Vicky's rendition - Oh Butterfly - Meera

But the final product is a giant. That is Maestro for you..

The arrangement of this song is quintessentially Illaiyaraaja.
For the line 'Poo Pookkum Raa Podhu' the conventional arrangement based on the melody note should have been D , C Gm
But Raaja reverses this and the original chords are D , Gm C7th.
and the same melody of the second line goes tangentially as F , Gm Eb
Transition to the relative major for the charanam is a drool moment..
From there the switch to the D Major (While the key signature is D Minor) is innovation as good as it comes..
Finishing line of the Charanam is:
Poovum = Dm C
Mullaai = C#dim Dm
Maari = Gm Dm
Pogum = Bb A
This is what I refer to as Chordensity.. A very high density of chords per unit time and still not making it sound cluttered..
You cannot get this sound anywhere else.

This scale is Simmendhra Madhyamam, The Prathi Madhyama coutnerpart of Keeravani who has the capability to overpower any force in this universe.
Many composers have tried controlling this raaga and have miserably failed until this man came along.
I'm yet to hear a better Simmendhra Madhyamam in Film music.
Thats because, a diamond can be cut only by another diamond.
An Ilaiyaraaja's Simmendhra Madhayamam can be only bettered by another Ilaiyaraaja's Simmendhra Madhyamam.
His 'Anandha Ragam Ketkum Kalam' in this ragam remains in my list top 3 compositions of Raaja.
But for today, I tried his superior carnatic composition 'Nee Pournami' from the movie Oruvar Vaalum Aalayam.

Hi Venkkiram
One of the earlier observations you made in this topic caught my attention. It is about the ability to handle rhythm patterns and taking time to create music with creative forms of rhythm arrangements. Your dismay that this may very well end with Raja is very well placed.
The fundamental driver for this is the fact that rhythm arrangement is something you can be creative, only if creating the main tune means no effort to a composer. Unfortunately, as most newer composers spend most of their energy in creating the main tune, they settle down with whatever is the easiest rhythm arrangement for their music. It is like water taking the easiest path.
Until you get another composer who has an infinite supply of melodies that he needs to focus on other aspects of orchestration, you are out of luck

The word composer Bhaskar Chandravarkar, who watched Ilayaraja in action in the studio and interviewed him, used to describe the way Ilayaraja worked was "facile". He does everything effortlessly, as if it is his second nature, and does it all by himself. It is saddening in a way to see that some people still think this is about one composer v/s the other and about one group of fans trying to talk up their favourite ( I can speak for myself that my list of favourite music artists would comfortably exceed, numerically, that of a good majority of participants in this thread....just to puncture the gross frog-in-the-well generalisation). I think one should be able to spot genius dancing in front of their eyes (slightly modified the more politically incorrect English idiom for this forum). What such discussions show is people still have no idea what they are going to lose when his time is over. It's ok now when he is active and still doing well but largely relegated to smaller, less commercially viable productions. Once the dreaded d-day comes and goes, we will perhaps then realise what a profound void he is going to leave in his wake. It is a very curious phenomenon which I have rarely encountered (and, without meaning to toot my own horn, I have followed a lot of Indian as well as Western artists). Artists are typically either popular and overrated (RD Burman) or obscure and underrated (Madan Mohan, Chitragupt, Jaidev). Ilayaraja was incredibly popular at one time and is still a very, very widely recognised name and yet the feeling persists that the full import of his work has not sunk in. Perhaps because he lamentably chose film music as his medium, one which purists tend to sneer at. Neither the purists do justice to his musical contributions while the audience, as is their wont, only sings the flavours of the season so Ilayaraja is not in vogue for them anymore.

Orchestration.

While G and Bm are given more prominence than they are due. That is Ilaiyaraaja.. Never following the crowd, but making his own way.
