naarpadhu Thirudargalum,Nadodi Mannan,Rajarajan,and Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundara Pandian, which happened to be the last film of MGR.

All these films were based on royal or mythical themes with stories about great kings and their ordeals in achieving good in the midst of concerted wickedness and evil.Obviously,Veerappa always reflected the wrong side in all these films.Naam, Anandha Jothi and Pallaandu Vaazhga were the other films of MGR in which Veerappa acted as villain, but these three films were based on family and social themes.

Anandha Jothi was produced by P.S.Veerappa himself,under Hariharan Pictures.In Pallaandu Vaazhga, Veerappa was shown as a confirmed baddie waiting to be reformed by a good police officer, played by MGR.In Anandha Jothi, Kamalahasan had also acted, as a child artist.


During my childhood days I used to shudder at the very appearance of P.S.Veerappa.I hated him on the screen more than I hated M.N.Nambiyar, because the latter did good character roles in several films like Makkalai Petra Magarasi,Dhigambara Saamiyar,Nallavan Vaazhvaan,Samaya Sanjeevi, Boologa Rambai,Panathottam,Ninaithadhai Mudippavan and so on. Imagine Veerappa's role in a film like Kaidhi Kannaayiram,a Modern Theatres' film that had R.S.Manohar and K.A.Thangavelu as two heroes.

How horrid Veerappa was, both in looks and role portrayal, in that film.Every child shivered at his sight.So did I. Veerappa's other unforgettable villain role was in the movie Vanjikkottai Valiban produced by Gemini Studios.After the famous one liner 'Mahadevi Enna Mudivu Seidhirukkiraai?'{'Mahadevi, What have you decided?'} in the film 'Mahadevi' the other great one liner 'Sabash!Sariyaana Poetti' {'Wow!A proper contest'}would have gone into the memory lane of the audience, to stay there permanently.



Veerppa's delivery of chaste Tamil dialogues, was ever a treat to our ears.His timing, precision and clarity of dialogue delivery, were his major assets, as a devoted actor, aptly trained in all norms of dramatic intricacies.Apart from these admirable acting qualities,P.S.Veerappa was extraordinarily good at fencing.Many film goers would have enjoyed the MGR movies released in the Nineteen fifties and sixties, mainly for the felicitous style of fencing displayed by MGR and P.S. Veerappa. Though Veerappa was good at fisticuffs,it was his fencing zeal that was scaled high.
