நவரச நாயகன் கார்த்திக்கின் அனைத்து குறும்புகளும் கெளதம் கார்த்திக்கிடமும் இருக்கிறது. மணிரத்னம் இயக்கத்தில் 'கடல்' மற்றும் 'என்னமோ ஏதோ' என இரண்டு படங்களையும் நடித்து முடித்துவிட்டார். அடுத்ததாக வெளியாகவிருக்கும் படம் 'வை ராஜா வை'. பட வேலையில் துறுதுறுவென்று இருந்தவரை அரை மணி நேரம் சிறைப்பிடித்து பேச்சு கொடுத்தோம்.

வை ராஜா வை படம் எப்படி வந்திருக்கிறது?

வேல்ராஜ், யுவன், டேனியல் பாலாஜி, ப்ரியா ஆனந்த், விவேக் என பெரிய ஸ்டார்ஸ் எல்லோரும் இந்தப் படத்துல நடிச்சிருக்காங்க. இவ்வளவு பெரிய பட்ஜெட் படத்துக்கு இயக்குநர் ஐஸ்வர்யா தனுஷ்தான் காரணம். ஐடியில் வேலை செய்யுற மிடில் க்ளாஸ் பையன்தான் கார்த்திக். அந்தப் பையனுக்கு ஏற்படுகிற பிரச்னை, அந்த பிரச்னையில இருந்து எப்படி அவன் தப்பிக்கிறான்ங்றதுதான் கதையே.

ஆக்*ஷன், காமெடி, ரொமான்ஸ்... இதுல எந்த டைப் ஹீரோவா ஆகணும்னு ஆசைப்படுறீங்க?

ஆக்*ஷன் ஹீரோவா மட்டும் நடிச்சா, ஆக்*ஷன் மட்டும்தான் இவனுக்கு வரும் அப்படினு ரசிகர்கள் நினைச்சிப்பாங்க. அப்படி எதுலேயும் லாக் ஆயிடக் கூடாது. இந்த மூணுலேயுமே சாதிக்கணும். எந்த கதாபாத்திரம் கிடைச்சாலும் பண்ணணும்.

அப்பாவை மாதிரியே நீங்களும் ரொம்ப ஜாலி டைப்னு சொல்றாங்களே?

நான் படிச்சது வளர்ந்தது எல்லாமே ஊட்டிலதான். அப்பாவோட நல்லா பழக முடியலை. சென்னை வந்தப்போ 'கடல்' பட ஷூட்டிங். கடல் முடியுற வரைக்கும் அப்பாவோட நேரம் ஒதுக்கவே முடியலை. ஆனா நான் பண்ணுற சில விஷயம் எல்லாம் அப்படியே உங்க அப்பா பண்ணுற மாதிரியே பண்ணுறனு மணி சார் அடிக்கடி சொல்லுவார். எனக்கே ஆச்சரியமா இருக்கும். இப்போதான் அப்பாவோட ரொம்ப க்ளோஸா பழகுறேன். அட... அப்பாவை மாதிரிதானே பையனும் இருப்பான்.

பெரிய ஹீரோவோட பையனா சினிமாவில் நடிப்பது ப்ளஸ்ஸா மைனஸா?

கண்டிப்பா ப்ளஸ்தான். பார்க்கும்போதே ஹீரோவாதான் பார்ப்பாங்க. அதுக்கு ஏத்தமாதிரி நாமளும் கஷ்டப்பட்டு உழைச்சாலே போதும், சக்ஸஸ் நமக்குத்தான். அப்பா பெயரைக் கெடுக்காம இருந்தாலே போதும்.

வை ராஜா வை படத்தில் நடிக்கக் காரணம் ?

கதைதான் முக்கிய காரணம். ஐஸ்வர்யா அக்கா என்கிட்ட கதையை சொல்லும்போதே, 'கதை வித்தியாசமா இருக்கே. இந்தப் படத்தை ஆடியன்ஸ் ஏத்துப்பாங்களா'னு கேட்டேன். எனக்கே டவுட்டாதான் இருந்துச்சி. ஆனா, ஷூட்டிங் போக போக எனக்கே நம்பிக்கை வந்துருச்சி. நான் நினைச்ச மாதிரியே படமும் சூப்பரா வந்திருக்கு.

'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம் பார்ட் 2' நீங்க நடிப்பீங்களா?

