Pannaiyarum Padminiyum does not only include the original short film with the same name but also 2 other short films by S.U. Arunkumar & team (includes Justin Prakaran, Balasaravanan et al) :
1/ 5 Rupees (/watch?v=m55U5uq61xk)
2/ Soulmates (/watch?v=udFBjfHL6D8)
Great work by Writer-Director Arun in combining 3 short films into a motion picture that's not only quite engaging but awesome too.
Well supported by the entire cast :
Hero & Heroine
Gokul Benoy as Cinematographer
Justin Prabhakaran as Music Direcor
Supporting roles :
Padmini Car as self
Jayaprakash as Tech-Geek Pannaiyar
Thulasi as Motherly Chellamma
Vijay Sethupathi as Formula 1 "tractor" racer turned driver Murugesan
Balasaravanan as Well Wisher Peedai
Others :
Iyshwarya as "wonderful-apple-cheeked-rightly-named" Malarvizhi
Neelima Rani as Dream Daughter
Cameos :
Sneha, Dinesh, younger-version of Dinesh, a mechanic & Kali
The "kappu" (bracelet) suits VS just as fine as it fitted Rajini. He is the synonym of a real-life Driver Murugesan. Arun has pictorially portrayed the affection of each person towards Padmini in quite a simple but effective manner.
Pannaiyarum Padminiyum : a poet's dream

6 Reasons Why you should watch Pannaiyarum Padminiyum
1/ Vijay Sethupathi
The Man, the Movie & the Moment - Vijay Sethupathi (VS) is a contemporary actor who sails swiftly in his movies in whichever character or roles he plays by bringing in the the right momentum thru his performance, allowing the viewers to sail with him and enjoy each and every moment in the film. I would like to repeat that, his acting seems to be so easily done on screen, but its one of the most complex technique that he uses by exploring himself as the character he plays. There are several scenes where he sustains his emotions with his partner Pannaiyar, but unleashes them before Padmini and Malarvizhi. His expressions during the "death-house-song" sequence over-rides the sorrow in the situation and makes one reach for Malarvizhi. During the scenes where he gets insulted or heart-broken, he just plays them off delicately without exaggerating which puts the viewer quite near (& dear) to the situation. All "Drivers Murugesans" will look upon VS as their mirror image.
2/ All characters and artists are fantastic.
Not only the characters are charming but the artists in their roles are quite vibrant too. There are 6 main characters in the film which Arun uses to project the affection an individual can place on a Car. Firstly Pannaiyar, who transforms into a kid before his wonderful toy and becomes aimless that he is prepared to spend time only with it. His contrast is the village kid (Kid-Dinesh) who gets motivated in that young age and sets a goal for himself to collect Rs.5 and take a front-seat ride in the Car. Chellamma, who is the wife of Pannaiyar and Malarvizhi, the love interest of Murugesan, portray their love towards their partners in an unique way, where Chellamma acts as the motivation to Pannaiayar including the passion factor towards the Car and Malarvizhi acts as an assureance to Murugesan including the acceptance factor towards the Car. Murugesan and Peedai are opposites, even though both simply love the Car, one is full of positive energy whereas the other is just the opposite. Murugesan knows that he has got to exploit his skills to be close to the Car, but Peedai just allows himself to be with the Car. Finally its their collective energy that gets the Car rolling. Beautiful. You also have Sneha & Pannaiyar's Daughter playing the "Give & Take" roles.
Arun juggles with these characters firing up suituations that are beleivavle by tapping the right sense of emotions from the audience. The key is that he has brought up all the sentiments together mentioning that whatever the path maybe, Love is universal.
3/ 80's Village setup
Without a clue, the movie transports us to the past both visually as well bringing in the right feel factor of a period. It was handled in a quite straight forward fashion without spoon feeding us. The decor, the costumes, the village & the dwellers, the houses, the typical outskirts, the dry-muddy streets, the vessels, the food ..., last but not not least Padmini - they all serve as various aspects to make us watch and feel that period. The registration that it makes is quite effective, thanks to the man behind the camera.
4/ Romance
"Unakaga Pirantheiney" songs narrates the romance of 2 generations distinctly apart. Yet the same song proves that Romance cannot be calculated by time, but its eternal. The aging couple's assurance and care becomes the joy and sweetness for the younger couple. That's one side of the beauty, the other side being the triangular romance between Pannaiyar, Murugesan and Padmini. This is where Arun states that any love can sustain curiosity if its pureness is highlighted. Murugesan cheating Pannaiyar or Pannaiyar deflecting from his noble form are no less that how far you can go to be with your loved ones, curiously here its A CAR, which is unbelievably believable.
5/ Pannaiyarum Padminium is a comedy with Heart
The film is alive. It breathes through its characters and draws energy from its efficient narration. The scenes are fluid that they stick to you rightly aided by the music score which vibrates to the heart beat. Dialogues are simple, yet quite effective when the artists utter them with some immense emotion. Several scenes are funny, just the setup is enough to make one smile. The ravishing part is that even though you know whats going to happen when a scene begins, how it wonderfully unfolds before you, in a way more than you had wished for, that voluntarily puts a broad smile on your face. Its a comedy as the viewer is parceled with loads of smiles on his way back to the exit gate.

Watched the film this afternoon. Quite slow moving but entertaining nevertheless. Movie moves from humour to heart-wrenching and back in moments.
The hero of the film is pannaiyaar. His wife is an equal partner. Vijay is the third hero and Padmini the fourth.
It is amazing that they can spin a story from such a tiny string of a tale. Kudos to the director.
My partner didn't like it and said it was boring.
Never argue with a fool or he will drag you down to his level and beat you at it through sheer experience!
