    Losers, All

With release after release tanking at the box office, what strategies are exhibitors employing to cope with this extended dry spell?

After abysmal box-office collections last year, the film industry forged into the New Year with an air of optimism, hoping that 2015 would bring better luck. However, almost two months into 2015 and cinema owners are already reeling under the pressure of films tanking at the box office. And this, despite some big-ticket Hindi releases hitting the marquee. Here’s more bad news – things might go further downhill, what with examinations about to begin and the cricket season tempting audiences away from cinemas.

In fact, barring a few odd films, there are no big films slated for release in the next few months, up until Piku, which features Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone, and will release only on April 30.

How will cinema owners sustain during these tough times, facing not only lack of content but also having to deal with fixed costs such as rentals, projection costs, salaries and so on? .......

    Kamal Gianchandani, President, PVR Pictures

Despite the fact that no Hindi film has done exceptional business at the box office, we as a chain haven’t been affected all that much. The movie business is a cyclical one and the last quarter is no different from any other year. Thanks to PK, which ran across several weeks and the business of the film spilt over to January, we didn’t face any decrease in footfalls. Our cinemas cater to the urban audience and they appreciated a film like Baby, which generated good business at our cinemas. Besides, we also released a lot of Hollywood films and had a special release of Oscar-nominated films which attracted a lot of people. Regional cinema too kept the shows alive. Yennai Arindhaal, which is Ajith’s Tamil film, and a few Bengali films have done well so our admits have not been affected at all.