'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம் பார்ட் 2'-க்கு நிறைய பேர் கதை செல்லுறாங்க. ஆனா 'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம்' படம்னாலே எங்க அப்பாதான். அதை மாத்திடக் கூடாது. ஆனா, கண்டிப்பா விக்ரம் பிரபுவும் நானும் ஒரு படம் நடிப்போம். அது 'அக்னி நட்சத்திரம்' இரண்டாம் பாகம்லாம் கிடையாது.

நீங்க நடிச்சதுல, நடிச்சிட்டு இருக்குறதுல உங்களுக்குப் பிடித்த கதாபாத்திரம் எது?

'கடல்' படத்துல நடிச்ச தாமஸ் கதாபாத்திரம்தான் என்னோட ஆல் டைம் ஃபேவரைட். தாமஸ்ஸோட நான் வாழ்ந்துட்டேன். அந்த கடல், நான் நடிச்ச சீன் எதையுமே என்னால மறக்க முடியாது.

நீங்க படம் முடிவு செய்வதில் அப்பாவின் தலையீடு இருக்குமா?

அப்பா கதையைக் கேப்பாரு. எனக்கு டவுட்னாலும் அப்பாகிட்டதான் கேப்பேன். ஆனா, அவரு என்னோட முடிவில் தலையிட்டது கிடையாது.

அப்பா நடிச்ச படங்களில் உங்களுக்குப் பிடித்தது?

'உள்ளத்தை அள்ளித்தா' படத்தை மட்டும் 200 முறையாவது பார்த்திருப்பேன். என்னை சிரிக்கவும், அழவும் வைச்சப் படம் அதுதான்.

உங்களைப் பற்றி நீங்களே ஒரு கிசுகிசு சொல்லுங்களேன்?

நைட் 4 மணிக்கு உங்க தூக்கத்தை கெடுக்க மாதிரி சத்தம் கேக்குதுனா, அதுக்குக் காரணம் நானாதான் இருப்பேன். எனக்கு பைக் ஓட்டுறதுனா அவ்வளவு பிடிக்கும். நைட்டுதான் அதிகமா வண்டி ஓட்டுவேன்.

'ஒரு ரைடு போகலாம் வாரீங்களா?' என்று சிரித்துக்கொண்டே பைக்கை ஸ்டார் செய்தார் கெளதம் கார்த்திக்.

Aishu and Yuvan are the real heroes:Gautham Karthik #VaiRajaVai


It is not easy to walk under the giant's shadow. Being son of veteran actor Karthik, Gautham's career has been scrutinised with a microscope, ever since he made his debut with Mani Ratnam's Kadal. This young man is outspoken and super charged up as we met him at the Vai Raja Vai press meet. Excerpts of a chat with the cool player…


A serious role in Kadal and then an energetic character in Yennamo Aedho. Now, what kind of role do you have in Vai Raja Vai?

Again, here too I’m playing a serious role but not too serious (Laughs). In Vai Raja Vai, my character is a very normal middle class guy from IT backdrop and I’d say the characterization is very realistic. Unlike my previous movies, here my body language has to be polished as the character is an IT professional.


How Vai Raja Vai offer came to you?

I think while writing the script itself Aishwarya had me in her mind and she wanted someone fresh for the script, luckily she saw Kadal and thus the offer came to me.

The trailer was fantabulous and you looked confident…

Thank you! All credits to Aishwarya, I exactly did what she told me. Hopefully, I’ve justified the character she had in mind…

About your director Aishwarya Dhanush…

Aishu is a brilliant director and I think, you can close your eyes and believe her. One rare quality I’ve seen on Aishu is that she takes control of the entire set and makes every possible effort to improve the quality of the film—I’d say it’s an absolute honor to work with such a promising director.

Also, I think from time to time she needs to laugh a little more so I end up cracking jokes to make her laugh, that’s my goal every day (laughs).

About the two pretty girls, Taapsee and Priya Anand…

I think Priya is an amazing actress and she has an eye for detailing in every frame where she is present. Behind the camera, Priya is a huge prankster and always makes everyone laugh and I think that’s a very positive quality of her.

In the film, we (Gautham and Priya) are established as couples so we don’t actually have any romantic track. The movie is all about how these couple separates and comes back, how everything happens around their characters.

Taapsee agreed to play a very different role in the film for which we are really grateful to her. Again, Taapsee is very dedicated and a thorough professional who mug up her lines well before the shoot and when the camera rolls, she exactly knows what has to be done…

Off late there are a few gossips about you… your take on them

Which one? I have a lot of gossips (mischievous smile)…

Tell us about everything…

I think link-ups with Priya are the funniest gossips I’ve ever read. It’s really funny because both of us are good friends, we used to have conversation like ‘Hey did you read the gossip?’ and have a good laugh.

During Kadal, they tried to link me with Thulasi as the film had a lip-lock but now it’s all gone. During Yennamo Aedho too they tried to establish some kind of gossip with Rakul Preet but for some reason they cut it off…Now I’m waiting for some gossips with Lakshmi Menon as we are acting together in Sippai…

What happened to Sippai? The trailer had some promising visuals…

It’s under production; once everything is ready we will be announcing the release date.

Any thoughtful advice from your dad Karthik …

He says be yourself, be natural and he has been telling this ever since Kadal. I’m just trying to follow his words…

Did he see Vai Raja Vai?

No actually he saw the trailer and told me that it is turning out to be a huge project and feels happy for me…

Your role model in the industry…

I think my dad is my role model. He got a unique style and I don’t think any other actor has got it, this is not coming from me as a son because I’m a huge fan of him as well. Also a lot of people tell me that I should be like my dad as he is super positive and a pleasant person to be with…

Apparently Dhanush played a cameo in Vai Raja Vai, how was the experience of working with him…

Actually he plays a character called Kokki Kumar in the film which is a character he played in Pudhupettai and I’m a huge of the film. Aishu too loves it and thus Dhanush came on board.

Dhanush has shot with us for five hours with us and he was very cool throughout. By the time he left, we all had that ‘Dhanush hangover’…

Did you watch the film?

Yes and I really loved it. The running time is just under 2 hrs which is a huge advantage and I’d say both Aishu and Yuvan Shankar Raja are the real heroes of the film, not me…

Gautham TOI Interview

His third film, Vai Raja Vai, directed by Aishwaryaa Dhanush, is all set to hit screens and Gautham Karthik sounds confident despite his previous two films not clicking at the box office. "I would like every movie of mine to become a hit. From the lowest technician to the biggest actor, we all put our heart and soul into every project and try to ensure that the film does well at the box office. But when a movie doesn't do well, it provides us an opportunity to analyze and learn from that experience," he says and adds, "Vai Raja Vai holds the same importance as every other movie I'm doing right now and those that I have done before."

He reveals that it was the concept of the film that attracted him most to the film. "It's something out of the box, which, Tamil cinema, nowadays, is reluctant to try," he says and elaborates, "It has everything we find in a commercial movie — action, romance, comedy and all of that — but apart from that, it also has many things that have not been shown in Tamil films for a while, like casino, gambling — all these are elements of the movie, delving into the human psychology... something to do with intuition."

Interestingly, Gautham's character in the film is named Karthik. So, was that decided after he was cast? "Actually, Aishwaryaa wanted everyone to have their own original names. Since I'd already used Gautham in another movie, I thought I'll go with my surname Karthik," he explains. Karthik is a middle-class boy working as an IT professional, and the situations he is put through and how he deals with them and how he comes out winning forms the gist of the story. The actor says that he has portrayed the character a little differently. "I've usually played very flamboyant characters; in my first movie, Kadal, I was a village guy who is extrovert, uncultured, very rough and raw, and in Yennamo Yetho, I was a chirpy youngster. But for this one, I had to be more polished, more city-based, and more controlled. So, the acting style is different," he says.

But there was not much of preparation that he had to do for the role. "I did have to learn how to play the game so that it didn't look fake. But apart from a 10-minute intro into the game, there was not much," he says. He says that shooting on a cruise was a lot of fun but they couldn't explore much due to time constraints. "We were shooting at different locations on the cruise all throughout, so there was no time to even breathe easy. But I think it is an experience everyone should have because a cruise is something amazing," he says.

The actor terms working with Aishwaryaa as fun. "A lot of people think Aishu is very serious but she is actually very fun-loving and enjoys a good laugh. I think I was the only one who made her laugh a little too much on the set," he laughs. That said, he adds that Aishwaryaa commanded the set completely. "She knows what she wants and if anything happens, it happens according to her will only. Aishu is a very dedicated director," he concludes.
